They used to do some incredibly diverse stuff (the Uplift Mofo Party Plan album, their cover of 'Higher Ground') but I'm With You was just awful, Frusciante really held that band together in my opinion.Spot1990 said:Nope, Beck is my favourite artist by far but he has some crap. He always tries to do new things and experiment. The only bands I can think of who have no bad songs are bands like RHCP who just keep following the same formula and are boring to me.
Another DT fan here, although I've listened to them so much in the past year I've sort of burnt myself out. Also, Portnoy stated during the making of video that Systematic Chaos was supposed to be a more raw and standard heavy album, and I think they pulled that off without straying too much from their own sound perfectly. Octavarium and Metropolis Pt.2 still remain their masterpieces for me, though.Capitano Segnaposto said:snopthesilentman said:snapCapitano Segnaposto said:snip
Well I don't mean bands that are literally flawless, just bands that have never personally let you down, that to your unique musical tastes don't have a single bad song. This is about opinions and not facts.xplosive59 said:There is no such thing as a flawless band, that idea is stupid beyond all belief. Even composers such as Mozart and Beethoven were not perfect. There are Flawless albums though, Kind of Blue by Miles Davis being the best example.
I want to say Opeth as one of my flawless bands but to be honest I haven't listened to enough of their songs to make that judgement. Still, haven't heard a song by them I haven't liked.ThyNameIsMud said:Opeth - Hands down complete masters at their craft
Depends how eclectic your tastes are, actually. Plenty of people like every single one of the ridiculously varied things Radiohead's put out for different reasons.Twilight_guy said:No. If a band only produces song that you like, then they have no variation, sing the same thing over and over and thus are crap. If they have variation and do different things then I can guarantee you that at least one song will be different from what you like and thus they aren't flawless. Luckily it doesn't really matter since you have the ability to choose things and listen to things you like as opposed to those you don't.
Yeah I know there is always that joker that likes everything, but I'm always inclined to think that either he/she is lying to try and make themselves seem music savvy, or don't have any taste (someone who could enjoy listening to a leaking faucet and enjoy it as music).OhJohnNo said:Depends how eclectic your tastes are, actually. Nah, sorry. As hard as it is to believe, there really are people out there who like multiple things for multiple reasons.Twilight_guy said:Yeah I know there is always that joker that likes everything, but I'm always inclined to think that either he/she is lying to try and make themselves seem music savvy, or don't have any taste (someone who could enjoy listening to a leaking faucet and enjoy it as music).OhJohnNo said:Depends how eclectic your tastes are, actually. Wow, people actually read those things?xplosive59 said:Are you not a fan of Drone music or do you just not think GY!BE did them well? I did read your review on Sputnikmusic a while back and I was not sure what your opinion on the genre was, I happen to love Drone music and thought that GY!BE were able to translate their sound well into a genre that is disliked by the majority of casual listeners. Just curious.AnarchistFish said:OT: See, Godspeed You! Black Emperor are my favourite band of all time but their music isn't really divided into songs... I love all their work apart from their occasional drone tracks.
Do you actually think it's hard to have a range of tastes? It's not rare for me to make my morning playlist and put in a hip hop song, an ambient/electronic song, a pop rock song and a hardcore punk song all together.Twilight_guy said:Yeah I know there is always that joker that likes everything, but I'm always inclined to think that either he/she is lying to try and make themselves seem music savvy, or don't have any taste (someone who could enjoy listening to a leaking faucet and enjoy it as music).OhJohnNo said:Depends how eclectic your tastes are, actually. Oh yay, another Nadja fan.AnarchistFish said:Well no, I don't really listen to drone. Not much anyway. I just didn't find much in these tracks to really bite into although they're nice to have in the background. To me they just felt like bits present to fill in the spaces between the main tracks and I'd rather they'd fitted them in with the main bodies of music. The drone-y bit at the end of BBF3 (can you call it drone?) is pretty amazing though and there's the odd bit of drone, in one form or another, that I like here and there. E.g. The Angelic Process, Nadja. But then again, those bands include other styles too.
