So, I got a good chunk of hate mail for something I said earlier today in regards of my utmost disgust of Final Fantasy VII. I got the usual sort of stuff, from "You're an [idiot] and it was the greatest game of all time" to "You [person of homosexual nature], I will [really] kill you.".
Fanboys will be fanboys, and 7 and 8 fanboys are particularly bad and are as bad as each other (in my experience) personally i like 7 i had a lot of fun with it, but i don't think its the absolute godsend of gaming. its good but not as good as others.

I liked Final Fantasy VII. I thought the story was interesting (Cloud's story was particularly compelling, and somewhat relatable for me), I enjoyed the battle system, and I've always liked the air of mysticism that surrounds the game and its glitches, myths and legends. It isn't for everyone, though, and I can certainly understand why it's not well liked in certain circles.

As for the fans who act with less tolerance, I can only offer this; Final Fantasy fans, in their most rabid, obsessed form, tend to be defensive to the point of insanity of their beloved game of choice. I can't offer a reason why this might be, but I find it intensely disturbing.

I love Final Fantasy VII, its one of my favourite games. But I bought the game back when it first came out, and back then the graphics looked great (with the pre-rendered backgrounds and what-not). The story was fantastic, and the whole game was just really emotive and sucked you straight in. The soundtrack was superb too! However, I can see the game having a lot less appeal now due to the fact that the graphics and gameplay are really outdated. I think a lot of the appeal that the game still has for me today is nostalgia more than anything else as the experience I had playing it at the time was really intense for a video game and I had never connected emotionally with characters in a video game before I played that one.

I love the music in FF7, and Sephiroth is an awesome villian, but other than that i hated the game. I just found the whole thing really depressing, the first few hours of the game are walking through linear dystopic corridors and it doesn't get much better when you get to the world map either.

Its in my opinion a brilliant game but its not the best of the series i think, i do understand though that as long people don't go overboard on hate over games i like and have rediculous reasons for not liking them then i'm fine. Everyone has an opinion and likes different things.

Final Fantasy VII is the only Final Fantasy that I've played that I really enjoyed. It has all the problems that ruin the other ones for me ? ridiculous grind and boring combat ? but it more than makes up for them with a truly charming setting, story, and cast.

As for subjectivity, I think that getting that outraged and hostile over a video game is pretty stupid, but it's not as stupid as getting offended by it. It's a god damned Internet gaming discussion, what did you expect? It's not like it attracts the most mature of audiences.
