FF 13 did not need a sequel. Not necessarily because the game was bad (a highly debatable topic here, i actually liked it), but because the first game wrapped things up pretty nicely. The second game, while it tried to improve many aspects (and for the most part succeeded), went in a direction i did not like.
Says you.

X was better in almost every conceivable way, Tidus notwithstanding.

I hated 13 and the demo to 13-2 didn't inspire any confidence. I think its kind of funny though that 13 is the one getting so much attention when its the most hated Final Fantasy title that isn't an MMO or, featuring a kid named Vaan. I'm just going to continue ignoring this and keep my focus directed at Last Story.

I happen to have liked XIII and XIII-2. XII was the worst, in my opinion.

Now, XIII-2 had a terrible ending. In fact, one could argue that it did not have a proper ending. The only reason that it had what could be considered an ending is that there is a point where the story stops. It just stops, like it ran into a brick wall. The only complaint I have about it is that it did not tell a complete story, though. The gameplay was good and the story, up until the ending, was good.

I'm probably going to pick up XIII-3, if only for the closure that it may bring me. Any other things that I may like about it will be bonuses.

Agreed. I also thought the first game did a good job at wrapping things up at the end. Not really sure why it needed two sequels.

Jeez, between Verus XIII's cancellation and this, it's like Square-Enix is TRYING to piss off it's fanbase.

What do you mean? I loved the story in Final Fantasy 12!

Hell, I didn't even know they made a sequel to FF12!

...Roman numerals are hard, huh?

Fairly young that I am, 13 was my first FF game I had played. I didn't like 13, it didn't live up to my expectations of grandeur coming from the long running series. I realize the games are probably really great; they look good, and turn based RPG's are my favorite kind of games. I did, however, DID like XIII-2. I felt it improved vastly over 13. I doubt they can screw up with XIII-3 considering they improved the game already. And as soon as VII gets re-released, I'm going to buy that and see what I've been missing out on.

Final Fantasy XIII is the only final fantasy
However, after spending so much time grinding out battle after battle, I have to agree with Yahtzee. JRPGs fucking suck.

NO! Just no, look if your not hot for jrpg's that is fine but for the love of god, don't judge the whole genre based on FF13. Play Shin megami tensei persona (3 or 4) these don't have random encounters and, while grind is present, relies more on strategy then raw levels with fairly good writing to boot though it is slow to start (about an hour before the either game really starts),

Look into radiant historia also decently written, a fairly interesting alternating timeline mechanic, no random encounters and a turn based combo system that works,

Better yet if you have a PSP (for some reason) then you MUST play Tactics ogre let us cling together, strong strategic combat also relieing on strategy over raw levels, well written (mostly) virtually no anime cliche's (asuming thats a problem) and virtually every choice the game gives you either effects your path through the game or what characters you can recruit, not to mention it is the very rare game that has the balls to not justify your actions for you, whatever they may be, not to mention a mechanic where you beat the game once and then you can go back to your previous decisions to see how different everything would have been.

And thats just a few stand outs from this generation off the top of my head, I don't expect you to change your view, simply offer alternatives from FF13 and its sequel that showcase (in my opinion) stronger cases for the jrpg.

P.S. also check out valkyria chronicles if you have a PS3 for an atypical example of a JRPG gameplay wise as well as its sequel if you have a PSP, and if you can find it.

says you. OH SNAP DID I JUST TURN THAT AROUND?

On a serious note, i just replayed FFX. The voice acting was terrible, BUT seeing how it was one of SE first attempts at voice acting i will give it a pass. Yuna And Auron were also the only good characters. Combat system was actually annoying for the mediocre random battles (lets see where, i have 2 wakka mobs and 1 tidus mob. Next battle i have 1 auron mob, 1 lulu mob, and 1 tidus mob!), but it worked well for boss battles. And lets not even GO into how annoying some of the ultimate weapons were to get (im looking at you 100x lightning dodges in a row). Seymour was just as unbearable as Tidus.

other than that....yea it was a good game. Had some powerful moments in it. Final boss music was really good.

Even so, i would put the two on nearly the same level honestly. However, im one of the few that does not fall into the love/hate group for FF 13.

I couldn't finish XIII. I got to Gran Pulse, and found there were 60 'hunt the thing' missions and honestly couldn't be bothered. I actually got through most of the railroad-y bits with no problems the second time round (the first time, I put it down after killing Barthandelus the first time and got no further), but when it got to Pulse, I just couldn't do it anymore. I tried desperately to finish it, and put off playing XIII-2, which I had a lot more interest in, so I could try to finish it first. However, a couple of days ago, I picked up XIII-2 and have absolutely LOVED it. Every issue I had with XIII is gone, and I've enjoyed the setting, the plot, the characters, the non-linearity of it all, and hell, even the missions, and they're not all 'go here, hit that until it dies'. So yeah, if they continue it with a sequel, I'll probably get it. But VERSUS XIII, that is a game I NEED to see.
*Hi five* Good to see that someone else liked it! FFXIII-2 is a damn fine Final Fantasy game and surpasses 13 in every way, in FF13, it focused on a predicable plot, boring combat and was so linear you couldn't call it that, it felt like a hallway simulator.

Versus 13 needs to be released! Come on square! Hell, I say 13-2 is in my top 5 of Final Fantasy games (I loved it that much) The Crystarium isn't bullshit like it was in 13 (no game, I don't want Hope to level up his strength stat!) and is even pretty good! I found the Noel/Serah duo an interesting group to follow and they had no romance which was a breath of fresh air.

I will be buy 13-3 day one and I will get Versus 13...If it ever gets freaking released!
Noel was SURPRISINGLY good. Course i was comparing him to Paine (10-2), although the DLC and that modeling in expensive italian clothes certainly did not help my first impression before i bought the game. In fact, i would say that now that i played 13-2 that Noel is one of my favorite FF characters of all time.

I honestly did not think that SE could pull off such a character.

Truth be told, i actually enjoyed the combat less in 13-2.

One, the characters were very much pigeonholed into certain roles. Even though they can unlock a role, their aptitude in that role is horrid compared to the other char.

Two, syn sucks horrendous balls and sentinel is literally required. I tried to beat the final boss using syn but not sentinel. LOL 6.5k one shot my party with full buffs. Next try have my party use sentinel (something i never really leveled) and his 6.5k attack turned into ......1k.....

F you SE.

the hell... for the love of... Can we simply get Vs and Agito/type whatever its called now already?

I get that you can make a game and reuse the assets to allow you to make a follow up quickly but this vapor ware garbage with vs is out of hand and every announcement SE makes that isnt a release date of Vs is a massive slap in the face and bordering on the straw that broke the camels back for what long time supporters they havent managed to alienate yet.

I don't even play Final Fantasy but I was under the impression that both thirteen and thirteen two were dog shit, so why would you make another sequel.

After the ending of XIII-2 I am glad they are making a third. Lightning needs a good ending to her story. I'm also hoping they get the Fal'cie back into the story. I thought they were the most interesting part of XIII, and I was annoyed that they were hardly mentioned in XIII-2. I feel that XIII-3 would be a perfect oppertunity to do something really cool with the fal'cie.

You raise an interesting point with Caius, in that from an emotional level its very easy to see where he is coming from. But I have to wonder why you then have a problem with Hope.

I thought Hope was very much allowed to be whiny in XIII. I mean, he is around 14, sees his mother die in front of him in a conflict they should never have been in in the first place, and he is forced to become the very thing he has been taught to hate and fear for the whole of his life. In that case, I can fully understand why Hope acts the way he does.

That said, I do understand why people didn't like Hope (and also Vanille). They are great characters IMHO, but like the rest of the game, it takes too long for the required character development to take place and by then many people have already made up their minds.

Because Japan loved XIII. Sure, western fans weren't particulary impressed but Japan sure were. According to the wikipedia article, it was voted the best game ever in Famitsu's reader poll. Based on that its not that surprising that Square Enix, a Japanese company, would release a sequal and plan on making a third.
