We've all been guilty of it. I'm talking about pointless collecting in games. Several of today's games include random collecting in them. Whether it is for upgrades, unlockables, or just for the sake of it they all have them. I want to know, what is the most time you spent searching for random collectables in a game.
Finally, the last one...what do I do now?

I spent forever collecting the flags in Assassin's Creed for the stupid Acheivements.
Spent about 5 days worth of excessive game time to get them and then gave up when I had 99/100 for the Kingdom and couldn't find the last one after many hours of searching...

I'm still trying to "Catch 'em all". I'm at 573 in Pokemon White, but I'm missing a handful of legendaries that I know I won't be able to get easily.
I think the only time I ever did this to completion was collecting all 120 Power Stars in Super Mario 64. I loved the heck out of Mario 64 and didn't want it to be over once I'd beaten it, so I became determined to squeeze ever last drop of gameplay out of that cartridge by going for every possible star. I even went to the first Bowser stage and ran around collecting the coins that his fire breath sometimes leaves behind, thinking there might have been a secret 100-Coin Star there that I had missed.
Bear in mind, this was before I had the Internet, so I was largely ignorant of most gaming secrets. I was going for all the stars primarily out of desperation to keep playing, not to get some great reward. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that the cannon outside the castle finally opened up once I hit 120!

Well I spent a good few hours collecting resources on the horrid Mass Effect 2 planet minigame, I hope the guy who thought that should be a cruicial game mechanic get's shot

Put in a good week and a half scouring the cities for those damned flags only to be missing 1 or 2 in each city and having to do it all over again. Actually got lightheaded when it was finally over.
I collected all the Thermoses in Alan Wake I could. Strange, normally I don't care about that sort of thing when there's no gameplay benefit.
