Ifrit isn't supposed to join you, the test is to just kick his ass. And not kill him. So yes you basically just ruined the test for everyone.

Irine wanted to be cool and professional, to impress the ladies. So he didn't say anything, He didn't think he had to either. I hate Irvine.

Norg had the money to start the garden, but he wanted to be in control as well, Cid agreed because it's what Edea wanted.

This is Final Fantasy, you bring people back from the dead -all the time- There's also magic.

:p I'm not trying to sound elitist, I promise. Other than squall being dead, those are the real reasons x.x

And I'd love to hear more  I liked FF8s story a lot. Maybe we really can find a few holes :p or clear some stuff up. Though maybe take it to PMs?
Thinking back on FFVIII, there were so many potentially awesome concepts that fell short. Take the GF's for example. The concept behind them are so abstract, that they could have been a much bigger part of the game, but it absolutely failed at that. They were just used as one of the most plot-convenient devices for the story: it makes people forget stuff. From there, it was never mentioned again and had no other affect on the story. It made Selphie make everyone keep a promise to write their memories down into a diary, and mentioned she found a GF in a rock or something, and that could have made some great scenes and character development and revealed some mysterious new GF that could have possibly influenced the way Selphie acts. But no, it's NEVER mentioned again.

There was so much potential in integrating the GF's into the story. Quetzalcoatl, Shiva, and Ifrit could have been the main GF's that talked or guided the characters in the story and maybe drove a dilemma: get more powerful, or forget who you are. They could have also been there for the sake of throwing in some epicly awesome cut-scenes. The battle between the two gardens would have been more awesome if there were giant beasts ripping holes into the wall and setting everything ablaze.

But nope, that all falls short to you just taking an exam by beating the crap out of a fiery monster, and it's never mentioned again.

There are other devices that could have redeemed the game's plot convenience and ham-handed 'drama'. The "Rinoa is Ultimecia" talk (which was started due to poor translation, not the way the plot is set up) could have been awesome. "Squall is dead" as well.

Also, magic could have been... ah **** it I could talk all night about all the could-have's and should-have's.

FFVIII had so much potential, but it fell absolutely short.

A.K.A. it sucks.

How you like 13 and not 10 is way beyond me. 10 is tied for my favorite, along with 7. IMO, 13 sucks hard.

OT, I haven't played either, but I was excited for XIV until I heard that every reviewer took a giant smelly poo on it. I might still play it just because I like to think I'm intelligent enough to not bandwagon on what cynics have to say, but sometimes even a vast majority can be right.

First off. I hate the hate on the new FF games. 1,2,10,13 are the best. People gotta relize 8 is terrible.

I'd say get the trail of FFXIV. it gets a ton of hate but i love it but its for a very niche type of MMO gamer. So try the trail.
You didnt like FF3?

OT: Well, I dont like any MMO FF games. its a late release in a america (where i'm from, not sure about you), so you lose a huge part of the community so a huge part of the fun.

What was both good and bad about FFXI was that it forced you from an early level to play in parties because enemy levels in comparison to yours would always scale higher in strength. So what would be less than a minute to kill an Easy prey while soloing at level 20 could take up to 2 minutes at level 75 (depending on your time) and it would use up more health and mana to kill it. not to mention it would be ridiculous to spend a minute at level 75 to solo something for 50exp when you needed 10,000exp for each merit. (Lvl 75 RDM, 69 WAR). Also with the 18+hour boss fight, it was probably a combination of a ridiculously tough boss and a flawed strategy. Some of the bosses from FFXI were designed to have an unofficial time limit where after a certain point they would start to become ridiculously powerful to force people to kill it as quickly as possible.

I have heard that they reduced the importance of combat in FFXIV to make it more "family-friendly" or whatever. Now I haven't played FFXIV yet because I can't afford the monthly payments at the moment and but if Square Enix handles it like they did during the North American launch of FFXI,then it will be buggy for about the first 6 months.

Personally I liked 4,6,7,8,10, and 13. Each had there own unique focal points that made them great games. I really didn't like 9, not because of the story but because of the cartoonish characters, I dunno just didn't do it for be. And 12 was just bleh altogether. I wouldn't get the MMOs though as far as I have seen they have never been very good.

I don't play MMOs at all, but I heard XIV was just bad. It lacked many features that it should've had at launch and it seems like Square Enix rushed a game again just so they could get some easy sales. Take the Valve and Polyphony way of developing games and take your time to ensure a good experience for your audience. You're one of the largest Third Party Developers ever SE, you shouldn't have any excuses.

Wow, you say 13 is good and 8 is bad, just wow.
Jesus Christ, it's called an opinion.

I'm not an FF 8 fanboy, I hate that game to. But I'd say 10 is just as bad, if not worse, when it comes to the plot.
Meh, it depends. Auron has a much better connection to Jecht than Tidus, who has little more than daddy problems because Jecht was so pissed his manly loins produced such a whiny loser and tried to make him manlier.
You know it the idea of his belief being a opinion is kinda lost when he says "People gotta release 8 is terrible" that is saying I feel 8 is bad so everyone must think it.

Yep want me to list the MILLIONS of plot problems with it? I also think 6 is bleh to. after 5 i thought it went downhill. 7 was good though. not until 12/13 did i fall back in love with the series.
Yes please, name them. I want a comprehensive list of over 2 million bullet points. That's awfully nice of you to offer :) I've always been curious.
Alright man you got me there. I like 8 i think its okay. Am not gonna lie i love everygame. I just hate the elitest attitude. Some of the annoying thngs that bugged me of the top of my head though. Spoilers!!!

why is the seed exam fighting some crazy monster in the fire cave? like is this standard for all seeds? Do they get multiple of this monster how do they maintain them?

When your planning to take out the sorceress why does irving take on the job? Hes the only one who remembers there past he knows he was raised by her. Why doesn't he mention he cant do it cause hes conflicted? Why dosent he tell the entire party? what the hell!

How could Headmaster cid ever trust norg? The dudes crazy how could anyone trust him? The dude is always yelling in all caps and just looks like a more obvious of a villain they Seymour from FF10.

How could squal ever survive the attack from the sorceress? It was like 3 giant ice needles right in his chest then falling how many several feet? unless your following the theory "Sqaul is dead (Google it its very intresting its actually a great way to explain the game) then he would have died.

I have more i could think of so just ask if you want more. Every FF game has flaws i just see 8 having the most plot flaws. The gameplay system was great. I just found FF13 to be My favorite of the series.

Thanks for listening am actually really trying to be civil and discussive here.
I get what your saying about plot holes (and yes it does have big ones) but what FF game doesn't have them (or any game for that matter, I mean look at the NIS games hahaha).

Why is it Aries in FF7 can die from a sword in the back but you can survive super nova?

Why is it summons that have those animations that show them blowing up the world not blow up the world?

Why is it Galiuf can survive all those beatings when he and Exdeath fought but then just die.

Why is it in FF4 Cid jumps out of the airship with a bomb strapped to his chest blow up and live

Why is it in FF4 Yang dies from a exploding console but comes back.

Why is moving the statues in 6 cause the worlds magic to go of balance, would earthquakes or seismic events cause the statues to move if a madman could do it.

Between the two... It's actually a tougher choice for a new player than it would be for someone who had already made it through FFXI back in its "glory days".

The fact of the matter is that if you start XI, and you don't either have friends who play, or rapidly make friends in game... you're not going to get anywhere. Pretty much everyone who still plays is safely esconced in some level of endgame, and while the Level Sync system does let them help you out with leveling up, it can be very difficult to make progress at lower levels, particularly if you lack the resources to do things on your own. Soloing really isn't a viable option for most jobs, not if you're looking to make a reasonable degree of progress each session.

FFXIV, for all its problems, has a much less developed player base, so starting out would be significantly easier in that regard. The problems are varied, however. To begin with, the game is rather demanding when it comes to specs; if your machine isn't fairly current, you're going to have trouble running it. The biggest problem is that that the game simply isn't finished yet, and probably won't include some features that most MMO fans would consider basic functionality for some months yet.

So.

Give XI a try, see if you like it, see if you can make progress in the game. If not, give XIV a try. Stylistically they're very similar, though the play style and fundamentals are very different between each game. I probably wouldn't bother with XIV until the PS3 release in March. I figure that by then it might be done, and I'll reactivate my account to see how things are looking...

I agree with this man.

8 might have had some fun mechanics (FUCK DRAW POINTS) but it's plot was everywhere and a mess. This is coming from a guy who fully realizes every concept and point of FF7.

@OP: XI without question. XIV pisses me off...so much...
