Ok, so here goes. I'm wondering exactly why Firefly has the cult following it has.

I'm on the third episode, and while it is a very good show, I'm still unsure as to why it has the massive fan-base that it does, considering there were only fourteen episodes.

Anyone able to explain this to me?

Because it is one of the most awesome shows ever! Course this is only my opinion. To each thier own.

On a more serious note, it's drama, it's comical, it's sci-fi, it's western, it's got great characters, and it enfolds all of that in a nice neat package so people of different tastes can still like it. Take me for instance, I'm NOT a fan of sci-fi, but I absolutely love the drama and comedy. The "old west" feel is just a perk.

Maybe finishing the series will give you a clearer picture?

And simply because there's nothing quite like it. It's essentially a western set in space and it's just as awesome as that sounds.

The characters are brilliant, the episodes are a perfect blend of drama and comedy and it just all goes together so perfectly.

Really good writing.
Really good cast.
Lots of potential.
And BAM - gone.

It's the tease of it. None of your questions will ever be answered (other than the ones in the Serenity movie). So all you ever have is that great, unfulfilled potential. Forever.

Effectively this.

That and, if I had the option to use them, the Reavers are the only horror where id feel sorry for the victims I just unleashed them on.

Because you will see as it goes along that it has one of the most likable, relatable, well-developed casts of characters of any show ever, even just within those 14 episodes. And the potential it had to go farther was cut short by stupidity on Fox's part. You'll see. Keep watching.

You are watching the episodes in the correct order, right? They aired out-of-order, so if you watch them as they aired, the pilot will be the last episode you'll see.

If you have watched them in order and don't understand the series greatness after the pilot concludes, then there's no point in me trying to explain it to you.

I have the box set. They're in order.

It's just personal opinion. And your's is wrong.
I'm sorry, but could you be any more of a dick?

I'm three episodes in, I just said it was good so far, but I'm wondering why it's renowned as it is. I never said anything bad about it.

Because it is the live action equivalent of Cowboy Bebop aka It's own flavor of awesome. That said, both bebop and firefly do still stand apart on their own merits but both are awesome in the same way, hence why i mentioned them together. Everyone else has already explained the other reasons for what made Firefly it's own flavor of awesome, so i'll just leave it with that.

It is a hugely clever and diverse show. It switches from serious to hysterical in a heartbeat and feels completely natural when doing so. The characters are varied, fleshed out and interesting. The ship itself, as well as all of the environments are absolutely gorgeous. The kicker, for me, is the language/script. I could sit and listen to the nine different characters converse with each other forever. Whedon is the greatest scriptwriter in TV history (in my opinion)
Firefly is nothing short of genius. You can't take the sky from me!

Sorry, it was just an attempt at humour, I didn't mean to offend you.

Just wait till disc 2. Jaynestown, Shindig, and Mrs. Reynolds are amazing.
Well I'm just about to start watching Shindig now. So far the show seems enjoyable, but at the moment I'd still rate Battlestar Galactica higher.

It's a good show, but it wouldn't be half as popular is it is if it wasn't canned halfway through its run. It was treated really badly by the network and as a result, people kicked up a fuss about it, news spread, word got around and ironically the attempt to can it only made it more popular than ever. The film Serenity kind of closed everything off though, and it was never a mainstream enough show to warrant bringing back. As a result, it's often seen through rose-tinted specs because of how shittily it was treated. No denying it was very high quality though.

I will never forgive them for cancelling Firefly. The best Sci-Fi show of the 00s.

You clearly do not appreciate the glory that is Jayne, the Space Redneck. XD
