So, a few people who dug into it found a few days ago that the Japanese internet portal for Final Fantasy XIII displayed a Steam logo at the bottom of the web page.

Lo and behold, also in the wake of a recent PC release for Final Fantasy IV, here it is [http://store.steampowered.com/app/292120/].

I... am not really sure what to make of this.

On the one hand, as many people may recall, Final Fantasy XIII is one of the only games in existence I have ever felt strongly enough about to state that I actually "hate" it. On the other hand, despite feeling the same way every single time I've tried to play it to the point where I traded back in my PS3 copy of the game, I've always had the nagging feeling of wanting to finish it. Because it's Final Fantasy. Dammit, Square.

So what do people think of this incredibly strange turn of events? Is it nice that PC is getting a little more attention from the Japanese RPG side of the industry for once, even if it is for Final Fantasy XIII? Does it not matter, because it's Final Fantasy XIII? Is anyone else questioning their morals and thinking they might try it again because we all have a history of masochism? Is $16 as weird of a price point as I think it is?

EDIT: Update: Thanks to NuclearKangaroo, PC Gamer reports [http://www.pcgamer.com/2014/09/18/final-fantasy-xiii-confirmed-for-pc-releasing-next-month/] that apparently the entire XIII trilogy will eventually be coming to PC.

Everything about this is bizarre. Like, I didn't know this was happening until today, bizarre. You would think that Square-enix would have maybe done some marketing for this thing before releasing it, considering how much damn money they put into it and the sequels? And why PC? What made them decide this was the market for one of the most hated games in one of their biggest franchises? I just don't understand anything. It is like a weird april fool's joke, but I don't get how it is supposed to be funny, and it is september. :\

Still not X or X-2. Or IX, actually.
I'd really like those 3, Square. Pretty please.

But still, it's nice that they're adding the FF library to PC, even if they are doing it in a really bizarre order. 7, 8, 3, 4 then 13? Makes no sense really but hey, who am I to question whatever Square is doing.

Does this mean we'll also see XIII-2 and XIII-3 as well?

It's not released until Oct 9th. It is up for pre-order now though.

Well, it's not actually released yet until next month, but yeah, there hasn't been any fanfare from what I've seen so far, which kinda goes against everything Square Enix stands for.

I'd love to see IX on PC. Even though I still own the Playstation version. And bought the PSN version.

You torment me on purpose, Sass, don't you? (Though I'm curious about that as well, actually.)

Reception is kinda split down the middle, to be honest. A lot of people don't have many issues with Final Fantasy XIII because it was the first FF game they played. And some people just had different expectations out of Final Fantasy than, say, I did, and so they weren't disappointed by XIII when they picked it up. And then, of course, it has a pretty dedicated section of people on the internet who just really, really don't like it at all.

I will always maintain my stance that I don't really think it's that bad of a game in itself, but I think it's a pretty terrible Final Fantasy game.

Well it's nice that Squeenix are re-releasing the Final Fantasies for the PC crowd. Better late than never, right? And it's great that more people will have the opportunity to play these games. Well...aside from XIII. It's not exactly unexpected considering how much they tried to push that trio of games, but now I'm going to feel bad for the new players who stumble into that mess. Neverless, I'd peg this as a win, despite FFXIII being involved, and hopefully it's a sign for things to come. Seems more possible that they'll port other Final Fantasy titles now that III, IV, VII and XIII are out there.

PCGamer says yes

if anything ill say the price is very attractive, which is weird since it costs just as much as FF4 but has far better graphics and is more recent i think, in fact with the pre-order discount FF13 is cheaper

I sure hope this means final fantasy XV will come to PC as well
really that's the only interesting-looking final fantasy out there for me
(heard XIV was sweet, but you know, fuck subscriptions)

Thanks for that link. My mind has been completely blown by this.

But yeah, I don't think the price is actually that bad. It's weird, but low enough that I think people would be justified in being interested. Against my better judgement, I'm interested, and I can't even articulate why.

EDIT: One thing I would say is that it would probably be prudent to be a little wary of it from a PC port perspective, though. Square Enix actually has a pretty good recent history with PC titles with the likes of Tomb Raider, Sleeping Dogs, and Deus Ex: Human Revolution, alongside the varied reception the other Final Fantasy titles on Steam have received, but this is an entirely new venture for them to embark upon from where I see it.

i hope they release final fantasy tactics for PC

i love SRPGs, plus i bet that since they are strategy games first and foremost, they will find a reasonably sized audience on PC

I look forward to never buying nor playing it.
Despite my opinions on the game this only seems like a positive to me. More games on PC? Sure, why not?

Genuinely surprised. Though considering how much of a money pit at least in terms of credibility if nothing else FFXIII games have been it was only a matter of time.
I'll predict anemic sales and no boost to Enix's waning credibility as a performer worthy of main event opportunities. They need to perform some classics in the midcard to get people interested in them again, not get jobbed out in a main event that no one wants to see them in. Get that workrate up.

The engine was made to be multiplatform. You might even say that the PC version is the native version and the console versions are ports.

I was really hoping they would finish releasing the good Final Fantasy games before they released that crap, I'm still waiting for IX, VI, XII and Tactics, they should hurry up on those instead of this.

Really glad they went through with it. I remember reading an article a while back where SE said they wanted to bring FF to the PC, and I'm happy they went through with it. Now, if only I had more money right now, and they brought all of them...

I do wonder if the success of this will pave the way for FFXV getting a PC release.

And given FFXV uses the same engine as Kingdom Hearts 3, one has to wonder.

Cool. If this is a good port I'll probably grab it. I remember finishing the first disc of it back when I had an Xbox. It was harmless, if very pretty (at the time). Hope they do a bundle or something when the whole trilogy is eventually released. I hear that each sequel was an improvement over the last.
The funny thing is that while each sequel worked really hard to fix the most prominent issues people had with the previous game, they typically did it at the expense of what the previous game did correctly. XD

It's interesting to note how they have been bringing them back recently. VII and VIII had PC releases back on their original launch, but they both got Steam re-releases over the past few years as well. And then the remakes of III and IV have both only recently been ported to the PC as well. As a few other people have mentioned in here, I would really like to see some of the other games get brought over to the PC, but I think it's pretty interesting that Square has decided to make such a large move in the first place.

To go off on a tangent for a bit, I wonder if this is something that maybe the petition for Dark Souls originally set in motion? If nothing else, I think it may have shown the "mainstream" Japanese RPG developers that PC gamers do actually have an interest in getting JRPGs for their platform. And I can totally get behind that.
