Hmmm, thinking of getting FFXIV. Lag puts me off playing a lot of MMOs these days; was playing ToR until EA took away the Aussie servers.

But supposedly there's a large English speaking contingent on one of the Japanese servers. Decisions..

for how long will the sale go on for?
Just checked. Looks like Sep 20, 11am ET

But honestly GMG has coupon/deals all the time, GMG just cycle them based on demands (we're assuming). Most likely after this coupon dies, it'll fall to 20% or stay full price for a few weeks then in comes another sale/coupon for a week.

Being forced to play on American servers as a European, the latency between server and client really makes itself known at times. It's not enough to get out of the way of an AoE before the target marker disappears, as you're likely to still get hit if you get out at last second.

That said, the AoE attacks seem to always have a significant enough delay that it's never impossible to get out in time. You just have to react immediately and get out of the way.

This game looks like it could be fun, but a lot of what I'm reading in their forums puts me off of it. Between a terrible community and slipshod Customer Service, I dunno if I want to shell out the cash for a copy.

I checked my latency to the Japanese servers, it's still ~250ms. So I guess I'm not getting FFXIV :(.

Yeah, it's difficult to play with anything over 200ms ish if you've played games without that lag. The difference is pretty large. I tried to keep playing WoW after I moved from England, but the lag to Europe from NZ is ~350ms. Which means, as a melee character you'd have trouble with melee range. And global cooldowns would bug. It just wasn't any fun. AoE would also bug, like you said. Interrupts were a looot harder to catch. Heals would sometimes go off late.
Bit of a mess.

But why are you forced to play on American servers? That seems rather odd, I assumed that they would have Euro servers?

All US and EU servers are located in Canada, for some reason.
