Hey everyone,

I'm a programmer and for a while now I've been wanting to program a game. Nothing fancy. Nothing commercial. I just want to experience what it's like to program a real game.

Obviously I've programmed things like hang-man, tetris, pong and all kinds of things like that but they aren't really my creations. I'm just recreating something that's already been created.

So I'm looking for an actual project to create an original game and I'd like to do so in a team. Both because I'm well aware of my limitations as both a designer and artist and because creating things with a (good) team is much more fun than doing it alone.

I've tried looking for something to join before but the problem I consistently run into is that most of the activity seems from people who are under the delusion that they have the greatest game idea of all time and want other people to create it for them so that they can get rich (bit of a hyperbole but I hope you get the point).

So what I'd like advice on is where to find people with realistic expectations and talents with whom I can create a game for the simply joy of creating a game.

With realistic expectations being the following:
- The game is going to be short, 2D, ugly, buggy and boring.
- Nobody is going to spend any money on this game, neither us nor others.
- This is purely a hobby project to occupy us in our free time.
- The goal is the act of creation, not the actual finished product.
- In all likelihood there won't ever be a finished product, but that's completely fine.

So any advice like websites that have this sort of community? Maybe someone who shares my expectations and would be interested in joining? Anything else that would help?

i guess you could use gamedev.net its a big development site im sure theres a lot of people wanting to help on projects and just work on stuff. you could go to ploycount to try find artists there a lot of very talented people on there.

and at a stretch try to see if you can find game development events in your area, there may not be any around and even if there is they can be hard to find but GameJams and general meetings are a great way to find people.

i do agree with what you said about "designers" aswell a lot of people just think they have this awsome idea for a game but dont have any of the skills or understaning to make it, when as a designer you need to know everything, and you really dont want to work with someone who is like that

How old are you? If you're in college you should have no trouble getting together a group of classmates to help you out. Extra Creditz had some info about hobby game development in one of their episodes.
