I had the same virus and my parents are too stubborn and not willing to listen to me that they didn't understand that the only way to fix the virus was a hard drive wipe or system restore. So instead of nuking the harddrive and using our nice just like new computer, we ended up using our old PC. My parents kind of suck at appliances.

I never get virus for some obscene reason. I guess I only download from reliable sites.

However recently I kept on getting BSOD. I was so very confused, because every time I started up my computer it would crash to a blue screen. I spent ages in safe mode trying to figure it out. I opened my computer and removed two sticks of ram and then did a system restore and things were back to normal. Happy days.

Congrats on getting rid of the virus.

The last really big virus I had to deal with was a bloody worm. I went on some site and it infected my computer and prevented me from doing anything. Thousands of pop up ads and the same thing you were going through. I had to do the same thing you did and used system restore to go back when I didn't have it. I was going crazy though thinking it was gonna destroy my computer.

I'm not really sure if this will help, but it may: Try uninstalling Firefox and possibly the programs you have trouble opening, then reinstalling them.
this. I had a bout with two viruses, the first was the wii a virus called SpySheriff. Did exactly the same thing as Personal Antivirus. The second one was a deviant little scheme made by someone, that deletes your Recycle Bin the first time you try to open it. I had been deleting crap and deleting crap, and when I went to empty it, it dissapeared. I worked my magic on both things and eventually, they were gone. anyways, after spysheriff, everything basically pretended it didnt exist. i just-- redownloaded it. 'cept for the recycle bin. had to get that file off the internet and put it back into my System 32 files.

I had that similar virus to yours, I think it may have been called Antivirus2008 or some other nonsense.

There was but one course of action:

[HEADING=1]EXTERMINATUS![/HEADING]
I kept all my important files on a second hard drive anyways.

actually it doesn't matter. some sites can be "infected", as in someone will put a virus on it, and if you merely visit a site, itll give it to you. its how i got SpySheriff.

I forget what it was called, but it corrupted files, copied itself whenever you opened Internet Explorer, and redirected me whenever I used keywords like the viruses name or anything that may let me have a chance of deleting it.

But i had a flash drive and a program called Avenger on it. Killed that ass-licking virus good.

There's a really handy FireFox addon called NoScript that I use, it prevents websites from running any sort of JavaScript until you "allow" it. It's a little annoying but once you "allow" all the stuff you normally use (escapist, other forums, whatever else you do on the internet that is or isn't porn) then it'll help block stuff like ads and other crap that tries to latch on to your computer and generally fuck around.

Also, Avast! scans any file/program in use, and I also use SuperAntiSpyware if I want to scan something manually, just to make sure. It's a winning combination.

I had a virus just like this a few weeks ago, was called Antivirus Soft I think. To remove it, I just googled for a guide to get rid of it, so you may want to try that. <url=http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-personal-antivirus>Click for guide (I know you've already removed it, but it seems like it might still be messing with your system.) Or if that fails, just do what everyone else said, and try to reinstall and see if that works.

There was this one virus which was a ***** to get rid of. Can't remember the name, but it's meant to be one of the hardest viruses to get rid of; even formatting isn't absolutely going to get rid of it. I had to format to get rid of it, so it's more bitter-sweet.
