Fired Assassin's Creed Creator Opens Panache Digital Games

[tweet t="https://twitter.com/PatriceDez/status/532620580689027073"]

A year and a half after parting ways with Ubisoft for presumably the last time, ousted developer Patrice Desilets has opened a new game studio.

The creator of Assassin's Creed may not be celebrating the launch of two new games in the series this week, but the ousted Ubisoft developer has some good news of his own. Patrice Desilets has opened up a new studio, Panache Digital Games [http://www.panachedigitalgames.com/], as he announced on Twitter. The newly launched Panache website only has a logo so far; no projects have been announced, though Desilets teased that news would be coming "soon."

The creative director of the early Assassin's Creed games sued Ubisoft [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/101319-Assassins-Creed-Creative-Director-Leaves-Ubisoft] the following month.

As for Assassin's Creed, Ubisoft followed up the well-received Black Flag with the launch [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/138595-Ubisoft-Addresses-Assassins-Creed-Unity-Criticism] of Assassin's Creed Unity just a few days ago. It was accompanied on store shelves with the last-gen-only Assassin's Creed Rogue, which didn't make its way to reviewers until launch day.

Desilets' co-founder at Panache is another Ubisoft alum and casualty of THQ Montreal, Jean-Francois Boivin. As for Desilets' lawsuit against Ubisoft and the game he was working on post-THQ, there's been no update, so it's unclear if his first project at Panache will be a work in progress or a fresh start.

I honestly hope the game he was originally working on will still see the light of day, I'd hate to find out that Ubisoft have screwed the guy out of his own idea.

I can only wish the best for mister Desilets. Being a Montrealer myself, I'm always proud to see one of our guys stick his neck up in the tumultuous seas of Quebec-based game developers. For every puzzling abortion like the studio that shat out Gary's Incident, we have subsidiaries for bigger studios that manage to transcend their status as "The Big House's Little Pet Project" and build up a solid reputation.

The current Unity kerfuffle nonwithstanding, Ubi Montreal managed it. I can only hope Panache will manage one strong hit for its first project - a bit like Red Barrels did with Outlast.

Not sure if this came because i posted this in another Ubisoft news thread comments or not but i got to say im interested in what this got to show.

He won a lawsuit against Ubisoft and while its unknown if the IP in question was given to him, his lawsuit money could make him afford a game studio and so far he done good job. This is one of those "cautiuosly interested" things where just got to wait and see where it goes.

He must be having a hell of a week. Launching a new studio while Ubi is falling over their own shit with Unity and, most likely Rogue as well.

Right as Assassin's Creed is starting to take a plunge into mediocrity. Hopefully the hand of god doesn't get in his way like the last time.
