Spurred on by the "germany"-thread, I had my magnificent mind get to work on which other country would lend itself to an entertaining thread, and then I remembered: I am on the internet. There is no country the internet is as obsessed with as Japan.
I would make quips and jokes about Japan, but that would only taint your reaction, which is why I have a spoiler further down for those interested in the mindless, potentially offensive ramblings of a mad mad manatee.
So, tell me, what is the first thing you think of upon hearing "Japan"?
Just "Japan".

Go.

The first thing I thought of was "weird". Then I went a step further and remembered that Japan took a look at the "weird" side, started screaming incoherently and ran through the concept of weirdity itself and into the abyss of insanity that lies beyond, whilst cross-dressing, wearing underwear on it's head and dragging gummy tentacles along, to a place filled with images depicting unspeakable things being done to underage girls with insane proportions by innocent sea-life, myths and legends that are even more insane than their tentacle fetish.

Right now, since I'm seeking overseas teaching work, the first thought I have is "can't read the bloody writing!"

I imagined a drawing of a businessman in his forties walking among the cherry blossom petals. Then I thought of a manga schoolgirl.

Most of the "weird" stuff that the internet tells you about it is either completely false, or incredibly overblown.
True that. You know all those wacky gameshows everyone knows about? First of all, they're not as common as people think, and secondly, the reason they get viewers is because Japanese people think those shows are extremely weird, too. It's not like Japanese people watch those shows when they want to see something normal.

just for fun...

is there a difference between weaboo and otaku?
Otakus love what they love and don't give a damn. Weeaboos feel the burning need to justify their every stance.

OT: Metallurgy, entomology, Japanese gardens, tea ceremonies & Kobe.

That's what I think of upon hearing the word 'Japan'.

...

Nnnn-ja... -_-

huh...an interesting distinction

I'm not hugley into anime but If I were I don't think I'd call myself an Otaku due to the negative conotations of the word in japan...but then I guess when we use it its not the same word...and when I think about it in the context of japan I could be called an Otaku mabye...

Alcoholism, sushi and Battle Royale. Also everything is tinted pink when I think about Japan.

Then I think about manga, but quickly stop myself because I don't like manga.

Sushi is the first thing that poppes up in my mind. Stereotypical, I know, but goddamn I love sushi.

And after that comes anime, manga, Japanese culture and history, weird Japan stuff etc.
