So I recently had my third battle with Personal Antivirus.

For people that don't know what it is; Its basically a virus that latches itself onto your computer telling you about all these fake security problems and asking you to pay for full version. A scam basically. The only problem is, it crashes your computer. That's right, everything you try to open is blocked the hell out because it is "dangerous"

Now, our first two encounters ended with me having to nuke my entire computer hard drive. Luckily, I beat that mother fucker this time. I killed that ************ good

Simply, I used the "System restore" feature to restore my system to a time before I had that mother fucking virus. So yes.. I FUCKING WIN.

You have no idea how fucking happy I am right now. Last time it took one of my massive Oblivion Mods that I was creating. (Luckily I was able to find a prior version that I published and work from that). But still. FUCK YOU PERSONAL ANTIVIRUS .... SUCK IT.

You may think I'm over reacting, but seriously. You have no idea how much of a pain this thing is!

However, there are some battle wounds. So who ever can, please help. After the reboot, I found myself unable to open some programs that I had downloaded (Like Firefox). Now, I can get them to open but each time it asks me "What do you want to open this with". And each time I click "Open with Firefox" it asks me to download it. Even though I already have it. So I just click cancel and I can browse freely. Can someone tell me how to get this to stop?

And for added discussion, what was the last virus you had to deal with. Or last foe you beat up?

EDIT: I haven't tried reinstalling, mostly because I'd rather not since the file exists anyways. This thing is also effecting things like Paint. So I don't know what to do about that

I'm not really sure if this will help, but it may: Try uninstalling Firefox and possibly the programs you have trouble opening, then reinstalling them.

Also: Really happy for you! :D

Nice job.
The last virus I had completely destroyed my hard drive, so I got a new one, and made my old one explode.

First thing: Safe Mode and System Restore are your friend. Thats how I beat my last virus.

Second thing: Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling firefox?

Last foe I beat up was my WoW addiction (there is no other word for it) which was dispelled after the power went out while my computer was downloading a series of 95 updates for vista.

My computer was so screwed up that it's OS didn't even exist any more; we couldn't even run a diagnostic.

After two or three reformats and a failed switch to Ubuntu (wouldn't connect to our internet), I settled back into Vista, and started re downloading all my Steam games, re-bought the WH:40K:DoW platinum pack, etc etc, but the one thing I didn't do was get WoW back, because I didn't want to sit through the wait.

TL;DR- I am a lazy ass, and it saved me from my addictive personality. Just this once.

I used the System Restore the first time it happened to me. I got it again when I was on a particular website, the details of which I will not eschew here... <_<. Again, I did System Restore and it was all sorted straight away.

My point is, System Restore is the first port of call for anything that gets through my Norton 360 firewall. So this is hardly news to me.

Oh, I understand how annoying it is. My first battle I lost, crashed my computer. Hard drive didnt work, wouldnt system restore, and OS was uninstalled. The second time I found the fucker on another one on my comps and killed it. Immediately ended all excess programs, uninstalled and reinstalled anything that was functioning, including firefox, and used my real antivirus to find where it was hiding and kill it. I was so happy. It tried a third time on a third computer, but AVG is made of WIN sauce so my computer is safe. Unfortunately the thing got far enough to screw over the browser, so it crashes on certain websites WAY more, like once or twice a day. Firefox is good still, functioning just faster than Internet Explorer.

Hmm. Are you launching directly from the program file or through a shortcut? From the sounds of the virus it was digging in to run alongside the programs, thus possibly causing the oddity.

Last virus I had to tangle with was Antivirus Live. It was basically like what attacked yours. It kept telling me that everything was infected and wouldn't let me open the programs. I found out a way to keep it at bay until I could kick its ass, however. I just opened Task Manager the second my computer got to the desktop, scanned for processes I've never seen before and ended them as soon as they popped up.

Took a few scans, but I finally got rid of that little fucker.

Well, currently, this computer is being stalked by a mal-ware virus. Can't remember what it's called at the moment, but it basically does the same thing (excluding the crashing programs part).

It has been wiped and re-loaded 3 times, and the fucker always seems to find this comp. It blocks websites like ModDB, saying that it "May have potential viruses".

The next time it latches it's cybernetic tendrils onto this computer's hard drive, I'll have to try that.
