A Nintendo store refurbished one that is.

Finally saved up enough money to buy a refurbished Wii U from the Nintendo store. As such it comes with the discontinued Nintendo Land.

I'm ultra excited for this! Not because I wanted a Wii U for a while now( although that Nintendo Direct didn't help in quelling my excitement) but because this is the first time I've bought a videogame console with my own money, and within at least a year or so after the console's first release.

While this Wii U is mine, the main motivator for buying it at the moment is because my friends and I like to hang out on the weekends, and I decided why not add console gaming to the list of stupid things we do (our top activity right now is watching shitty anime and shrek/TF2 Youtube poops on Youtube.)

Without question the first two games I'm getting for it is Pikmin3 and Mario Kart 8.

Pikmin, because two of my friends love the fuck out of the series, and are currently doing no Pikmin death reruns and they want to play the third one. Mario Kart 8 because it's Mario Kart 8. Not even up for debate honestly.

However there are a fuck ton of games I also want to play. I suppose cheapest to expensive helps, but I also want ones that you guys think as a whole are more worth your time as a Wii u owner so here goes-

I want to get:

W101

NSMBU

NSMBW

DK Tropical Freeze

Sonic Lost World (although reviews have me super shaky on it.)

Rayman Legends

Zombie U

Feel free to add Wii titles to the mix as well. I recently saw Madworld at Gamestop (whether or not it's still there is debateable.)

I currently have Skyward Sword and SMBWii. Most of the Wii games I played were borrowed (having no job means relying on Christmas money to get shit.) So my options are small. Any good Wii game backlogs can help buffer out for Fall season. And since the Wii is an old system I can get them hella cheap! Don't reccomend me any wifi heavy games though. Gamespy being shut down (probably the reason why Nintendo stopped online support for these games.) really did a huge number on games I'm interested in. Wii ports of Gamecube games count as well!

Any recommendations?

Get Rayman Legends before any other platformer. Don't get NSMB Wii, it's crap*. Haven't played many of the other games so can't comment.

Remember if you want to play Wii games you'll need a Wiimote, plus a Sensor Bar, plus a Nunchuck (I forgot and had to wait an extra week to play half my games while Amazon shipped the knock-off versions from Hong Kong).

If your wallet doesn't stretch to Mario Kart quite yet, get Sonic All-Star's Racing Transformed, it's fab. (Haven't played MK8 yet so can't directly compare)

*Normally I'd qualify this with a long explanation, but on this occassion I'll just direct you to the Zero Punctuation where Yatzee proves Rayman > Mario.

Yeah. I think I will ignore it. I know that my sister has it, and they (her friends and various family members who are children.) had a fuck ton of fun with it. But it's only fun with a bunch of people. I think that game just needs a different aesthetic look honestly. Rayman is a good idea though. And I doubt the price is high. I'll start browsing Amazon for solid deals. Should be a good, cheap, price.

Do you mean a Wii sensor bar? Does the Wii U sensor bar not work with regular Wii games? (I doubt it but who knows.) The issue for me is that I have wiimotes (and one of the is wiimotion +, but they are at my parents house. However my sister also uses the Wii so it wouldn't be fair to deprave her of one Wiimote. I guess I'll just have to buy them at some point.

Our original motivator for getting the Wii U was to play MK8 so even if my wallet can't take the strain, we are probably going to get it anyway. I've heard lots of praise for Sonic All-Stars transformed despite it looking really cheesy so I'll definitely give it a whirl. After all I had a fuck ton of fun with Sonic Riders (I miss that series, it needs to come back.) So SEGA( or whoever is in charge of developing their racing games.) knows what they are doing.

I think I might of seen ZP's review on it? Most people have agreed that the Wii U version of Rayman is the best one. Is it better than Mario though I don't really know. I have to play Rayman (actually play it, not the demo play it.) to gauge an opinion on it. I'm not going to let the look of the game deceive me (although I CERTAINLY favor the painterly style over Mario.) that tends to vaporize quickly when the gameplay controls are just a tad too slippery, floaty, stiff, loose, etc. etc.

Well, if you're interested in New Super Mario Bros. you might as well get Super Mario 3D World, since it's the more interesting title in my opinion. Pretty good fun, plus it has four different playable characters (and a secret unlockable one) all with different "stats" (such as run speed and jump height, that kind of stuff, though they're never detailed in the game itself from what I know) that you can switch between freely whenever you select a level.

Also, if you haven't played them/don't have a Gamecube anymore and loved them back in the day, the Metroid Prime Trilogy and Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD are just as good as they ever were. MPT uses Wii motion controls that take a bit of getting used to, but it's not too much of a problem since it's not a fast twitch-based shooter or anything. Wind Waker HD also took aims to speed up some of the slower parts of the game, like sailing around the ocean. You can buy a fast sail at an early point in the game (plenty of posts on the internet explaining how to go about that), they sped up using the Wind Waker itself so that you don't have to watch Link play the song you just played every single time you use it, and they tweaked around the Triforce hunt in the final stretch of the game to be... well, it's still pretty painful, but significantly less so than it was.

I haven't played the Wii U version of Sonic Lost World, but I have played the 3DS version and from what I understand the most significant difference is in the boss fights. If that's true, then I'd say it's potentially worth the buy, if it's ~$20 or lower. I enjoyed it well enough, a solid 7/10 in my book, but there were a few gimmick stages that were too obnoxious and overstayed their welcome and the new control system does take a lot of getting used to.

Also haven't played Tropical Freeze either, but from what I understand it's supposed to be every bit as good as Donkey Kong Country Returns, which I like quite a bit. If it holds to the same design philosophy of Returns, then it's a mostly normal 2D platformer whose level design gets increasingly cruel and punishing as you get further on. Not nearly as hard as the original Donkey Kong Country games, though; they implemented an actual health system in Returns which makes it far more forgiving in any instance where you're not falling down bottomless pits or riding in those damn mine carts.

As for Wonderful 101, from what I've seen it's basically like if you took Viewtiful Joe, Metal Gear Rising/Bayonetta, splashed in a very small amount of Pikmin, and then turned the anime up even further and put it into video game form. It's an incredibly ridiculous game, but that's pretty standard for Platinum, so if that all sounds interesting to you then go for it. There are a lot of secrets and collectibles which you'll never be able to find without looking them up, though.

The Premium Pack WiiUs contain a sensor bar, the Basic ones don't. This caught me out when I got mine.

The Cheesiness is pitched just the right level, with Afterburner and Golden Axe themed tracks amongst others.

For me the controls on Rayman are pitched just about right, when you die its almost always your fault. A lot of the speed runs require a lot of precision and I think the game gives you that. On the other hand with Mario, I'm constantly fighting against his momentum.

Rayman Legends is a great shout its up there with the Mario platformers of old imo truly a great game and much better than Origins which was ok in itself.

I cant in truth reccommend many WiiU games I only have a few and havent played many of them except Rayman Legends which I couldnt stop playing until I completed. There is the Wonderful 101 which I have but I have yet to get time to play it so cant reccommend (but thats not a non recommendation).

I have played New Super Mario Bros WiiU and MK8 at a friends for a few hours each game and I have to say I did not enjoy either game I was very disappointed and believe they are inferior to a lot of what they have done before (mostly I found them to be seriously lacking in the fun factor and MK8 felt very unfinished like it was rushed out).

Im waiting for Bayonetta 2 and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 thats why I actually got my WiiU for. Super Mario 3d land is also a possible acquisition.

For the Wii there is Xenoblade Chronicles, Mario Galaxy (the first one is far superior than the second imo) and The Last Story which are 3 of the best games from last generation on any system as far as im concerned and Xenoblade is my personal 3rd favourite game ever.

NSMB Wii U isn't exactly bad. But you are right, get Rayman first. It is just better.

The problem is NSMB U is so safe. It isn't a bad game, it was a great way to introduce my nephew to Mario, but it is just kind of bland compared to everything else available on the system. It is competently made but does nothing truly interesting. Get Mario 3 or Mario world first, both are cheaper and better 2D Mario's than NSMB U. In fact, this is the one Wii U game I own that I don't recommend to people getting the system. And I love Nintendo, so this isn't Nintendo hate.

Pikmin 3 is really good. I would say it is possibly the prettiest game I have ever played and it is really fun.

Wonderful 101 I love, but it is a platinum game so that was always going to happen.

MK8 is good fun but I hear sonic racing whatever is a better game.

Mario 3d World is one of my favorite games in a very long time.

You have the whole wii backlog to play with it you didn't do that before, there are some really good games on there. Xenoblade jumps to mind.

First off, congratz on purchasing your first console with your own money. My first was a PS2. Loved it to death, and I still have it to this day (well what's left of it).

Anyway, on to my Wii U recommendations (From what I Own):

Super Mario World 3D World: I would highly recommend this over NSMBU. This game is pure 3D platforming goodness. No real challenge, but it is extremely fun. Also good for a quick play if you don't have a lot time. Plays quite well on the game pad if you don't have access to your TV. Also 4 player local multiplayer. I've only had up to 3 players at once, but it was a blast.

Mario Kart 8: I would say a must have, but I've recently come to understand that for some strange reason not everyone likes kart-racing games. Go figure. The game is fun but it is lacking at times. Items are a bit lacking compared to what has been in previous versions. There is also the fact that most people main heavy characters since that comprise most of the meta game. You will see A LOT of Bowser's, Rosalina's, Wario's, DK's, etc. Online is well done and relatively lag free however you do get those buggy races every now and then.

DKC Tropical Freeze: I never picked up DKC Returns on the 3DS so I can't compare the two. However I have played every Donkey Kong on the SNES and I can assure that this game plays like Donkey Kong. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing is completely subjective of course. I'm personally a fan of the DK series and this game is a blast to play. The platforming can be a bit of a challenge until you find you're pacing and timing. Highly recommend.

Rayman Legends: I'm a bit iffy on getting this for the Wii U. It's multi-platform and I actually bought it pretty cheap for my XBone. This is such a well made, and solid platformer, definitely better than NSMBU. If you wanna go with a side scrolling platformer, Rayman is a better choice.

Sonic Lost World: I don't own this game, however there is a demo available on the marketplace I recommend you trying before buying. Not my cup of tea. Sonic Generations was fantastic with both Modern and Classic Sonic, so I really wanted to like this one. I could be wrong, but I don't recommend it.

Pikman 3: Got this for free with my Mario Kart 8 purchase. Haven't gotten very far however of what I have played I like. The only other Pikman I've played was the first one, so if this one plays somewhat the same, then this should be gold.

Wonderful 101: I'm enjoying this game so far. Definitely takes some getting used to. The game requires you to input/draw various shapes and swipes to use various attacks. It was a bit frustrating until I found out you could just use the Pro controller instead. With the Pro controller, you input/draw attack motions with the right stick, which makes controlling your character(or mob i should say lol) much easier. At least for me. Same art style as Viewtiful Joe, only not cel-shaded. I believe there is a demo available, so give that download first to see if you like it.

And that's all I got. Also there is a Wii-U Multiplayer group if you're interested or if you just want to chat about some ninty products or any questions about anything.

I've found Dr Luigi on the eshop to be quite fun, if you want a tetris-like game with some multiplayer elements in it :)

I was under the impression that Rayman Legends is only superior on the Wii U due to the local multiplayer aspect that is exclusive to the Wii U. In that the people with the Wii Motes play while the Weetabix holder gets to draw walls and obstacles onto the game.

It's the superior version because the game was originally a Wii U exclusive and it shows. Local multi player is much more fun on the Wii U because controlling Murphy on other platforms is a mess. You press a button, then pray that the game auto targeted the right platform/enemy etc. At least that's what it looked like comparing the Wii U version and the PC version. Also, i think only the Wii U version has the stages from Origins as unlockable content and daily and weekly challenges (not sure about the last).

OT: Congratulations on your first purchase, it was a good choice. I have a Wii U for 2 months and it's a blast. I will list all of my games on the platform so far:

Mario Kart 8: it's a no brainer, if you want to have fun with your friends. As others have mentioned, Sonic All Stars Transformed IS a better racing game, but it's lacking something MK8 doesn't: it's not that fun. Also, Sonic doesn't have an online community anymore or it was just a bad idea from me to buy it on PC.

Wonderful 101: do you like over the top cartoons like Power Rangers? do you like over the top action games like DMC and Bayonetta? do you like creative game play? if any of these question is yes, than get this game ASAP. I think this is the best game Platinum ever put out. I put 35 hours into the game and there is still the hardest difficulty setting and half of the achievements to complete... so it's full of content AND fun. just beware, this game is VERY unique. so it has a steep learning curve. also the game doesn't explain too much to the player, you have to discover and learn the game's mechanics by yourself. like in the old days.

Legend of Zelda Wind Waker HD: it's the only 3D Zelda game I haven't finished back then, since I didn't have the money for a GameCube as a student :( so, if you are in a position like me, get this game. it's a little slow compared to Skyward Sword, but the aesthetics still hold up, even after 12 years! it's not on my top 3 Zelda games list, but it's a solid entry in the franchise. just don't except anything ground breaking.

Rayman Legends: still haven't played other big platformers on the platform, so I can't compare it to 3D World and Donkey Kong, but it's an amazing game! as i stated above, the Wii U version is the definitive version for local coop. if you played Origins, it's pretty much more of the same solid and amazing platforming, with a lot of absurd French humour. if you didn't, well the Wii U version contains Origins in it's entirety.

Trine 2: this is the most surprising game for me on the platform. i was bored of the first Trine after half an hour, but Trine 2 is a very fun game. especially in local multiplayer. as with Rayman, the Wii U version is the definitive version. the graphics are on par with the PC version's highest graphics setting and it plays in 1080p, unlike the PS360 version, which is 720p and the graphics are muddy (and the Wii U is called underpowered... go figure). also, local coop is more fun, than online coop IMO, that's why i put it above the PC version. also, playing this game with a standard controller is a mess compared to playing it with a mouse or a GamePad + Wii Remote combo.

The only iffy one is Sonic; all the platformers are great (I really don't get why people bash NSMB other than Yahtzee doing it first).

Deus Ex is really good if you're into FPS RPGs, Super Mario 3D World is a great platformer that does some crazy things with level design, MH3 is good if you're into that. RE: Revelations is another great shooter that's pretty much a 1:1 translation from the 3DS version. And of course there's Wind Waker HD.

As for Wii games some recommendations:

Muramasa: The Demon Blade
RE4: Wii Edition
Zack and Wiki
Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2
Metroid Prime 3 (or the Trilogy if you can find it)/Other M
The Last Story
Xenoblade
Pandora's Tower
Little King's Story
No More Heroes
A Boy and his Blob
Madworld
Kirby's Epic Yarn
Kirby's Return to Dreamland
Punch-Out!!
Sin and Punishment
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

There's probably a lot I'm missing, but there's always Wikipedia and Gamefaqs for more comprehensive stuff. Still, read up on what they're like before committing.

What hasn't been said already for the Wii...

Well, there's a Wii version of Okami if you haven't played that already.

Trauma Center is also an interesting series, though naturally translated better to it's original DS home; though 'New Blood' is a Wii game from the ground up.

Also, Virtual Console games tend to look really, really surprisingly good on the gamepad, considering we're all using monitors of such a resolution to do unkind things to pixelated graphics.

Not the GBA ones though ('cept maybe LoZ Minish Cap), that was a silly idea.

Madworld is pretty fun, it can be a bit repetitive but it's got a unique as hell look to it. No More Heroes 1 and 2 are both worth a shot.

Wonderful 101 is a hell yes. Completely bat-shit insane to boot.

Monster Hunter Tri U if you can deal with the grindy nature to it, since you'll be fighting big monsters over and over for their parts but it's got a lot of unique features, each weapon feels unique to itself and you can do things like cut tails, break wings or make a giant sand fish eat barrel bombs and explode itself out of the sand.

Some downloadable ones are also great. Earthbound is available on the eShop and a great game called Stick it to The Man, which is a sticker based puzzle game. It's fairly easy but the aesthetic on it is wonderful and very phychonauts-esk.

Also, if you're getting a Digital Deluxe one, don't forget to go to ddp.nintendo.com to get cash back whenever you download things from the eShop.
