Thinking back on FFVIII, there were so many potentially awesome concepts that fell short. Take the GF's for example. The concept behind them are so abstract, that they could have been a much bigger part of the game, but it absolutely failed at that. They were just used as one of the most plot-convenient devices for the story: it makes people forget stuff. From there, it was never mentioned again and had no other affect on the story. It made Selphie make everyone keep a promise to write their memories down into a diary, and mentioned she found a GF in a rock or something, and that could have made some great scenes and character development and revealed some mysterious new GF that could have possibly influenced the way Selphie acts. But no, it's NEVER mentioned again.oplinger said:Ifrit isn't supposed to join you, the test is to just kick his ass. And not kill him. So yes you basically just ruined the test for everyone.
Irine wanted to be cool and professional, to impress the ladies. So he didn't say anything, He didn't think he had to either. I hate Irvine.
Norg had the money to start the garden, but he wanted to be in control as well, Cid agreed because it's what Edea wanted.
This is Final Fantasy, you bring people back from the dead -all the time- There's also magic.
I'm not trying to sound elitist, I promise. Other than squall being dead, those are the real reasons x.x
And I'd love to hear moreI liked FF8s story a lot. Maybe we really can find a few holes
or clear some stuff up. Though maybe take it to PMs?
There was so much potential in integrating the GF's into the story. Quetzalcoatl, Shiva, and Ifrit could have been the main GF's that talked or guided the characters in the story and maybe drove a dilemma: get more powerful, or forget who you are. They could have also been there for the sake of throwing in some epicly awesome cut-scenes. The battle between the two gardens would have been more awesome if there were giant beasts ripping holes into the wall and setting everything ablaze.
But nope, that all falls short to you just taking an exam by beating the crap out of a fiery monster, and it's never mentioned again.
There are other devices that could have redeemed the game's plot convenience and ham-handed 'drama'. The "Rinoa is Ultimecia" talk (which was started due to poor translation, not the way the plot is set up) could have been awesome. "Squall is dead" as well.
Also, magic could have been... ah **** it I could talk all night about all the could-have's and should-have's.
FFVIII had so much potential, but it fell absolutely short.
A.K.A. it sucks.
