I think it was Super Mario Land on the old-school Gameboy. We still have the game and the Gameboy that we originally played it on ? one of those ancient brick ones.

I believe my first was Sonic The Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis. I remember watching my Dad play it all the time, and eventually he started to let me play it. Good times :D

Grandstand's Star Force, around 1987-89

I think it is this one - definitely a spaceship combat handheld arcade. Those things were pretty popular, I suppose-- I don't know, I was only 3 at the time.

I will only be sure if this is the right one when I get home, so I can hear the video (no sound at work). The game over music is a digitised piece of classical music, that much I remember.

Sonic on the Genesis (or was it dream cast? I was young). It was those first few years of spin dashing through those grassy first levels (over and over again...I wasn't very good) that would set me on the path for life, spin dashing my way through Games...Which is why I feel a part of me break every time they make a lousy 3D sonic game

I cant remember which was first, but it was either:

Tomb raider 2. I don't remember much of the actual game, but I do remember the home level where I'd always lock the creepy butler in the freezer.

or

Sonic the hedgehog. I can't remember which one, but i know that the 'drowning' music terrified me as a kid.

Played both of these on an ancient PC... ah, good times.

Asteroids, 2600. I had a friend who's father freakin' adored me (I don't know why) and after he tried it for a few minutes he placed the joystick in my hand; been hooked since.

That would be Final Fantasy, the first and thus the most deceptive of the franchise. :p

I must have played that game 10 times or more, all the way through... 'twas a good game for its time, though I don't really see where the replay value came in. Kind of amazing how far we've come in terms of story depth, customization, etc.

first console game or game period? First game period would have been pacman at the arcade. My first console game was Gex. Sigh, the memories.

Tekken 3 for PS1. I remember being introduced to it by a friend from New Jersey. Of course now I'm not the button-masher I was back then. And my brother is one of the most respected Paul players on PSN.

Ah, the first one I can remember playing is Ocarina of Time on the N64, such a glorious game. That's probably part of the reason why I keep telling everyone that it's the greatest fucking game ever.

I've probably played games earlier than that, but I was too young to remember. I do remember very faintly that my dad had a SNES, but I can't recall playing it.
See, this amuses me, for when I first picked up Ocarina of Time (on release date mind you, although that was Australian release date, so y'know, plus a year give or take) I remeber clearly clicking through the manual before playing (yes, that old) and thinking to myself, "Hmm, this is the greatest leap in control complexity I've seen in a game for a long time. I bet if I hadn't played all the previous games in the series, I'd be lost. Worse, I fear if this were my first game ever, I'd be up a creek without a paddle." You are now the first person I've heard of to have this title as your first game ever.

So thank you. Thank you for finally proving me ever-so-decisevely wrong.

After a bit more sprunging, I do believe it was Grandstand's Firefox F-7.

The box and D-stick look more familiar than Star Force. So tonight I will go home to seek footage of the game-over music. I can't for the life of me remember the piece of music they used, but it was a famous classical piece!

Edit: Yep, it's I Vow to Thee, My Country (A section of Jupiter from Holst's The Planets). It also has Ride of the Valkyries, and one other I can't quite put my finger on!

Anyone know?

Fucked if I can remember that far back. It was on the C64 though.
Possibly possibly it was Bubble Dizzy/Dizzy Down the Rapids. Failing that, Batman or Flimbo's Quest.
Honestly though, I can't recall exactly which one was my first ever.
