First, Do you actually need the skills of an electrical engineer to do this, or will a basic knowledge of screws and glue suffice?
Second, How permanent is your permanent, meaning when did you fix the xBoxes that they are still working?

How do I tell what my error code it is?
Turn your 360 on. It'll come up with a black screen and a load of writing in different languages. Look at the bottom of the screen, and there should be a box with a code in it, like 'E74' and 'E68'.

Well, when my friend got red ringed while we were playing Halo, he screamed "NOOOOOOOO!!!!" and dove for his Xbox and turned it off right away. It was all very dramatic.

It worked normally a little bit later.

Hmm... weird. Call the Xbox Support line and see what they recommend. At least, that's what I'd do.

Well do I have to have my hard-drive or anything plugged in? I took everything out.

When I had the RRoD, all that stuff was connected, yes.

This might sound stupid, but is your 360 connected to your TV? I'm just covering all the basics - I'm not trying to say anything about you or your intelligence.

how to fix the RROD
Step 1: destroy offending X-box
Step 2: Get a Ps3
Step 3: never get a RROD again :)

Hahaha yes it is connected. Maybe my Xbox is just completely dead then. Maybe I just have to connect the hard-drive.

What model did you have?

Oh I think I have that one too, maybe I'm wrong.
It's white, and it either has a 20GB or a 60GB hard drive. I'm going offline now, but I'll bookmark this thread and check it in the morning when I'm up.

Oh yeah I must have it then. Well thanks for the help! I'm going to try to find this error code.

To answer the questions that were posed to me-

Permanent meaning that I fixed mine about a year ago, and friends boxes roughly six, five, and one month ago. All different boxes, none of them have had problems since.

Tools-Pretty much household tools, yeah. All you need is some small screwdrivers and some torque drivers(those little screwdrivers that are shaped like *). Those you might not have lying around, but theyre cheap and everywhere. Home Depot, Sears, Radioshack, etc.

And no, you don't need to be an engineer, just be careful, try not to force things too much, at you'll be good. Common sense is the prevailing rule.

I actually skipped the clamp replacement altogether, and just replaced the heat paste, and added washers to the X-clamps. No muss, no drilling, a lot easier.

Oh ok. I should try that Llama site. It actually looks pretty neat. And good for me because I have a lot of tools. My dad gets excessive amounts.

It is not in anyway hard to get rid of the red ring. You're going to have to research the subject on the internet and you're also going to have to buy some things. I repaired my own Xbox 360 and now it's also Red Ring proof. I'm going to recommend the whisper max fan. It's a replacement for the old fan. You should also get rid of the original heat paste. It's most likely melted all over the CPU and GPU chips. Clean that out and apply new paste. I bought silver paste which is ten times more expensive than the original paste.

First off, warranty expiring didn't stop me from getting it fixed, I just sent it in and got a fixed console back, it was nice.

Second, my friend tried the towel trick and it worked for like a week. This is just the risk you take when you buy a 360.

Yeah I was considering that.

I would send it in but I also opened it up before, too. I wanted to do an extended cleaning because the disk tray wasnt working. I did that a while ago.
