She isolated herself from everyone. That's why no one bothered to find out what happened to her. This has nothing to do with people "not giving a shit". Would you bother to check on a random person that, for all you know, is still alive?

Whoa, that's bleak. You're over reacting. So one case happened where a woman went an extremely long time before being found, but it's not usually the norm. They usually find the person after a day or two.

We don't know much about the woman either. She could have been secretive, private, or even a *****. If no one likes you, when you don't show up for something, they'll be happy rather then concerned.

I would say its too early to jump to conclusions.

If an 85-90 year old is still paying their bills, and had no rent to pay, there is no reason to suspect anything about them.

I do not know what the UK policy on taxing pensioners is... but this would never happen in america because the IRS would bust the door down long before five years came and went.

Note to self: make sure at least a couple of my bills are not autopaid when I become 85. Also make sure I retain an active social life.

And make enough money to take the vaccine for oldness when it is developed.

sidenote: every apartment on this floor could be full of dead people and i wouldn't know. i've met two.

Where was this? The states? I could belive that! No im just kidding. And I have no idea whether the world is becoming more of an asshole or not cuz I dont pay attention to the real world. I would think so cuz of how corupt my generation is. I hope that its not too late for the next generation. Seriously what is wrong with our sosiety? I have talked to my parents and grandparents about the respect and responsiblities they had as kids and I compare that to today. Back then if they swore EVER they got smacked across the face. Now its part of every kids vocab and most parents dont seem to care. Also there was no nonsence about drugs, sex and booze. Maybe ciggarettes but thats cuz they didn't know any better. Back in my grandparent's days people were frowned apon for having kids out of wed-lock. Now teens are having babies like there is no tomorow. Do u see what I mean? No people dont give a shit anymore. Its all about our own personal gain, fuck the person beside you they dont matter! You want what you want and you better have it now! You dont give a shit that some old lady died congrad-a-fucking-lations it happends every day, every hour, every minute, every second. We as a global population do not care about the millions who die every day cuz just as many are being born. Why morn people when you still have to keep breathing? Sure its sad if some 8 year old girl died, or your relatives. But what about other people? How many families are being torn apart by death? Like seriously? Do any of you really truely care? Sure it's sad someone died. But I dont know her. You dont know her. So what is the point of getting all worked up cuz some lady died. Im not crying right now, nor am I sad. I dont care cuz no one cared about her and her isolated life. So the point of this thred is to either morn some lady no one knows or complain about how life is right now. If you dont mind me Im going to get lost in either a movie, a video game or a book so Im not reminded about how fucked we are as a global population.
Amen.

Seriously our generation is screwed there is no turning back, but it's not a mistake since due to the earlier ways of life so this was bound to follow. I'm not so surprised that our teens and kids will probaly all get screwed up because it's the way it was going to happen i saw this years before anyone else did, our population is far from the turning back line eventually we all are going to have to except that the world is just screwed.

And to everyone out there please beat your kids not cause there brats but for there own good.

Doesn't it depend on the victim's lifestyle and social life? As said before, if she was very antisocial and went out of the house very little then people could easily not notice her missing.

To be fair, she was 90, and as far as I can tell from the article dead of natural causes.
It's not like someone shot her, or there was an uproar. They probably thought "she's an old person she wants to be left alone." And IDK about you, but I don't go to neighbors randomly, or people I met only once and ask how they're doing.
Would've been 90. I know what you're saying, perhaps she did want to just keep to herself but to be undiscovered for five years? Her opticians and the supermarket she used to go to just assumed she had gone to live in a home, assumed everything was alright. That's one of the things which caught me, everyone's all too ready to assume someone else has taken care of things. You just gotta think someone might've noticed something was amiss. Apparently not.

Answer to Q1: Not until the door was opened.
Answer to Q2: Yes.

Well glad this thread got some feedback. I will admit at the time of writing it I was just disgusted that something like this could happen to an old lady and wrote what was on my mind at the time without really thinking it through. I'm aware worse things happen all the time, my name may be SmartIdiot but I'm not completely fucking stupid or oblivious. It just strikes me how much people grow apart from one another. Perhaps she had no remaining relatives, perhaps she was a secretive person and with the convenience of being able to take care of cash transactions via direct debit I guess there was no reason to think that something was wrong.

However the thing that really pissed me off about it was that many people, as I mentioned before, just assumed that she had been taken care of. Someone else deals with it. I'm not pointing the finger at anyone, I just think five years is a long time to lay undiscovered. Do you think the people living next door or below would've thought for one second over... say... five christmas seasons that there might be a dead body next door/upstairs? And that it has been there for years? Of course not, no one in their right mind would think that. But it was there.
