Worst part? Initially, Flashlight is mapped to F12.

I bought it on Steam.
I had no problem with that. It was the other ones. I'd be trying to turn on bullet resistance and stand there like a lemon while sending out my spy drone. Got on my nerves.
On Steam, F12 takes a screenshot :p
oh shit, has it been that long since I played it? I was going to post how I was going to be the guy that re-installs the game because I never finished it before, and then I saw your post. The last time I played Deus Ex, Steam had not implemented the screen shot system yet. Fuuuuuuuuuuu.........

*reinstalls deus ex"
what everyone else said
and after you did liberty and something really bothers you check if there is a mod to remedy that.
also: you can headshot people with the tranq crossbow (but not sure if it is one of the mods i use that makes it so)

For anyone else, too- Take the GEP gun. Just- just go ahead and do that. Thing'll save your ass, I promise. And it makes a good lockpick.

Even without training, most enemies have a place that they can be incapacitated immediately with the charge prod. It's the back of the neck for most people.
Except for the bionic commandos. [sub]Friggin' hate those guys![/sub]
Actually, there is a seam in their armor on their back near their waist line. It can be used to stun them.

Quicksave OFTEN.

Until you get good guns and good skills to make them useful, try to ambush enemies whenever possible.

If at all possible, get the enemy one on one, and take them out before anyone can raise an alarm.

Explore. There are lots of hidden goodies everywhere.

And lastly, I hope you enjoy the game. It's a bit clunky, but it's a must play.

Have exorbitant amounts of patience. Speaking as someone who otherwise rarely has any problem adjusting to older games, it really hasn't aged well. At all.

Generally, it's best to shoot your way through your first time. This way, you'll be able to explore and learn the levels more freely which can help you on future stealth runs, should you choose to attempt it. There are a few ways this can be made considerably easier.

First, as others have said, pick the GEP gun. It is supremely useful, and ammo is not as scarce as you would think. Even after aquiring other tools, the GEP is the best tool for taking out large robots.

Second, on the far side of Liberty Island is a small bunker. On the other side of an electricity field you'll find a laser sight. Attach it to your pistol, and you no longer need to put any points into pistols to kick ass. Note: do not attach a scope to your pistol! A bug will screw up the laser sight.

Lastly, upgrade your rifle to master. While some would say it's pointless if you're good with pistols, which take up far less inventory space, this is not true. The shotgun really helps with those annoying spider bots. At master, you can take out almost any enemy, including commandos, in one shot with a silenced sniper rifle. Also, and perhaps most importantly, the sniper sifle will be able to destroy cameras, turrets, and even some doors in one shot as well, essentially giving you a silenced GEP gun.

When creating JC, drop Pistols down to Untrained to receive more points. When you start the game, Pistols will be bumped back up to Trained for free

Yes. The game will dump you right into a mission at the statue of Liberty. You will be confused and frustrated and bored. If you get yourself to finish the mission, it'll get better
Everyone is pretty much gonna say this. We all went through it; now you have to do it too. Honestly, when this game opens up, it becomes one of the best (if not, the best) games of all time from any genre.

The first time I ran through the game, I invested heavily in lockpicking and electronics. As it turns out, these skills all overlap heavily as one route that is closed by a hackable keypad can often be circumvented by lockpicking a grate on the other side of the room etc. And, in all honesty, there are so many lockpicks and multitools throughout the game, you never need to go above level 2 in lockpicking or electronics.

And just general playing advice, explore everywhere. Deus Ex's best aspect is its level design. Every time I play, I'll uncover a new little place that I didn't know existed. And each time I come across a new hidey-hole, there is always a little goody, be it a weapon mod/ammo/aug canister/etc. to reward my curiosity.
