I liked Final Fantasy VII. I thought the story was interesting (Cloud's story was particularly compelling, and somewhat relatable for me), I enjoyed the battle system, and I've always liked the air of mysticism that surrounds the game and its glitches, myths and legends. It isn't for everyone, though, and I can certainly understand why it's not well liked in certain circles.
As for the fans who act with less tolerance, I can only offer this; Final Fantasy fans, in their most rabid, obsessed form, tend to be defensive to the point of insanity of their beloved game of choice. I can't offer a reason why this might be, but I find it intensely disturbing.
