Well for starters, a bunch of people won't like it purely because it's anime.
That shows that some people have odd opinions on anime.

But generally it's suspension of disbelief, anime characters can get away with things like jumping ridiculous heights and having drawn out stylised battle scenes.
A live action show can't get away with that, it's just generally levels of expectation from each medium and the suspension of disbelief you are willing to give them.

Because Nathan Fillion is awesome. Loved him in Firefly, love him in Castle, and I just discovered him today on a re-run of 2 guys, a girl and a pizza place.

Ok, so here goes. I'm wondering exactly why Firefly has the cult following it has.

I'm on the third episode, and while it is a very good show, I'm still unsure as to why it has the massive fan-base that it does, considering there were only fourteen episodes.

Anyone able to explain this to me?
It combines many good aspects of western's and futuristic sci-fi? It has an amazing cast really good interaction between the characters? It's funny as all hell?

It taps into a less than used genre that is to stay the Space Western.

Also excellent acting, setting, scripting, directing, plotting, characterising and many other things that are good and decent in this wotld that end in ...ing.

That and there's also the man they call Jayne.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgX-7ebLOdw

You clearly do not appreciate the glory that is Jayne, the Space Redneck. XD
... I officially love this show.

"I say Zoe gets naked."
"Nope."
"I could get naked?"
"No...."

Jayne is hilarious xD
There you go. The first 3 eps are meh, continue watching as you have. My favourite is Jaynestown, cuz Jayne is awesome! Once you're don you'll be as crazy as us!

The reason we all still love it is cuz we never got closure. And I hated Serenity, it was waaay too rushed. I'd like to have it non-canonised and have firefly continue right where it left off. Also I want magic powers.

Go watch Cowboy Bebop and come back.

To be honest, this was the only Whedon series I liked. Buffy was crap (I mean, come on! From the Valley Girl campy movie to the genetic precursor of Twilight and True Blood?), Dollhouse isn't even worth talking about...

But this was good work. Good writing, relatable characters and story work... especially with the developing over-reaching government issues in our real world. Plus, it had attention to detail (silent explosions in space, for instance), a feature sadly lacking in our short-attention-span-theatre culture.

It also had a delightful sort of "I don't care what anyone thinks" attitude to it. Sort of like what made Boston Legal fun to watch, they caricatured the events of the present and made satire out of serious matter.

Finally, to borrow a line from Castle that sums it up well: "Space Cowboy." :)

I tried to get into it but it just wasn't happening. Shame, because I'm an Adam Baldwin fan for his role in Chuck. I had similar experiences with other Joss Whedon shows, so maybe something about his style just doesn't work for me.

Keep going. Whedon shows have kind of a high "buy-in"--the story and characters take a little while to really take shape, but you'll start getting into the real "ah ha!" moments pretty soon. By the end, you'll find yourself wanting more, yet frustrated as to why there isn't more, and that explains the rabid fan base.

For me, it's the characters. The story is there, and it works in a "hold things together" capacity, but the real feature is character development. Each character has an arc, developing at a different pace, and you really get a feel for them as people... and you'll find two or three you might get more invested in than others. Joss Whedon has his failings, but the man can handle a true ensemble of characters.

...because it has a certain "warmth" to all aspects of it. The whole show just kinda feels organic, you can sense that the people loved doing it.
