I've just bought it for the PS3 and I'm wondering which two people to use alongside Cloud, I really have no idea about this game so any advice would be appreciated.

Tifa gets really good once she starts to level up. Your best bet is to grind with her, at least until you get to the second tier of limit breaks.

Aerith's healing techniques essentially make her an excellent medic. I can't count the number of times her limit breaks have saved my ass.

But that's just who I went with at the start.

RED XIII isn't a bad choice either, now that I think about it. But once you get Cid, group up with Tifa and you'll dominate.

Your best bet is to experiment, seeing as how materia is a really flexible system.

Is there any benefit to have a long range character then?

The materia system essentially makes all the characters the same stat wish. Just go with who you like. I usually like Barrett and Red, then swap one out when I get Vincent.

Barrett's long range weapon comes in handy in a few battles, but it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. Although not all his weapons are long-range

Tifa - Cause once you get her to a certain health she just attacks over and over and over again with the same amount as her health and it whoops any bosses ass.
Barret - He has a gun for a FREAKIN' arm...need I say more!

Yes, some boss's can't be hit by short range attacks, but these are few and far between. I think the first one is a couple of hours in.

There's a fight in an elevator versus a remote helicopter as you're exiting the Shinra base. You can't melee it, so your only option is ranged attacks. That's really the only time I've used Barret.

Aerith = Heal/Throw.
Red XIII = Fire-based spells.
Barret = Long ranged fire.

Meanwhile, Cloud is on the roof fighting a black panther and being a badass.

Most have a distinct ability that is useful. The only ones to stay away from would be Cait Sith and possibly Yuffie. I'd say the best choices would be Cid and Tifa. They're extremely powerful. Although first time I played through the entire game, I just went with whatever characters were my favorites, i.e. Vincent and Red XIII. (although now I like every character equally)

Tifa gets really strong, and you REALLY need someone that has a long ranged weapon.

I used to alternate with the people in my party though - with materia people can have quite similar attributes.

You can put Barret on the back row and he does as much damage 'cause of his long range weapon... despite the fact the game puts him on the front row :)

Yeah, you'll end up with them all pretty much the same as the game goes on. Materia matters a lot more. Tifa's a good choice 'cause she's mandatory for a few scenes and I think has the highest magic. Barret or Red XII were the ones I used just 'cause of their survival capacity :)

I know a whole lot of people hate her, but I like to have Yuffe in my party. She has a healing limit break for those tight situations, and unlike Aeris, who is purely healing/support, she has decent attack breaks.
Yuffie's pretty good as well - but getting her is a chore.

Especially if you don't know how.

The game has a row system, if I remember correctly. Front row deals regular damage, and takes regular damage. Back row takes reduced (half? I forget) damage, and deals half damage. HOWEVER! :) If your character has a ranged weapon, ie Barretts arm cannon, that character deals regular damage, and takes reduced damage (except magic is normal damage).

So in the first portion of the game, I'd always tuck Aeris and Barrett in the back, leave Cloud in front. Barrett turning into something of a Tank back there! I'd gave Barrett the bodyguard matteria, and he'd jump out and save someones butt, for reduced damage!

Yuffie and Vincent (optional characters) are both ranged combatants too. So remember to tuck them into the back for that extra edge. :)

As for who's the best? Depends on who you like the best. I always had my two favorite characters in my party whenever possible; Tifa and Aeris. Just because I like to think Cloud as the mack daddy! ;)

I like to use Red XIII with all of his materia slots full of magic and Aerith for heals. Though I plan to start using Tifa soon instead of Red.

long term...vincent becomes a glitched super god with his certain super weapon

but for now, tifa and barret or barret and aerith

aerith is good for healing and what not, and barret in the backrow is a beast

Not really they do full damage from the bak row and can hit certain creatures but thats it. You can a materia that does the same effect it is called Long Range I think so no points for originality.

Cid and Barret.

Get their level 4 limit breaks and that's it.

Every enemy dies!

Already loving the graphics and music though.
