Unless you've played games like Thief or Hitman, you are probably going to have some trouble with the first mission. You'll get used to how the game works and the fact that you have to out-smart enemies not challenge them to a bullet eating competition.

Also the 10mm Pistol is your best friend. Upgrade the heck out of it.

Theirs a useful little exploit that no one has mentioned so far. To avoid using more than one lock pick on difficult locks then simply start picking the lock and then open the menu and wait for about 10 seconds. Close the menu and the lock should be open using just the one pick. It's helpful as it will allow you to explore more of the game without using all your lock picks leaving you stuck later.
