So, I got a good chunk of hate mail for something I said earlier today in regards of my utmost disgust of Final Fantasy VII. I got the usual sort of stuff, from "You're an [idiot] and it was the greatest game of all time" to "You [person of homosexual nature], I will [really] kill you.".

My question is: why? Like all gamers in the world, we're subjective. Sure, I despise FFVII and a lot of popular games cause they don't meet my standards of a good game, but I shouldn't be out right ridiculed for my distastes.

Here's what I want to know, Escapists: what are your views on FFVII as well as your views on subjectiveness. I really feel sorta put off by this whole thing, but I won't name any names because their entitled to their own opinion.

It was good, but it may have been a little overrated. I personally preferred FF9 as my favorite. That's not to say I don't think highly of it. It was my first Final Fantasy, and the amount of time I spent on seven through nine takes up the vast majority of my attention in the FF series. Seven probably holds such a special place for being many people's introduction into the JRPG and FF.

I like it, but that's my opinion. It's one of the best just because I enjoy the combat system and the story line. Maybe you don't like the way the combat works and would prefer turn based, ect. I never really start a fight with someone for not liking a game that I do, I just don't listen to their reviews. At the end of the day it's all about what you like and don't like.

Final Fantasy Seven was my favorite of the series. If you don't like it, thats fine. Voicing an opinion counter to many others' opinions on a game that is known for its rabid fanbase is like going into the a predominantly African neighborhood and calling them all the N-word (god I hate saying it that way... its so much easier to just say the damned word). You're just calling for the abuse.

They weren't right in saying such things, but you knew the consequences and were just asking for the flame. Your own damn fault.

I think the Final Fantasy franchise on a whole is overrated, so I didnt care for FF7 when it came out, after my friend told me how awesome if game it was, and so on and so forth. I also think anyone who flames me for my opinion is a fucking mindless fanboy, but that another matter.

game play I found aright however the story..not soo much, the story is far too hippie-ish for me and not to mention how I could subjectively class AVALANCHE more "evil" than Shnira

FF bash boys are the worst out of any bashing community imo.

I disagree.

Everybody is entitled to their own opinions, but I don't grab a pitchfork and torch when somebody rips on Scratches or Grim Fandango. I respect people's opinions. Do not get me wrong, I grew up with Final Fantasy and I loved everything before VII. Hell, I still play IV and VI to this very day and I really like IX and XI (also looking forward to XIV).

It's just that I was expecting a little more maturity, which is asking a lot since I'm on the internet, but this is the Escapist, a place I've been apart of for more than two years and never really had a problem expressing my views until now. Come on, I make constant death threats to Gabe Newell, but no one has ever said anything.

While this may not be a direct answer to your question I will still respond thus: many gamers, despite their constant mocking of religion and people in religion, are really no better, and often are worse, than the very fanatical religious zealots they so like to mock. Many gamers are insular, bitter, irrationally cynical people. They consider only their viewpoint to be absolute truth and that anyone who feels differently must, by necessity, be an idiot. They really cannot cope with the idea that reality actually allows people to have different tastes and opinions on things, because they are insecure regarding their own opinions and choices. They're rude, crude, spiteful, arrogant, self-centered, self-absorbed, egotistical, immature, whiny, and have an overblown sense of entitlement. Only thing I can say is to just not pay such people any mind and don't let them upset you.

While FFVII was great in its time, despite some of the major plot holes and other issues, it's old now, and we all really just need to move on. And before people flame me, I've played the game 7 times and loved every moment; so, I'm not saying this as some snide, cynical nutter who's never played the game. We've all changed since then and have different tastes and expectations of games. Also, the mix of personalities of gameres today are not the same as back then. There will certainly be a niche of gamers that will buy the game unconditionally, if were remade, but I really would not expect the game to have the same level of relative success it enjoyed back in the days of the PS1. Of course, I could be wrong.

You've been here for two years and haven't seen the constant influx of new users? I mean, hell, March Madness isn't something that goes unnoticed around here. Not everyone is like you and I in the idea that maturity comes with your turn to speak. Most people don't even consider that idea.

Final Fantasy Seven is the best game I have ever played out of any genre but you not liking it does not make me want to kill you like that other guy does. Makes me shake my head in amazement that someone did not like it but not send you hate mail. I don't know. The game was simplistic but in a good way. It didn't get bogged down with all the extra crap that FF tries to tack onto the new games.

Aw geez. As much as I loved the game, I hate fanboys like that. I also don't mind if someone said it really wasn't their thing. I just know what I like.

It had KICK ASS music around every corner, and i liked all the characters. I didn't really see any serious flaws in it besides shitty graphics. But opinion is opinion.

The game is, honesly, terribly overrated. Its as bad as Halo in that respect.
The thing is, that has nothing to do with either of those games; the fanbase just became absolutely rabid, and refuses to acknowledge the difference between their personal affection towards them and their actual quality.
They're both genuinely great games for their time, though. While it is a full-blooded JRPG, and thus doesn't appeal to a lot of people, its great at what it does, providing a long, in-depth gameplay experience with (By JRPG standards) a cast featuring a lot of decent characters and a complex, albeit love-it-or-hate-it story.

Personally, almost everything about it rubs me the wrong way, but that's OK. That is really OK, even though it is my only game that I've ever seriously considered snapping in two.
Though I have to admit, it is pretty spot-on with the whole, "Final Fantasy" thing. No one seems to remember that the series' title is all about the antagonist perusing a mad dream for a world born anew in their image. JENOVA and Sephiropth are really great antagonists, (though Shinra admittedly helps) and they really feel similar to the omnipotent, viral threat that Garland/Chaos posed in the original game. Honestly, that's the single factor about FF7's story that I truely love.

Still, next to Garland, Ultemecia's my favorite Final Fantasy antagonist. She's not necessarily as flashy or as blatantly menacing as Sephiropth, but she's such a wonderful character when you take the time and get on the verge of over-analyzing her. And she has some really epic dialogue that the localization people tarnished. :(
But yeah, I do like my antagonists a bit on the boring-but-detailed side.

I like FF7 a lot, but i feel like you are just as entitled to your opinion as those douche bags harassing you
