When I was really young I asked what guns were. That's one of the first things my father told me. I don't remember if he said it as a joke though....jhlip said:Lol. You're kidding right? Yeah. That's a huge advantage for me. It's something good to learn with.MrDeckard said:I found Rifles are FAR easier to learn with, though that Ruger is what I first shot.
Try to stick with .22 though. The ammo is dirt cheap.
If you have that kind of money to spend, I would recommend an FN Five-Seven.CM156 said:Firstly, let?s not turn this into a gun rights/gun control debate thread. We have an R&P section for that.
Anyhoo?
I?m looking at buying my first gun. Specifically, I?m looking for a handgun.
According to the internet, I need to be 18 to buy a gun in my state (Missouri), which I am. Now, I?ve been looking around for several months, and here?s what I know
*I have anywhere up to $1500-2000 to spend at the most. But because this is the first gun I?m getting, it doesn?t have to be too fancy
*I?m looking at something for recreation, not self-defense. When I apply for a CC for my state (Which is five years down the line), I?ll get a different weapon.
*The gun should be something good to learn with. So nothing too complex, but at the same time, something that I can get better with
*I don?t mind if the weapon requires upkeep after use, but I?ll be keeping it off campus, and using it during breaks when I go home. So it needs to be something that can go a while without being touched. A term is about 10 weeks at my school. (My father has a gun-locker at home, which has room, so safe storing isn?t an issue)
During my research, I?ve found a gun I?m partial to
It?s a Ruger® 22/45? Rimfire Pistol

My ultimate question is what any other gun people would recommend for a first gun.
I know I'm going to sound like a newbie for asking this but why do those bullets have a blue tip?tsb247 said:If you have that kind of money to spend, I would recommend an FN Five-Seven.CM156 said:Firstly, let?s not turn this into a gun rights/gun control debate thread. It would eat up a large portion of your budget, but it seems to meet all of your criteria. However, I'm not certian 18 is old enough for a handgun in Missouri. As a Kansas resident (and someone who used to live a stone's throw away from Missouri) I seem to remember them having similar age restrictions on firearms; specifically being 21 to buy a handgun. Then again, I could be wrong.
Anyhow...
As an owner of an FN Five-Seven, I can say this.
It's accurate, has a high magazine capacity (20 rounds!), and fires a round that performs similarly to a .22 Magnum, but with a little more... Bang!
The only real con I have found is that ammo runs about $25 a box (50 rounds), but it's well worth it in my opinion. It's like carrying a mini P90 in a holster! Well, that and it's noisy as hell, but I rather enjoy the thundering report!
You can probably pick one up for about $900 to $1200 depending on where you get it. I LOVE mine, and I would never trade it for anything! I saved up for over a year to get mine - a bargain at $825!
The blue tips are, "Ballistic tips." They are plastic cones designed to deform upon impact. The bullet will tumble end-over-end upon entering a target and cause more damage. In general, the plastic tip fits into a hollow point on the end of the bullet. It has the benefits of a hollow point without the loss of the bullet shape.CM156 said:I know I'm going to sound like a newbie for asking this but why do those bullets have a blue tip?
So I take it that those sorts of bullets are used more for self-defense situations, correct?tsb247 said:The blue tips are, "Ballistic tips." They are plastic cones designed to deform upon impact. Oh that is some quality equipment, but I like to fire blood out of my hands and turn into a pool of blood, can't go wrong with that! Looks a lot like this.lRookiel said:Well I live in the UK and I like the standard issue Red Death phaser, as well as using the Time warp staff, AND dressing as a tentacle. looks a lot like this!
