I'd argue that Cloud had more depth but Tidus was more likeable... so they're kind of on par with each other.

Damn. I was all set to fan wank in you're face, but you're points are valid. There isn't a single con I can disagree with. I would say, however, that the whole dad/son thing I like and I really liked the story, even though the ending was a kick in the balls.
It was original, apart from anything else, although perhaps the religious dogma was a little too close to home for those who live in a catholic society (oh snap).

Does anyone remember the days when two games with different mechanics, different characters, different styles of the same genre were typically named differently?

Kinda like Dungeon master and Eye of the Beholder. Two first-person dungeon crawlers with EXP systems and RPG elements that arguably have more in common than Final Fantasy 9 and Final Fantasy 10 do.

Honestly, I wish they'd drop the whole Final Fantasy name and start calling the games something else. The only similarity between the games is the background and given how little I care about the background of Final Fantasy games past 8 or so, it's kinda odd.

Think of it like this... if Half-life three came out but had the following changes:

You are not Gordan Freeman, you are Christos Vladmir.
City 17, Black Mesa and the Citadel are not in any part of the game even in passing.
You get the standard array of weapons, but instead of actually pointing and clicking, when you get in range of an enemy, the screen will turn to them, zoom and shoot for you.
There are headcrabs, vortigaunts.

We'd all think that vALVE have completely gone insane and demand a proper Half-life 3.

But we let Square(enix) get away with this... why?

There hasn't really been a downturn in the series. If you had to make one, I'd say 12 just because 12 was god awful and 13 wasn't that good.

Besides, 9 was the best. Everyone knows this.

I have to disagree with you greatly for the "Tidus is the worst main character in Final Fantasy history."

Tidus is one of the first characters that more accurately represents what a person would do in his situation.

Tidus is a popular teenager in a world of luxury(Like people from north america) who has spent his life never having to put his life on the line.

Suddenly he is dropped in a world where not dying is a fucking luxury. Where everyday is a fight to survive for most of the people of spira. Where monsters run rampant and a giant aeon of death and destruction mindlessly attacks spira.

To top it off, that monster is his dad, your surrounded by people who don't actually like you, but rather who you remind them off (Wakkas brother, Jecht) and until half way through the game don't really care for you at all.

Oh yeah, your also not real.

Tidus, unlike so many other of Squares characters thus far, reacts like a real person. Scared, confused, angry. He doesn't instantly pound his chest and run off to save the world in a blood fueled rage.

He acts like a living person with a past. With an identity. He has a consistent and believable personality.

Hell, if i was in his shoes i probably would have gotten shot five minutes on the boat if not drowned or killed. Christ actually i probably would have been killed on that bridge.

Tidus for me is one of the best characters for me simply because he isn't another slap your chest and run towards your enemy screaming for blood, tobacco chewing, Jerky eating lumberjack.

Tidus for me is a very interesting character, and i wouldn't want him to change in anyway.

Though yeah, the actual way they were drawn was stupid beyond repair. However go back and look up the character art for the older characters, silly costumes are kinda a staple of FF.

I liked blitzbll though, It was a fun little diversion from the main game. The linearity was a different way of doing there game. They tried something different and new in respect to the series. Also i forgive the voice acting simply because that was the first game i ever played fully voice acted. It was really well done to me. People always complain about the laugh scene but that's the point. Its SUPPOSED to make you cringe.

It has flaws, the storyline makes sense to me but you have to pay attention ALL the way to the end otherwise it doesn;t make a lot of sense, but I like that. I really wish that Seymor would put a fucking shirt on, and half of them are dressed like clowns anyways.

However the downfall of the series? No. It's just a different idea. I wouldn't accuse ANY of them to be the downfall of the series. With the exception of 8 and 12 i have enjoyed each of them.

I really wish they would get over this obsession with FFVII they seem to have. My main problem with that is how i refuse to mention i am a fan of FF in public anymore because every time someone says the words "OMG have you Played SEVEN! Isn't it the best ever!!!!!" and i have to try and explain "it was okay, but six, five, four, ten and nine are about six thousand times more fun and i don't want to hear you talk about it for three hours"

Then they make this horrible whining noise that makes me glasses crack. This isn't FFVII's fault by the way, but god it's fans annoy me.

That was actually a pretty interesting read. I quite enjoyed Final Fantasy X for various reasons, but the reasons in the OP are sound and pretty well argued. I will admit Tidus was an unlikeable character, but for the most part, I guess I don't share the opinions present in the OP entirely. I didn't mind the lack of exploration, for a start, and the dialogue was poor but not awful, with possibly one, maybe two exceptions. As for the character designs, OK, they were pretty silly, even for a JRPG.

However, the thing is, I didn't mind these things because for me, Final Fantasy X was fun. It wasn't the most fun I've ever had with a Final Fantasy game - VI still takes that honour - but I still enjoyed myself when playing it through, so I can't say I hate it, and nor can I call it the beginning of the series' downfall, seeing as I don't particularly think the series has gone downhill overmuch, although that's just me.

Blitzball was still utterly horrid though. What an awful excuse of a minigame, and I especially resented the game for forcing me to play it, even once. It was disappointing, to say the least, especially after some stellar minigames in previous entries in the series.

It doesn't matter how many times you add zero to itself, it's still going to equal zero, John. ;)

I liked X. I honestly don't get why Tidus gets so much hate. He's whiny, annoying and unlikeable in the beginning because he's an emotionally immature teenager being thrown into a situation he isn't at all ready for. He grows from the experience, and by the end of the game, he's almost completely different. It's character development, folks.

XI, XII and XIII all blew, though. X was the end of FF for me.

Well as far as the the writing for FFX goes, the story does sound a bit absurd when you explain it like that. However, I must remind you that it is in fact a fantasy game, fantasy being something that doesn't necessarily have to be logical. Also as you play the game, it does in fact, make you feel like you are new to this world, which I believe was the overall goal and was one of the reasons I liked the game.

As far as the dialogue goes, you really can't compare it to any of the previous Final Fantasies as they didn't have the constraints of having to lip sync the dialogue. And trust me the voice acting could have been worse, trust me. I've heard voice acting that would make your ears bleed.

its not the worst game ever as a matte rof fact the gameplay is incredible, but the story is crap
i hate yuna and titus. they are some of the worst characters ive ever seen in a game
most jrpgs are linear todya so i wont put that into this but everything else he said was basically true
oh and blitzball can go die now
EDIT: and i hate rikku too but not as much as yuna
and FFX didnt ruin square otherwise TWEWY wouldnt be freakin sweet

I never did get the hate on Squall, personally I found his personality change during the game nice, Tidus from what I remember remained rash and clueless during the entire game.

Not that I didn't like Tidus.

I actually have to agree with this; I thought Tidus was fantastic and, while whiny, felt perfectly realistic given the circumstances (I didn't even mind the balcony scene where Tidus and Yuna did their fake laughing).

I thought the gameplay was easily the best in the series, and the storyline was, by far, the most interesting and engaging. Sure, it was a little hokey at times (Wakka's accent still makes me giggle a bit), but...well, I don't know how to say it other than that everything felt right. The drama was realistic, the overarching storyline, while fantastical, was great. The voice acting was fantastic most of the way through, so far as I can remember, and the writing rarely faltered.

So...yeah, I have to disagree with you, OP. FFX was my favorite Final Fantasy game by a mile.

You are free to think anyway you want, but I think FFXII was the weak link, but the franchise still holds promise with FFvsXIII

Okay, if it went downhill after X, why did I get so much enjoyment out of XIII and find VII got quite dull?
I'm starting to wish they named all the games differently, then people would stop assuming they're going to be more of what they've already played.

I'm only going to pick on one of your points though. That's the character design.

Yeah, that really became a problem in X.

FF9 will always be my personal favorite throughout the whole series, it was the only one that truly interested me, yet I have not played it. It's mostly a "watch others play" game for me.

By the way, I'm getting some serious dejavu here. I swear this topic existed before.
