Oh, I know about GvG and HA and all that, but it's not really a core part of the game. Those are pretty far from being laid back.
It's more laid back in the PvE sense of the game, meaning it doesn't take you hours of grinding to go up by just one level. Also, there's little to no emphasis on gear, so you won't have to spend hours farming just to not get your ass handed to you when you do get into PvP
And on the topic of PvP, you can skip out a essentially all PvE by just making a PvP character: Starts off at level 20, you can unlock any skill/upgrade by simply doing said PvP, and it really helps you test out builds if you ever decide to PvP with a PvE character
