FLCL Progressive

So FLCL Progressive officially debuted last night. So far... I'm torn, the characters seem fine, the voice acting is good, the music is pretty good and its too early to tell what the real situation will be so it could be good or bad. But the designs are a bit too normal anime and the animation is way too normal anime. This would be fine if it was just a show that was cribbing from FLCL but this is FLCL Progressive. Its trying to follow one of the more unique looking animes around, you can't do standard serious animation with it, you need to be more loony toons. Plus it seems to be making call backs to FLCL but kinda awkward ones that seem to be included because FLCL.

I don't know, I suppose we shall see where the new season goes, but I hope it can forge its own path rather then try to follow the original, because so far the new season doesn't seem to have the same artistic direction as the original, which hurts it.

I thought it was flat out, just bad. Its FLCL on only the most surface level. The final scene of the episode was surreal meta commentary, and I'm not sure how much of it was intentional. It basically insults the audience by saying they will clap for FLCL as long as Haraharu is on screen. The sad thing is that its true. I can see how you could enjoy this depending on what drew you to the original but I've been seeing some embarrassing comments, like; "I was blown away by the animation", or "I was tearing up when...". The episode was a mediocre retread of a goofy ova without any of the visual flare, not groundbreaking art. This show shouldn't have been produced as a direct sequel to the original OVA because its just setting themselves up for failure.

I would be much more forgiving if it was a re-imagining or spiritual successor. In a world without the original I would consider the show okay, but as a sequel to the original it has yet to impress.

I am so done with producers digging up franchises to exploit nostalgia. Its getting exhausting when so much of modern mainstream entertainments' only value is nostalgia. ENOUGH REMAKES! LIFE MOVES ON. LETS GET NEW MEMORIES, AND NEW THINGS TO LIKE!

I'm not ready to call it bad yet. It is trying to be FLCL but without the imaginative character designs and animation that FLCL had. However, I think the characters so far have potential, the discussion about the dress was fun, pretty much every line by the 'teacher' was great, I'm unsure about the new bounty hunter or whatever woman, I do like her car but I'm definitely expecting eyebrows to show up on her.

I don't understand how anyone could be blown away by the animation, it was good for a modern anime but not for FLCL, maybe they will go to more imaginative places later on but right now the visuals are the weakest aspect of the new series.

NTF: How did you work with Yoshiyuki Sadamoto to update the character designs for the new FLCL project?

Kubota: Sadamoto-san was pretty busy in regards to being involved, but I did get some influence from the scenario from him so I had the side characters as well as the main character to design. Other than the six original characters from the first one the rest were done by me.

I'm not sure if its the design thats bad, I think its more the art style. I mean if the art style was more in the style of the original FLCL then I think the characters would look fine. I mean really the bigger issue is the animation, its not bad just standard. It needs more of an american toon feel, less of a serious anime feel.

The problem i have with the new FLCL, is not in the same regards as everyone here. Animation,story, it is a american company Turner requested a FLCL type show. When the original was pretty much its own thing and really meant as a single shot show.The new one is kind of in this weird place forced to try and pick up on what interested audiences originally. While it will no doubt be forced to do more then one season as Turner smells money coming from its former popularity.Or end it on a note which allows them to continue with it in the future.

For anyone that loves off beat shows like FLCL that can really be detrimental even if it's called an alternative version. Writing as well as Animation can be stiffened so, from any deviation too far and experimenting with itself. That it self can be a death sentence for any show which is considered off beat. Ending up with a show which may in the very end just be middle of the road when it's totally released.

I heard of this project a year/s or so ago and was not exactly thrilled TURNER was involved. The trailer finally released left me underwhelmed and made it look like it was rehashing the original show exactly. The first episodes execution left me with a "meh" feeling after watching it. I will give it a chance but so far it feels more like its pandering trying to be different but be the same FLCL. Nothing which would surprise or totally amaze me like the first one did years ago.

I understand where you are coming from, but right now the "American toon feel" is what people associate with is Cartoon Network. That itself recently,has many people not too happy about that "style" calling it a Cal-Art. (Which is not exactly right as Cal-Art people can draw.)

I thought it was fine. I won't be singing praises or anything, but I WANT to see more. Just not sure if it's something I'll be sticking with depending on how they go with it.

The original FLCL was my introduction into anime, unless you count my passive watching of Sailor Moon and Pokemon growing up.

For a first episode, it did seem to lack some sort of drawing impact that it needed.

No, nothing about that is related to anime. It generally is on shows that take inspiration from certain old anime like Ranma 1/2 and such. Where you would get extreme animation reactions to thing. Nothing about my point is related too that, I'm thinking more Loonytoons, no Teen Titans Go.

Right now FLCL Progressive's look is more from the studio that made it rather then being pushed by a western company. It was done by Production I.G. And the animation in it really feels like its from Production I.G. they have made some really good shows but they make realistic anime shows, like Ghost in the Shell: stand alone complex and Moribito. Both great shows but they are all about realism in animation. You don't get the extreme poses or cartoon antics of something like Kill La Kill. Although Production I.G. did do Cromartie High so they can do wacky when they want... Hmm.

I'll give it a shot, even the first episode was a bit slow compared the original's first episode The art's not bad, though I can understand why people don't like it.

I agree with everyone about the animation. On one hand, I'm really glad it didn't look cheaply made, but on the other, I was a little disappointed with the lack of flair the original had. Only one episode so far, so I'm trying to not make major judgements just yet. I've avoided any and all information to go into this completely blind. Really hoping for some pleasant surprises.

Having read all this before watching it (stupid I know), I didn't mind the protagonist that much. There's certainly room for growth, and since coming-of-age is a key theme of FLCL I'm fairly sure we'll see some change there. The only thing I didn't like was how the show treated the reveal of Haruko as some hero worship nonsense. She rips off the mask like we should recognise her, which of course we do, but... why would the class?

I'm looking forward to seeing the clash between the two guitar women, and can't help but wonder if Iide is somehow related to Amarao from the original somehow. And obviously finding out who the Dad was.

Hope it ramps up the crazy post-haste though. I ain't here for coherency!

I...think she was doing something to them, not sure, but I think she was using some ability or something on them, I do not think they all just got excited to see her, the main girl and I guess main guy did not seem effected and I think that 'outed' them to her in some way.
