So about a month ago a friend of mine told me to watch the anime: Death note; now I had never watched anime(or read a manga) in my life(only pokemon as a child). So I was pretty skeptic about the whole thing, my view of anime was; that it is weird for the sake of being weird(which is true for some) and that anime in general is pretty lame form of entertainment.
Boy was I wrong, after watching Death note I was astonished about its bold story, never had I seen a story where the main character is completely evil and at the same time the story expects you to sympathize with him. This was very refreshing as I love playing evil in RPGs and I had never seen that done in an actual story, this to me was a wakeup call that I had been dulled to sleep by mediocre stories.
Now during this month I am supposed to work on my bachelor thesis which I turned in yesterday, which of course means that instead of doing that, I kept watching animes ><, at this point I have seen quite a few and I wanted to share my opinions as well as my experiences to others that also consider watching anime.

Before I talk about the animes I have watched I want to go through some common traits I?ve noticed that keep appearing in animes.

Protecting = Love
For some odd reason instead of characters saving I love you, instead they?ll say something like I promise to protect you. My guess is this is something is lost in translation or maybe Japanese people really value protection.

Men > women
In anime however strong, independent or cleaver a female character may be their biggest dream is always to become a house wife by the side of a man and all characters in the anime assume this to be true. Maybe it is because animes are written by men, but to me it always comes off as a bit strange from what I am used to from western culture. For instance there was a wife in the anime death note that asks into a murder case, because she might be able to help after which her husband responds something in the lines of: ?Stupid female you accepted the role of wife so now you shouldn?t bother your little head about it?. Then when he dies you find out she was 10 times more badass than he was.
Anime people and real people
In anime the main characters are often distinguished by having crazy hair style/color and/or crazy personalities. Other people in the story acts like this is perfectly normal, the better animes don?t do this as much but they are all guilty of it.

Western people = aristocrats
Whenever there are western people such as the British, they are always high born noble aristocrats sipping tea in big castles. They are generally treated as a fascination in anime, since they are treated with respect in terms of how they interact in the story, such as they are not always arrogant and most of the time are very likable, but also bound by rules of conduct. I don?t know if this is just coincidence or if Japanese actually thinks this to be true, however I find it quite hilarious and it always puts a smile on my lip :p

Main characters are often underdeveloped
Some of the animes which has potential to be truly great wastes it all by having really dull one-dimensional main characters that has one wish and then does everything in his/her power to fulfill that wish, as such the story finds contrived ways for the character to get involved in the main plot and this often take you out of the experience.

Most romance in anime is awful and often feels robotic
Now there is nothing wrong with romance in general. However anime has an overreliance on simply making the two characters(female and male) look at each other while looking embarrassed, this is especially bad when the scene is mercilessly drawn out to about 10 mins. Often what will happen is that something/someone ?accidentally? pushes the female or male character into the other character; the two characters will then share with you, what feels like an hour of them looking embarrassed at each other shown by having red lines drawn under the eyes. This is done over and over throughout almost all animes and adds nothing to the anime except I have to skip ahead until it is over. Personally I got the feeling(after continually having to endure this) that anime almost takes a very childish approach to romance since things like kissing rarely happens which baffles my mind.

Season 2 Sucks
Very rarely is the second season of any anime good, for some it is but mostly it is like someone bludgeoned the writers in the head just before they started writing the second season. As such some of the recommendations I am going to make will specifically only be about the first season.

--- My List of animes I have watched ---

I have sorted the animes I have watched into tiers since ranking them would do them no justice as it would be like ranking your offspring. However before I go through these I will shortly explain what kinds of entertainment I like so that you get an idea of where this is coming from.
I am generally a lover of character pieces I love the way in which a certain character views the world and how that view affects his/her actions, as such I love RPG games/DND since it often focuses on the understanding of a character. Furthermore I love medieval settings and SCI-FI settings, but general I like medieval settings more. I prefer a good story to good visuals however when animes succumbs to cartoonish reaction drawings of faces(you know Big water drop to indicate they are nervous or the head being bigger than the entire body when they are yelling) it always takes me out of the story and as such I try to avoid animes that does this, for some odd reason the comedy tag is often thrown on an anime that is simply doing this, even if it has no actual comedy.

--- TIER 1 --- GOD TIER animes even people that think they hate anime should watch

Death Note:
Yes the anime that go it all started for me, it?s a brilliant and very exciting story with very interesting characters. Now the show do dramatically decrease in quality in season 2 where the writers completely missed an opportunity to progress the story and instead chooses to restart it with a worse cast of characters, however it was still very entertaining.

Steins; Gate:
The first 6 episodes are kinda boring, however they were meant to explain the characters in the story and as such I can?t fault them too much. What comes after however is a very cleaver very exciting tale, its hard to describe just how awesome it is but if you want something great you should definitely watch this. Furthermore it rarely/never becomes stereotypic and the romance in the anime is very well done, as well as pleasant to watch(unlike almost all other romance in animes).

Code Geass
This is the second anime I watched after death note and I momentarily believed all animes was of this quality. The story is very epic and very expansive with a ton of well-defined, well developed characters. Even the stupid stereotypical anime characters serve a purpose and add meaning to the story. At times when I watched it I thought how were they ever going to resolve this story without lames excuses but the writers actually manages to pull off an ending as epic as the story itself. If I were to point out some bad things then it would be that the story has an over reliance on boring mech battles to pad out the story where it is never explained who can beat who and its always some techno babble that decides who win or loses. Even so you should 100% watch it since you will like it.

Puella magi Madoka magica( or Madoka magica)
There is a saying that goes: ?never judge a book by its cover?, and I can?t think of anything more fitting to say. The anime starts out by tricking you into thinking it?s going to be really really lame, only to rip the heart out from your chest and hammer it until it?s cold and empty. The story is incredibly sad and even a hateful person such as myself had wet eyes after watching this masterpieces of a story. The only thing I hate about this anime is that it has forced me to watch many episodes of really bad animes, in hopes they would turn around and become as great as Madoka magica. If you watch 4 episodes and still don?t like it then maybe you can stop but I doubt you will. Oh one more thing, the music in this anime deserves a special mentioning as it some of the best I have heard in a while.

-- Tier 2 --- Recommend all of them

The Melancholy of suzumiya Haruhi
Looking at this anime it looked like it would be really lame, however I am pleased to inform that it is actually really enjoying to watch. One of things I immediately noted was its main character is voiced by Crispin Freeman(Voice of ?Gannayev-of-Dreams? from NWN2 mask of the betrayer), his voice over adds much to the character, and makes the anime that much better. Furthermore the anime is actually really funny with one crazy thing happening after each other. The reason why I placed it as tier 2 is because the show takes a nose dive for the worse after about 7-8 episodes, because it wastes all the potential that it had on becoming an epic tale and instead just becomes about high school life instead of elevating the story above its original starting point like(Death note and code geass does). If you do watch it however I would also recommend that you go watch the movie(the disappearance of haruhi suzumiya) since it is everything that season 2 wasn?t.

Monster
I overall really liked this anime and all its very diverse and interesting characters, the only problem with this anime is that it is just a few 10-15 episodes too long for its own good, and as such drags its feet from time to time. However the best thing about this anime is its opening theme, I personally think I could listen to that theme all day long and not get tired of it. Furthermore the visual style and other music in the anime is also of a very good quality.

Spice and Wolf
When I started watching this I thought I was going to hate it, stupid furry fan service animes is not my cup of tea. However I was completely surprised at how much I actually enjoyed the anime itself. It?s one of those: What would happen if, stories; only in this case it is about a Man and a Pagan god traveling together. I love it when the characters act natural to how their background story/Nature is and doesn?t hold back just because it?s politically correct to do so( this is also why I love death note so much). Now everything good that can be said about season 1 is turned into something negative in season 2. The second season was un-describable in how bad it was, every minute of it was excruciating to watch. It was basically the poster child for how really really bad romance in anime is done. And I wouldn?t even force my worst enemy to watch it.

Phantom: Requiem for the phantom
After watching madoka magica I looked up the writer and saw he had also written this one, which instantly made me want to watch it. The story is really interesting; it takes you to a completely upside down world without becoming so unrealistic that you have to suspend your sense of disbelief. That is season 1 does this, season 2 not so much, for instance in season 2 the main character goes back to high school at the age of like 25-30 and a kid he met earlier comes a fully grown women in like 2 years, also in season 2 bullets stop killing people unless the plot says they can :(. So I would recommend that you watch the first ten episodes of this(since the story also have an ending here) and don?t bother with the rest.

--- Tier 3 --- Recommend somewhat, but don?t expect much

Claymore
A lot of animes from here and below could easily have been tier 1 material if they hadn?t wasted all their potential. Claymore is one of those, it?s a very cool setting with some interesting characters that are much more than just jaded zealots as it tries to portray them as. Only thing I disliked early on was the name of the claymores? power which is called Yogi and everytime I hear them say it I can?t stop thinking about yogi bear ><. There is also a stupid, really annoying kid luckily the story gets rid of him quickly and only uses him as a reward for the main character. That said even if I do like season 1, season 2 sucks a lot it?s some of the most dull anime I have watched, where an entire episode would be nothing but a really boring fight with monsters that had no weight in terms of the story.

Black lagoon
This anime I don?t understand, I don?t understand why I like it so much, there is little to no story and it?s filled with meaningless battles. I think I just find the cast of characters too enjoyable; the anime is true escapism and it romanticizes the pirate life a lot where by the end you?ll find yourself dreaming about living like that. I think it very much depends on the person whether they like this or not.

Fate/Stay night
This is one of those with a lot of wasted potential, it has one of the worst main characters that are more akin to a brick or a wood stomp meant to be dragged around, while awesome things happen. The plot is kinda stupid but it does it all with a straight face and as such you can?t fault it too much; it respects its characters and makes it so things that happen has consequences. I overall liked it but also annoyed it didn?t become what it could have been.

Darker than black
This anime is so silly that it is like the embodiment of silliness. The plot is that something happened, that made people gain xman like powers. However as a twist whenever they use these powers they have to do something silly, like smoking a cigarette or gargle water. People who have these powers lose all their emotions, and won?t shut up about how much they don?t care, about people they used to care about. Problem is it is inconsistent sometimes they have emotions and sometimes they don?t without any explains, other than that the power of emotions are so great that it defines plot points. Which kind of reminded me of a movie I truly hate: Wall-E where robots fall in love(Seriously how stupid is that). Anyway to sum up the anime; it?s a fine piece of entertainment which I am sure most would find enjoyable.

Elfen Lied
Great story; awful main character(the male), the good thing is the main character does get an explanation of why he is so tedious, but that does little since you are still force to keep watching him. Other than that, the only other problem is the constant display of naked children which becomes tedious very quickly. To me the anime is saved because I personally liked to see how the female character called lucy grew and developed throughout the story. Even though lot of the time you are stuck with an annoying version of her :/

Fate/Zero
Another anime written by the writer of madoka magica, it?s a prequel to Fate/Stay night but with an almost a completely new set of characters, the cast this time around is really good and it even has voice acting by Crispin Freeman :O. I have only watched 9 episodes so far since it is only now being English dubbed. But from what I have seen it is really great and I think I would move it to tier 2 once I saw the rest.

--- Tier 4 --- Recommend only if you really need an anime

Angel beats
This is one of those weird anime where all the characters are fun and exciting to watch but the rest sucks, the exact reason why I put it so low is because, its setting is so awful and meaningless that it feels almost pointless to watch. The basic story is that unhappy young people that have died, have had their souls trapped in purgatory which takes the form of a high school and are forced to stay there until they are happy and ready to move on to heaven(Pretty stupid right?). Thus the world they are in have no meaning to it and there are basically no consequences of failing, once you learn this then all excitement is taken out of the story and you are left with only the character stuff(which is good I?ll admit, but not good enough to carry the anime on its own).

Black butler
This anime is like the hybrid of two animes, one very serious and enjoyable and one that is completely obnoxious with ruined cartoonish anime drawing and really boring and tedious slapstick humor. I think I would like this one if not the parts I just described which is sad as the good parts are actually pretty good.

Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo
A very stylish anime, that does everything in its power to confuse you, for instance it is the year 5000 but Europeans(that are aristocrats of course) still drive around in horse-drawn carriage. Secondly the main character is more an observer of the story than a participant which makes his story arch rather meaningless in perspective to the overall plot. But the plot is actually fine I just wish that we could have seen it from the perspective of the count of monte cristo himself :/

Welcome to NHK
This is the latest one I watched, as I have watched some animes by now I was able to get a lot of the Meta humor that is presented in this anime. My problem with it is: it does all the things that it makes fun of other animes for doing(Girl randomly obsessed with main character). Which makes it somewhat of a hypocrite. A part from that I have only watched a few episodes of the second season but I can already feel how awful they are and I doubt I will be able to sit through them all.

--- Tier 5 --- Don?t recommend these but I didn?t straight up hate them

C ? Control
Imagine if you combined pokemon with wallstreet, you think that sounds stupid? Then you haven?t seen anything yet. This anime hurts my brain so much when watching it. The things you will hear is stuff like: Sell your stocks! Take out a loan! Or use your capital investment power; during really silly fight scenes. Luckily this world has two worlds: one normal world where things make sense and where you can appreciate what is happening and where things that occur have weight on the characters. And then the other world where the characters fight with pokemons(called their future(GET IT?? HAHAHA)) and must battle to destroy the future of other people, using economybabble(didn?t think this was a word but it is now) which I mentioned above. The good thing is this show only has 12 episodes so it never manages to be truly awful, but I don?t think I would recommend this one unless you are truly desperate.

Kaze no stigma
Sadness is the word I can best use to describe this one, it has a really awesome setting and some really well defined characters just waiting to be explored. However after watching the entire anime I was really sad as there is basically never once a meaningful plot, the anime consists of many meaningless plot after each other. There was only main plot throughout the entire thing which was really creepy: basically there are two main characters in the story( a boy and a girl). And the father to the girl desperately wants the boy to get into the panties of the girl, so that he will join his house since this boy is very powerful. So powerful in fact that nothing in the mini plots is ever at stake. All in all I almost put this on my dislike list but the characters were just enjoyable enough that I didn?t.

--- Tier SUCKS --- Animes I disliked

Ghost in the shell
Dull really really dull, I am the kind of guy that loves Star Trek(next gen in particular). But this anime just couldn?t keep me interested, I have heard people say it is visually impressive but that has practically no bearing on me and as such I was completely bored. There is basically no story to speak of and only vague hints of it, I gave up on the 6. episode since couldn?t keep the concentration anymore.

A certain magical Index
I saw someone call it ?A certain shitty anime?, and I very much believe it, when I first started watching it I was completely confused, people had crazy magic lighting powers, and the main character?s teacher is a beer drinking 12 year old girl which the students make sexual comments to. Only by searching the net did I find out that it was explained in the manga that the teacher had been part of an experiment to stop the aging process. It was also never explained why people with godlike powers were allowed to roam the street uncontrolled. I mean normally people like that have to hide their powers so that the government doesn?t find them, but in this world they just go to school like everyone else and occasionally destroy something when they get mad and what not. The other problem is the stories told have zero and I do mean zero weight nothing that happens ever amounts to anything. For instance the main character loses all his memory and you think ?hmm this could get interesting? but no instead he just acts like himself and it rarely comes up again and when it does it is only for laughs, like him meeting his parents for the first time. All in all this anime is really bad and shouldn?t waste your time with it.

Fullmetal alchemist/ FMA:brotherhood
Okay please someone explain why this is so good, everywhere I read it?s always like: FMA is amazing, you should watch FMA. I don?t get it first off the anime does that stupid thing with its drawings where it makes it all cartoonish. Secondly I watched about 6-7 episodes and I saw no plot and what I saw was some small pretty dull adventures, watching it reminded me a lot of pokemon and while I loved pokemon as a child I don?t think it would be very interesting now.

Gantz
I really don?t like this anime, all its characters fills me with hatred every moment they are on screen. Every scene is mercilessly drawn out and the plot moves at a snail?s paste. The anime itself panders heavily to a male anime watching audience to the point of disgust, for instance in the story this mysterious girl comes out of nowhere telling the male character she?ll do anything to help him and that she thinks people that are otaku(A word for people that like manga/anime) are the best thing ever. When he then replies well I?d like some sex then if you don?t mind, she proceed to have sex with him right there. This was also where I turned this shit off as I feared for the brain cells left in my brain. Maybe if this was a porno it would be fine, but for a serious story it?s embarrassing.

TL;DR: I am new to anime, anime is quite different from what you are used to, You should watch: Death Note, Code Geass, Steins; Gate and Madoka Magica. You should stay away from Gantz as it sucks hard.

PS: If anyone has any animes they can recommend based on my list I would be eternally thankful :)

That's actually a decent selection of shows for someone whose new to anime, and it doesn't include Cowboy Bebop or Gurren Lagann anywhere (not saying you should watch those, it's just that they ALWAYS come up whenever anyone asks for recommendations), though how anyone can say Fate/Zero is of similar quality to Fate/Stay Night is beyond me (even if you haven't finished watching it yet).

The two hits this season are Attack on Titan (pacing is really slow though) and Suisei no Gargantia, so you could do worse than giving those a shot.

HMMMM I tried watching Steins;Gate the other day stopped on episode 3 because it did in fact bore me.... Maybe I can bare a few episodes more. I have watched and love your other top picks so it might be worth it. Also most of your tier 4 has anime I liked more than the one before but tastes are different I suppose. (Angel Beats! and Gankutsuou in particular)

Attack on Titan/Shingeki no Kyojin is the obvious breakout of this year. Animation did throw me off first couple eps, but its actually beautiful with great characters and mythos going on.

I also started watch Future Dairy/Mirai Nikki, which is survival game where characters have different forms of dairies (usually from a cell phone ) that can tell future or have control over something. The point of the survival is to kill anybody eles who a future dairy to become a god of sorts.

Another older anime I always recommend(that you haven't mentioned) is Kino's Journey, Mai-Hime, Baccano!, and Ergo Proxy(although a lot a people think it's pretentious)

I've seen a number of anime with strong female characters. Hell, the majority of my favorite anime characters are female. Even if they're generally shown to being weaker than most men, I still usually find their character more interesting.

Yeah, I've seen that quite a number of times, and I too dislike it. I mostly see it pop up in harem and ecchi, which are genres I don't really like and tend to avoid, although there are a few exceptions.

I don't know, cheesy anime romance is my guilty pleasure, but I see where you're coming from. As for the kissing thing, a lot of Japanese tend see that as an act of public indecency.

I've seen a few good second seasons. Some I thought was even better than the first.

As for the anime you recommend (and don't recommend)

Death Note- This was the first anime that showed me that anime can be dark and not be action-heavy. Although I can see it's problems now I still enjoy it a lot.

Steins; Gate- Really enjoyed this one, too. Maybe not as much as everyone else, but I do love it.

Code Geass- I don't love this as much as I used to, but I still have fun with this.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica- Love Madoka. It's one of best anime I've seen in the last few years.

The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi- I enjoy this one enough to be called a big fan. Enjoyed the first season. Don't hate the second season as much as everyone else, because I can just skip Endless Eight. Loved the movie, and that was what propelled me into a fan.

Monster- In the middle of watching this, now, ad so far I'm enjoying it.

Spice and Wolf- Not really a fan, nor do I like it as much as everyone else. I didn't think it was bad, I just wasn't all that interested, as most of the anime was Lawrence talking about economics and trading, which I didn't find very interesting. Have yet to see the second season.

Phantom: Requiem for the phantom- Love Phantom. While it does have its rough moments, I thought it made up for it with all its other moments.

Claymore- Have yet to see this one.

Black lagoon- I still enjoy Black Lagoon. Maybe I don't love it as much as I used to, but I still have fun with it. Also, this is an example of a good second season.

Fate/Stay night- Don't really like this one. In fact I think it kinda sucks.

Darker than black- I liked it alright. Not as much as everyone else, though.

Elfen Lied- Yeah, I'm writing a review of this right now.

Fate/Zero- Loved it. This is what Fate/Stay Night should've been.

Angel beats- It was alright. The emotional scenes work, but it feels like half an anime.

Black butler- I had fun with this one. I don't really have much else to say about it, though.

Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo- Loved it, but it does have it's flaws. Albert is a bit of a wuss, and it kinda loses me towards the end.

Welcome to NHK- Loved it. I loved how disgusting and unlikable the main character was, and I enjoy black humor.

C - Control- Never really cared for it.

Kaze no stigma- Never seen it.

Ghost in the shell- Never really cared much for GitS. I've only seen the movie and I came out of it was a "meh" feeling.

A certain magical Index- I actually enjoyed this more than I thought I would. I thought the whole "science vs. magic" thing was interesting. I've only seen the first season, though, and it does end on a weak note. I'm in the middle of watching A Certain Scientific Railgun, now.

Fullmetal alchemist/ FMA:brotherhood- Love Fullmetal Alchemist, both the original and Brotherhood. The humor is a bit out of place and can get grating at times, but everything else I find enjoyable.

Gantz- Have never finished this. Maybe I will, but I don't know. I thought everyone in it outside of the girl and the mullet kid to be unlikable douchebags, and not in the good, interesting way like WttNHK.

As for my recommendations:
Kino's Journey
Baccano!!
Aoi Bungaku (A series of six short stories based on Japanese literature. Although they may vary in quality, I still find them all very interesting.)
Any Satoshi Kon film (Perfect Blue, Millenium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, Paprika)
Gurren Lagann (If you simply want crazy over-the-top fun and not gonna be a cynical asshole about it.)
Clannad (From the same creators of Angel Beats but better. It's slice of life, so don't go in expecting plot. Although, it does have that anime romance you hate so much, so I don't know, watch at your own risk.)
Mushi-shi
Evangelion (Just for the sake of trying it. I can't guarantee that you'll like it, though.)
FLCL
Nichijou (If you're looking for a weird little comedy)

I see what you mean but what I meant was that while intent is fine and understandable the phrase sounds out of place. I mean normally you'll hear something like "I love you i wanna be with you forever", but what is said in most anime is:
"I promise that i will forever protect you" and that is to be taken as a true love statement... i dunno maybe its just me but it feels weird when put like that.

Lol yeah, only seen a few episodes of Shiki but I was actually happy when she died; damn she was annoying. Which is problematic since the story expected you to feel sorry for her.

The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi- I enjoy this one enough to be called a big fan. Enjoyed the first season. Don't hate the second season as much as everyone else, because I can just skip Endless Eight. Loved the movie, and that was what propelled me into a fan.
Yeah I didn't hate the second season(except for Endless Eight) but I just thought the show could have been so much more.

Spice and Wolf- Not really a fan, nor do I like it as much as everyone else. I didn't think it was bad, I just wasn't all that interested, as most of the anime was Lawrence talking about economics and trading, which I didn't find very interesting. Have yet to see the second season.
If you like anime romance you will love second season, I personally found the economy and trading quite entertaining, since you realize just how difficult trading is back in a time where people could easily rob you while you traveled from town to town. Now if any of it is true I don't know.

I suggest... not watching dubs :p

Surprised you didn't like Angel Beats. I really loved it to pieces. It has problems for sure, but I quite liked it.
Though, maybe it was the dubs. I have the BD of it and the English in Angel Beats is 100% buttclench terrible to me. The tone of everything is just wrong all the time. It basically ruined the whole show IMO.

Protecting = Love
For some odd reason instead of characters saving I love you, instead they?ll say something like I promise to protect you. My guess is this is something is lost in translation or maybe Japanese people really value protection.
I've noticed, and it has been mentioned, that Japanese speech tends to talk around things that we would just state. In specific reference to "I love you", About.com my highly scholarly research indicates that's a phrase the Japanese particularly tend to talk around.

The product of a country with a couple fewer decades of feminism than the West.

Meanwhile, the percentage of female characters in anime climbs ever closer to 100%.

Anime people and real people
In anime the main characters are often distinguished by having crazy hair style/color and/or crazy personalities. Other people in the story acts like this is perfectly normal, the better animes don?t do this as much but they are all guilty of it.
Also, the sky is blue.

Insane hairstyles reached their peak in the 90's and have been in decline ever since. While colored hair and such will always be a part of anime - such as the Color-Coded For Your Convenience girls of Madoka Magica - the trend nowadays is to go for a more realistic look of blacks and browns, plus usually one blonde. That's still pretty much a rainbow compared to natural Japanese hair, of course...

mrhateful said:
Main characters are often underdeveloped
Some of the animes which has potential to be truly great wastes it all by having really dull one-dimensional main characters that has one wish and then does everything in his/her power to fulfill that wish, as such the story finds contrived ways for the character to get involved in the main plot and this often take you out of the experience.
I've noticed this tendency as well, and I'd go further as well. There is often a distinction between the "protagonist" and the "main character". You could phrase this in different ways, such as there being a "protagonist" and a "key character" or, perhaps a bit more accurately, a "narrator" and a "main character". The viewer's experience is filtered through the perceptions of this narrator, but the story isn't really about the narrator, it's about some other character. Haruhi Suzumiya would be an excellent example of this, where Kyon narrates but the true actor is, of course, Haruhi (that's one of the points of the Disappearance movie).

I think this may have to do with the prevalence of visual novels as a story-telling medium, where the player makes choices for the main character, forcibly putting the focus on the other characters and leaving the protagonist a personality-less husk.

There's also flat characters, like the main characters of shounen series, but they often have more layers than it feels like they do.

Most romance in anime is awful and often feels robotic
Fixed =D. Being srs again, though, this may be related to the previous point. If you want to see the ultimate in mechanical romances, watch Sword Art Online, a very, very polarizing anime from last year.

Season 2 Sucks
Very rarely is the second season of any anime good, for some it is but mostly it is like someone bludgeoned the writers in the head just before they started writing the second season. As such some of the recommendations I am going to make will specifically only be about the first season.
It's like the opposite problem American TV has. There are at least a couple series with good second seasons. I'll mention one of them later on.

I'm the same, although I think it doesn't bother me quite as much as it does you. You'll be glad to know contemporary anime is trending away from that kind of cutaway gag.

I finished this anime and loved it. Loved it. Then JesuOtaku explained in a tweet why she didn't like it. I thought about it for a while...and realized she was right. Shit. I still like, obviously, but thinking about it now actually causes pain in my chest.

It's simple, actually. When Lelouch wins, he loses and when Lelouch loses, he wins. And those mech battles are not boring, although obviously they aren't as interesting as the emotional scenes or plot twists, because that's how stories work.

Madoka <3333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333333 Seriously, PMMM is pretty much the only anime where I'm like, "This anime is awesome, no reservations. Dissenting opinions will not be tolerated."

And yes, the music is excellent. It's by Yuki Kajiura, who has also done the music for Fate/Zero, Sword Art Online, and (what I think is her best work) Kara no Kyoukai: The Garden of Sinners.

Well, you haven't watched much anime, that's why it felt dull. Doubly so because you're mostly looking for character pieces. Claymore's a strong action series with some really great designs for the Awakened Beings. Also, most of the characters are girls who aren't there for fanservice, which is pretty much the shortcut straight to my heart.

Fate/stay night is an anime adaptation of a visual novel of the same name, which is much better...is what most people will tell you. They are wrong. Fate/stay night the visual novel is a I-don't-know-how-many-dozen hour slog comparable to have screws driven into your skull with a handheld screwdriver. Fuck you Type-Moon for making it and fuck you for making me like it.

Hey, speaking of shows with terrible second seasons...have you seen Darker than Black: Gemini of the Meteor?

Great story; awful main character(the male), the good thing is the main character does get an explanation of why he is so tedious, but that does little since you are still force to keep watching him. Other than that, the only other problem is the constant display of naked children which becomes tedious very quickly. To me the anime is saved because I personally liked to see how the female character called lucy grew and developed throughout the story. Even though lot of the time you are stuck with an annoying version of her :/
I should have finished this show. I was most of the way through and I should have just pushed through and seen the whole thing. Elfen Lied is the shittiest piece of shit ever shit out by a fucking fuck fuck fuck and there are lots of people who hate it like me but they hate it because it has gore and torture and nudity and that's not why I hate it I like all those things I hate it because it's dumb and boring and boring and dumb and FUCK!

Aw yeah, Fate/Zero. My introduction to the Fate franchise. Some forewarning for you, the ending is terrible, because it has to set up for Fate/stay night (specifically, it has to set up for all three different routes (that is, three separate stories) of the F/SN visual novel).

I've only heard the trailer for the F/Z dub, and I try (and fail) not to be the kind of person who spews vitriol about dubs, but I am...concerned...about their ability to portray Gilgamesh properly. In F/SN it didn't really matter because he had basically no character and was just an asshole because F/SN sucks, but F/Z has to add just the slightest sympathetic note, shade in a sense of justification for his arrogance. If the dub pulls it off, then my hat is off to them, but I don't think Aniplex is up to the task of that.

P.S. Gen Urobuchi, who wrote Madoka Magica, also wrote this (rather, he wrote the novels this anime is adapted from).

C - Control could have been an amazing over-the-top battle anime, which based on your reactions to various shows here is something that doesn't appeal to you very much. Also, the series had one of the worst and most nonsensical plot resolutions I've ever seen. And I've watched Evangelion and RahXephon.

Yeah, there's something appealing about this show, not quite sure what it was. Each arc was worse than the previous one, but the main character being basically the most powerful person in the world was actually handled pretty well and was kind of interesting.

Okay, including me, the number of people who dislike Ghost in the Shell is now: 2.

I have not seen this show, but I have seen A Certain Scientific Railgun, which is like a sister series to Index, but as far as I can tell...is worse. However, it has a second season which is airing right now, called A Certain Scientific Railgun S, and it is amazing. Seriously, it blew my mind.

...this *shot*

Being more serious, your tastes seem to be pretty similar to mine, but you prefer things that stick closer to reality. Let's see, I would suggest:

Baccano!: You will love this show.

Trigun: Has a slow, comedic start which transitions into a very interesting series.

Kokoro Connect: This is the show that got me to broaden my horizons. It's more than a little rough around the edges, but the emotional component is very strong.

Mirai Nikki (AKA "The Future Diary"): You may find the main character and/or the humor grating, but this is a well-made suspense/horror show and the titular future diaries are used quite well.

Neon Genesis Evangelion: I can't guarantee you'll like it, but it's one of the most legendary anime and it might give you insight into some anime tropes. You'll also get to see the originator of the character archetype for Nagato (Haruhi) and Yin (Darker than Black). Evangelion is made up of a 26-episode series plus a movie, The End of Evangelion, which serves as a complementary ending to the series. You are free to replace the original ending with it, ignore it, consider the two endings complementary, or tear out your eyes in horror at it, as you prefer.

Gurren Lagann: Not sure if this is to your taste, but I really liked it, so you might, too.

All those have dubs, by the way, except for Kokoro Connect.

Anyone fairly well versed in anime should watch Evangelion. But you need to understand that a portion of it is satire and it takes character relationships and psychology somewhat realistically. People don't just shrug off horrible things that happen to them, they tend to be marked and changed forever by them.

Black Lagoon, I can't explain why I like this one so much either. I have a taste for the over the top action scene, but it's nice to find a show with a decidedly more adult attitude about them, as in they're kind of gruesome but not in the high pressure blood style where characters seem to have a water main instead of a heart. Also, decent characters keep things moving and there aren't a lot of dull moments. It's like the anime equivalent of an R rated action movie.

Spice and Wolf. This is a drum that I can't beat enough. Drama with little actual violence. Characters with truly great writing behind them. They go from genuinely funny to charming to aww, usually courtesy of Holo's(Horo's?) expressive ears. Also, the dub has her voiced by the same voice actress as Mad Moxxie from Borderlands, and I love that voice.

For all sake of decency and self respect, I can't honestly recommend Panty and Stocking as a good show... what it is is a crass somewhat parody a lot of things drawn in a powerpuff girls-esk style. Also made by Gainax like NGE and FLCL(a show I've got to watch)

Samurai Champloo. What Cowboy Bebop did with Jazz, Samurai Champloo does with hip hop... in feudal Japan. Doesn't make a lot of sense, but let's just go by what TVTropes calls it, Anachronism Stew. Great episodic action show while it lasts.

He he.. eh.. I .. erm.. I actually kinda liked it, it felt like there was way more weight to how the world was, it wasn't as colorful as the first season.

For instance during the show you meet a young man(going by big he is drawn) who upon seeing the girl character(a kid) instantly falls in love with her. Now when i watched this I was pretty creeped out however, you then learn the background of this boy that his mother had turned into a Contractor, where upon she had left their home and had no wish for ever seeing them. His father had gone somewhat crazy and started dressing in drag acting as the boys mother, and all the boy wished for was his mother to return. The boy was probably mentally scarred seeing his father going through all that.

Same goes Huang you learn why he has such contempt for contractors as he was tricked to loving one of them.

Its very sad just thinking about it but at the same time it shows that a contractor is not just getting cool x-man like powers but that it also has a rather huge impact on the people closest to them. For me it put the show in completely different light.

If you're talking about Megumi, I think that was the point of her character, and it wasn't that the story expects you to feel sorry for her and more that she views herself to be the victim, when she really isn't, which a lot of characters like her seem to think about themselves. In fact quite a few of the characters in Shiki are pretty unlikable.

I was more so talking about their hairstyles. For a dark, violent horror anime, it has some of the dumbest hairstyles I've seen since Yugioh, and can be really distracting.

I don't remember much from the original anime, but I loved it as a kid. If you're watching Brotherhood, though, then yes it gets better, and it does have a plot. The humor's still a mixed bag, but if you can get passed that then you may enjoy it.

I can already tell you and I have very different taste in anime.

My first and foremost requirement for me to watch an anime is it has to be a comedy. I don't give a damn if the jokes are so bad they're actually funny or they are actually funny, it just has to make me laugh once within three episodes for me to continue watching it. Note: The next section would be romance, but most comedy anime is usually in a highschool filled with the awkward love scenes you dislike, don't worry they annoy me too but I'm used to them. I don't know if Harem is considered romance, but it usually leads to some funny moments, so throw it on in the pile too.

The next requirement is optional, but can really increase my interest, Action. Action has made Infinite Stratos, Date A Live, and Is This A Zombie?, so much more enjoyable for me. The action actually made IS good, if you can get past the most generic accents for british, german, and french people in anime history, it would be really boring without it. The humor fell flat 95% of the time and the harem aspect was really forced.

So I have two types of anime:
1. Comedy/Romance: Oreimo, Haganai, and Seitokai Yakuindomo
2. Comedy/Action/Romance: Highschool DxD, Heaven's Lost Property, Roasario+Vampire, The Devil is a Part Timer!, and The Familiar of Zero.

When you're inevitable depressed / abhorred by the ending, I highly recommend FLCL and Gurren Lagann.

Both made by the same people, but essentially manufactured specifically to invoke the opposite feelings that EVA is meant to invoke. IE Hope and Spirit.

and in my opinion, GL and FLCL are vastly superior to EVA, and in fact among my favorite anime.

Personally I adore Fullmetal alchemist Brotherhood, I think it a very great show. That said, the first few episode are bad, mainly the problem with them is they are slow and boring and do not advance the plot enough. You also mention ghost in the shell Standalone complex which I agree has bad starting few episodes. This is quiet common in Anime, added that to list of common thing about anime, the first few episode are often bad. Most of the best shows have amazing starts some, however, do not and often pick off latter on for example stein;gate you get through the first few episode and it become amazing.

Another thing about how the animation style sudden switches to a more cartoonish drawing style that very common in anime so you probably get used as it mainly done in shows with much lower budgets or where the anime is a comedy. This also means that when it does switches to cartoonish style than it implying that you the audience should laugh. Not all anime do this most of the ones you listed do not as you listed all the serious anime that have come out in recent years. Also be warn you been watching some of the "best shows" meaning they often more serious and if you do watch other type of shows besides the one you mention be prepare for the following, weird transition to cartoonish style, FanService, MOE and badly integrated CG (basically the dragon from fate/stay night).

Do you only watch dub or do you also watch sub as that would help a lot in recommending anime?

That said I recommend you watch Bacanno! it has an amazing dub and a very good story. It also starts out strong which appear to be important to you and has a decent ending.

Also I think you should watch Full Metal Panic it a very good show with good production value and is mash every genre and surprisingly works. It also has a very good romance story in it second season (second raid I don't count Fumoffu as that does not continue the plot at all but is awesome and you totally watch it)

You should watch Gurren Lagann (full title Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann) if you watch this my advice is it pretty different from most of what you said you watch as it is very childish and over top but it probably help you to understand some thing in anime later on.

Lastly CowBoy Bebop It has a pretty bad start and if stick with it to episode 4 ballads of Fallen angles the show become really good afterwards.

NOTE: all the anime I listed have dub

Ghost in the shell

Fullmetal alchemist/ FMA:brotherhood
Whilst I see where you're coming from in Ghost in the Shell being a bit dull (I rank it 4th in my top 10, but acknowledge it's not for everyone), I was surprised to see FMA in your not to recommend list. You mentioned both the original and Brotherhood so I dunno which you are referring to when you say you watched 6 episodes, but at least in the case of Brotherhood, the pace is a lot quicker and the plot easier to digest if you felt that it was getting dull. It shares a similarity with Pokemon in that it's in part a journey on foot across a land, but that's where the similarities end as the story of FullMetal Alchemist is a lot more epic in proportions, and in my opinion very well paced and well written.

I don't want to force my opinion onto you, but I would say that if you were finding it dull, then give Brotherhood a go first, and if you have time watch up to episode 15 - 16 before dropping it, it's where I believe the story really gets into the swing of things.
