First Look at Three Years' Changes in Legend of Korra Book 4

Republic City is getting along well after three years, a Legend of Korra Book 4 clip previews.

The final season of Legend of Korra [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/legend%20of%20korra] is nearly here, and a look at the opening two minutes shows some changes from the end of Book 3 - mainly, what's changed in three years.

Nick released a trailer over the weekend [http://www.nick.com/videos/clip/korra-book-4-trailer-89471257.html], confirming that book 4 takes place three years later, with a focus on the Earth Kingdom, as Kuvira threatens peace with a military force.

The opening sequence of the first episode [http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/09/29/the-legend-of-korra-exclusive-clip-watch-the-opening-sequence-from-book-four?utm_campaign=ign+main+twitter&utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social], reportedly titled "After All These Years," briefly shows Republic City three years later. A park honors Korra's bravery and sacrifice, and meanwhile Asami has spearheaded the redevelopment of its rail system, which now extends to the Earth Kingdom.

The trailer shows a shorter-haired Korra, Tenzin's kids grown up a bit more, a militaristic Kuvira, and a surprised Korra as she appears to have found Toph, who has been missing ever since she left the metal clan to go on a journey.

A previous clip of book 4 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/137474-Nickelodeon-Legend-of-Korra-Book-4-Clip] showed Korra in a wheelchair preparing to head home to the Southern Water Tribe for her recovery after her near death in Book 3. Korra seems to be doing fine physically after three years and is back into bending action.

Legend of Korra Book 4: Balance premieres October 3, Nick.com. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/137369-Legend-of-Korra-Book-4-October-3-Premiere-Date]

Looks like the Earth-Kingdom's going to war with new mecha-tanks. You can even see Zhu Li in one, near the end. Season 3 was a massive step-up and I can't wait to see what happens next.

Season one was good until the last 10 minutes. Season two was a mixed bag. But Season 3 was great all the way through. it's gonna suck that the franchise is likely over after these last episodes come out.

it was great while it lasted I suppose

First they rush season 3 out the door: showing half the episodes in two weeks before moving the rest of them online. Are they trying to speed up the broadcast of season 4 so they can book end it with season three on Nicktoons as soon as it's finished? I mean it's not like they need to clear space on their website is it? This isn't even Firefly type sabotage, just to make the previous board of directors look bad, since they're hardly afraid of promoting the show. And still dodging the consequences of the rejoining of the spirit and human worlds it seems, unless that has something to with Toph's return.
The thing that continues to confuse me is if Korra had her connection to her past lives severed how exactly did she enter the Avatar State at the end of last season.

OT:
I have disliked the majority of LoK. I have found the story underwhelming and I dislike most of the characters but to my great surprise I did find myself enjoying the last few episodes of S3 so I will give S4 a go. I will not however give it as long as I gave 3 to get good. If I am completly honest it is mainly the promis of seeing Toph that has me wanting to watch.

If I'm not mistaken, the Avatar State was based on both the connection to the past lives and Rava, with Rava acting as the source of power, while the past avatars "shared" "their" experiences.

Korra was able to enter the Avatar state at will after the end of book 1. It's worth noting that all of the "fully realized" Avatars have had this ability in the past. Aang, Roku, and I believe Kioshi demonstrated the ability to go in and out of the Avatar state at will. As for how she's able to do it will the connection to the past Avatars severed, probably the same way Wan was able to do it as the first Avatar.

I really liked the first season but I didn't like the last couple of scenes in it. It SHOULD have ended with Korra stuck as just an Airbender, with Book 2 (having to do with the Spirit-world) focusing on her spiritual journey to restore her powers. I actually liked how Book 2 ended as well, being rather open-ended and optimistic, so I think that would've been a fine stopping point. However, I think Book 3 picked things up a lot and was pretty good, so maybe Book 4 will also end up being a good season.

Because Avatar State has nothing to do with past lives, its about the connection with Rava. Hence the term avatar. The ability to revisit old lives is a useful side effect of the reincarnation, not the cause. Wan was able to enter his own Avatar State despite having no past lives to draw from at all, why wouldn't Korra be able to after the cycle got broken?

Anyway, whoo yeah only a few more days!

I will be honest here. I found S2 so boring that I remember very little about it. I was going off what Roku said in TLA that the Avatar state is where all the previous avatars pool all there knowledge and experience and lend it to the current Avatar. If it was explained better in S2 then fine, I am happy to take your word for it.

The Avatar state is not connected by past/future Avatars.
The force of light within each Avatar, is passed down to the next Avatar through the act of reincarnation. All that happened, is that the Avatar cycle was broken, and was started anew at the end of Season 2. The only way for the Avatar state to be broken forever, is should Raava be permanently separated from the Avatar.

Looks good. Can't wait.

I hope that Kuvira and her faction are a bit more complicated than it's being suggested, but judging by that prince, I believe she and her followers aren't going to be happy to have another weakling on the throne and thus they feel they'll do a better job. Korra's going to step in and try to keep the peace, like the Avatar should, but she's going to fail and really feel like she doesn't have a purpose anymore. Thus, she goes to look for Toph, the only Earth bender Kuvira will likely listen to.
At least that's what I'm betting happens. Looking forward to it.

This might be because I've read the other topics on these videos but I'm REALLY hoping that they aren't gonna do another love triangle with Mako. Because the last few moments of that opening scene really feels like Asami and Mako got back together. Or that Asami and Mako are back together because it would feel weird after they established in both the second and third season that that was over. Also because just once I'd like to see a series in which it DOESN'T try to hook up the characters in the end.

But so far, everything looks great. Though I suspect that there will be plenty of flashbacks given the number of scenes that show Korra before she cut her hair.

Just chalk it up to her being an Avatar prodigy (can't waste any time teaching her how to bend other elements, because she has to be different from Aang. Except Air Bending of course, because again, she's different from Aang). Remember the avatar state was supposed to be a last resort in the first series, yet she could enter it at will to cheat in an airbending race in the Season 2 premier. Or maybe that is one of the consequences of reconnecting the spirit and human worlds. I don't recall any explanation given in the show.

I think the prospect of seeing Toph again is the main reason everyone wants to see Season 4. It should be better written than 3 since this is the Last season so they don't need to hold back anything now.
Um... No. The Avatar State was never a last resort. Even in Season Two of TLA it was obvious that all previous avatars could enter Avatar State at will. Hell, there are even two ways to enter Avatar State.

A sustained state like we saw Aang use when he fought the Fire Lord. It grants incredible power without limit, but also leaves the Avatar Cycle much more vulnerable.

The other is to "hold a charge". You'll notice their eyes flash for a moment before they execute an incredibly powerful act of bending. Kyoshi did that when she split off from the main land and Aang did it to put out the flames after his battle with Ozai.

Honestly, if anything Korra is less capable of using the Avatar State than other avatars as I have yet to see her use the Charge Method. And she never entered the Avatar State out of anger, fear, or her life being endangered.

To become a Fully Realized Avatar, you have to master all four elements and be able to control the Avatar State (hence why the final episode of TLA is titled Avatar Aang). It's even stated that mastering the Avatar State was very difficult for Roku and it took the majority of his training to accomplish that. Once the Avatar masters the state they can enter it at will, but it is still dangerous.

Beyond that, Season Two of Korra made it pretty obvious that Raava was the source of the Avatar State and power. We saw Wan perform incredible feats of bending far beyond what he previously demonstrated once they were fused. Raava connects all the Avatars together. This allows the Avatar to speak to his/her past lives and in the Avatar State to use their skills, even if the Avatar itself hasn't learned them.
