So, GoG lured me in with Deus Ex for $10, so I bought it up. I'm installing it now.

However, I've never played it before. Is there anything I should take into account while playing it?

Yes. The game will dump you right into a mission at the statue of Liberty. You will be confused and frustrated and bored. If you get yourself to finish the mission, it'll get better

Liberty Island is actually a really fun mission when you replay, but it's very daunting the first time. The game doesn't really give you any guidance, and you're extremely incompetent at combat. However, there's really no way to blow the mission (unless you die of course), so just play it however feels right and tough it out.

The game gets way more enjoyable once you understand how everything works, but that'll take some time.

Treat the first mission as a stealth mission and use your stun prod and baton.

The tranq-crossbow causes enemies to run about 30m while hiccuping before falling over usually setting off alarms in the process.

The sniper rifle is useless until you have at least a couple of upgrades in rifles and the gunshot will set off alarms again as will the pistol.

Hacking turrets is good If you don't mind fatalities. I usually climbed up the back of the statue and cleared that place out but watch out for wall mines.

Save often to avoid ragequitting.

Otherwise it's a big level. Have fun exploring.

Sneak over mano-a-mano or heavy weaponry.
Try to finish this game without killing anyone. IT CAN BE DONE. It's fun ! :)

Play the tutorial first. Also endure during the first level on Liberty Island. The game starts out pretty ordinary, but then it starts to grow on you more and more. The characters and the story become less generic and more interesting than they first appeared.

Change the controls to a more up to date control scheme, ] for reload is slightly weird.

The reticle starts off big and goes into the middle, that's how accurate you are (getting more accurate when still). Don't try and run and gun the first level as you're not prepared at all for it stats-wise.

Look around for ways to get into the statue if one isn't working for you, there are a fair few.

Quicksave quicksave quicksave. There is no autosave at all, not even between levels, so forgetting to save can be really, really rage-inducing.

Remember enemies have a pretty limited field-of-view, so you can hide in places you wouldn't think it's possible to hide.

Endure the first level at Liberty island. It is pretty much the worst part of the entire game. Everything afterwards gets much better. ^_^

This. We've become so accustomed to checkpoints and auto saving that I was quite thrown when I died and got kicked right back to the start, and I've played it before.

I actually like Liberty Island a lot. It's a great example of how wide open some of the stages can be.

Gimme the GEP gun.

I mean...

Give JC the GEP gun.

Anyways, I'd suggest taking the leg augment that speeds you up rather than the one that lets you run silently, since crouching and moving renders you silent anyway.

Just crouch, activate speed boost, and zip around super stealthy like.

Oh, and if an NPC asks for a gun, drop the one you're using and find them some generic one to use, since you'll be modding your guns and won't want to lose them.

And Men in Black/Women in Black explode when you kill them. Knock them out with a baton sneak attack or cattle prod and they won't. Plus you can loot them.

Search every nook and cranny for secrets and loot. Hack everything for door codes and what not. Explore the vents.

Stealth pistol is pretty handy.

Blind people with your flashlight eyes.

Tranquilizer darts are a bit... odd. You'll see what I mean.

Drink lots of booze.

Watch out for A BOMB!

The UNATCO Headquarters is on Liberty Island. As for why you were dropped at the pier and not deployed from the base, don't bother asking.

Whatever you do, don't rush the game. Take your time to explore and talk to NPCs.

I found the game engaging and incredibly fun the minute I booted it up. So no. Just remember to play the tutorial.

For sake of reference, I first played said game last summer. So this isn't a nostalgia thingie. ^_^

Turn the sound off while in Hong Kong. The voice acting is terrible, and that damn song will become stuck in your head FOREVER.

If it feels a bit stale at first, try and endure it for a couple of more hours, it gets better. I was damn close to putting it down at first, but then I got used to it pretty quickly and ended up loving it.

Apparently the original Deus Ex was an actual RPG, and not just a stealth game pretending to give you choice.
If that is the case, don't go stealth because it's a fun-killer.
