My first online games were Quake 1 and Jazz Jackrabbit 2, around 1998. This was on a 56K modem so Quake didn't run all that fast, but Jazz Jackrabbit was the bomb!
Jazz Jackrabbit? Online? Oh God did I miss out...
Actually there is still a vibrant community around the game (which is also available for Mac!) at Jazz2Online [http://www.jazz2online.com/J2Ov2/]. The game is far from dead :)

Hmm. I know i played the original Doom and Warcraft: Orcs vs Humans over dial up modem. The first game I played against strangers online was either Quake or Rise of the Triads.

My connection speed was a 1200 modem which connected to a local BBS via the telephone.

I played Doom against my brother through its LAN feature, but for an actual online match it would be C&C: Red Alert.

Second Life was the first "playable" computer game/program I ever had on my computer.
If you're talking game games then Ragnarok Online which came shortly after SL.

Now a days I play World of Warcraft.
