I was thinking the other day about the very first time I got on the internet. My dad showed me some random website that would speak whatever you typed in, so he had typed this long paragraph ahead of time and posted it, so when I came in the room, the computer would start speaking directly to me, using my name and everything. I remember spending days upon days trying to understand how the computer knew me (which I ended up blaming on my Gameboy pocket because I remembered using my actual name on Pokemon and I just knew the two were connected).

So how about you guys? When was the first time you got on the internet and what did you do?

Huh. The first time I made contact with the internet was in the days before http:// took off. I was too young to understand (and remember) most of it, but my older brother was using it back then.

Well, very first contact was when me and my mom would play a Myst-style point-and-click game on a web page. I don't remember the name, though I do remember finding a key in a skeleton, and a distinct link to Roman architecture and history. And I remember watching the little "N" animation on Netscape running, heh.

I got shown a really old version of BBS by a cousin. It was dull and text.

I didn't see the "real" internet in 1995 when I used Yahoo to search for pictures of Elizabeth Anne Hilden who was a playboy bunny at the time and by strange coincidence, and I kid you not, there was a girl who lived along my road who was almost her spitting image.

ha, I remember back in 1997 or maybe 98, being in my high school library and hearing a student ask his teacher if he could use references from the internet for his paper and her reply was "you probably wont find anything on the internet, your best bet is to reference a book"

lol... crazy how the times have changed

It must of been Late 1998/Early 1999 when I first experienced the net on dial up.

I remember my mum having trouble in finding a web page to be our homepage.

I also remember that sweet, sweet dialling tone, and not being able to use the phone whilst on it.

Ahhhh...Memories!

when my family got internet I remember going onto Amazon.co.uk and Google search but what I remember best is the noise the dial-up internet made when it was put on.

The first website I remember was a wallpaper gallery for my desktop image. I'm not sure when exactly but the escapist was definitely one of my first sites.

I don't really remember the first time. My brother and I got our own (shared) computer in '98, but I'm sure I went on the internet before then. We used it mostly for looking up game strategies, hints, and cheats.

The earliest I can remember was probably when my mom got me a G-mail account (that is still my main because I was smart enough not to get it on every spam mail list there is). I got hooked almost instantly, I remember I then started playing games non-stop, stuff like Transport Tycoon, Sims, and flash games on sites like Addicting Games. Basically working myself up to the point where now I'm at heart a Battlefield and RPG PC gamer, to death (Nothing against consoles, they're fun and all, but I just love how much can be down with a PC). *sniff* memories. Oh yea, and I never would have become a brony without the internet to. seriously though, no hate, it's personal preference.

Defining the Internet broadly, ten years old and circa 1988, my best friend showed me Quantum Link [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_Link] on his Commodore 64. I don't remember any of the actual content, but the computer was talking to other computers via telephone and that was cool enough to stick with me.

I got actual internet access seven years later. I think I actually used the term "information superhighway" in my pitch to my parents... It was really all about the porn though.

How old were you for Alien Versus Predator to be suitable for you but you weren't old enough to know what the internet was, after google became a popular search engine. I assume you'd have to be pretty young, AVP is an awful movie.

O.T. I haven't got a clue. I don't ever remember being new to the internet.

I'm surprised how many people seem to be new to the internet. How can a website that was relatively unknown until 4 years ago be one of your first sites? Wow. What are you, 12?

It was about 1998 and my dad was getting all excited about this new website which found things for you on the internet.
I think it was called 'google,' but who can really remember these things.
