Childhood nostalgia might be at fault, but I've been pretty unimpressed with recent Final Fantasies. Unlikeable characters, boring stories, too many deserts...

I can't decide if they need better writers or less irritating female lead characters...

They're trying to stick with things they know best.

Unfortunately, "Things they know best" gets old after about 13 games or so.

Oooh! linky time!

According to Spoony, it started with 8 and rapidly went downhill from there.

Haha true that. Square Enix just seemed to take everything fans loved about earlier Final Fantasy games and pasted loads of gimmicky bullshit over the top. The only redeeming feature of XIII was the intuitive battle system although that had the drawback of doing away with amazingly loooooooong boss battles.

I think they need BOTH[/I] better writers and less irritating characters in general. Hope was god awful. And although I thought XII was fairly decent gameplay and characters the plot itself just got lost in the sheer mass of Hunting sidequests. Oh and the concept of the story wasn't done justice anyway.

I thought VI to X were very good (only ones I've played through) but you're right...the latest two have been pretty unimpressive. Anything by Square Enix recently though has been a pile of gash anyway...

As the budget for graphics goes up, down goes everything else. Plus, now a lot more people play video games.
Aaand, you know how it goes: You have to make a game that EVERYONE can play.

In a few years we'll be playing beautifully rendered retard games.
Wait.. I think we're almost there already...

Final Fantasy IX is arguably the best in the series and FFX was the the best RPG on the PS2 and again one of the best in the series
No it didn't start with VIII
I think it started when any of the writers with any talent left, Nobuo Uematsu stopped making the music and then they made FF XIII
Ugh

Well, XIII's my favourite Final Fantasy.
I don't think there was a point they went wrong, each game's just hit and miss depending on the person.

Fair enough. I never really got into the series, so I'm gonna go before I drag it down any further.

Where? Im thinking it all started with the popularity generated from FF3(us). You see them start ramping up production of games in the Snes era. From there they switched to Sony in PSX era and started padding money off of gamesales and being out from under Nintendos thumb which allowed them to start buying up developers. The bigger of a cash cow it became, the more sluggish it grew to understand the market to which they were selling to.

EDIT: Pretty much what activision and EA have done over the last couple years.

I loved X, and IX was also very good.

I Agree with the Spoony One on VIII though, I never cared for it with all of it's Drawing.

No need to be so categorical, eh? He did say "according to Spoony". In fact, Spoony acknowledges that FFIX was a good game.

OT: I don't exactly know much about Final Fantasy, but from what I know, it's Final Fantasy 7. Not that it was a bad game, apparently far from it, but it was the shift to the current style of Final Fantasy, the one people instantly imagine when they think of modern JRPGs - androgynous protagonists, ridiculous characters and so on.

No the Ugh was aimed at FF13. I hated that game so much, waited four years for a kick in the balls. I didn't even bother watching the video

The series peaked at the back-to-back masterpieces of VI and VII. VIII is one of the worst games in the series with its slipshod narrative, terribly written cast, and gameplay that can be broken with no effort whatsoever. It was no wonder that Sakaguchi yanked the reins of the series away from VIII's dev team and gave it someone else.

IX, unfortunately, still wasn't quite there. The battle system was back to basics and fine and the characters were likable, but there were a few problems. The plot, for instance, was kind of meandering and loose, leading to confusion at times. The skills system was also a bit clunky and led to a lot of instances of grinding for abilities. A good game, but a flawed one to say the least.

X had a more coherent narrative and by far the best battle system of the entire series. The supporting was interesting as well as Tidus but it suffered from two big problems. 1) Yuna was BORING. Seriously, she was a stiff, uninteresting heroine and because of that Tidus was left with a love interest that killed his development. 2) Seymour might very well be the worst villain/rival in FF history. He was annoying, boring, and uninteresting. I know Square was drained after Kefka and Sephiroth, but a terrible, uncharismatic villain leads for bad conflict. Again, a flawed game but still good.

XII is where things officially turned BAD. Before Sakaguchi left he hand-picked the game's director: Yasumi Matsuno, a man whose track record is absolutely spotless containing some of the best narratives in gaming. However, the team consisted of the FF Tactics team and the FF IX team. Long story short, the FFIX team threw a hissy fit and Matsuno left halfway through development due to the amount of bullshit and it shows in the game. The battle system is painfully boring, the characters the worst since VIII (three of them having NO justification for their existence), a storyline that is impenetrable, and a stupid skills system. That was the point where FF died and Square has merely been directing a desecrated corpse.

As for XIII, I needn't say anything. I would say that Square has a chance to save the series if they handed the reins to Matsuno, but considering the amount of bullshit he had to stomach the first time I doubt he'll ever touch the FF series again. Best to just euthanize the series at this point.

Dear Buddha, that's a lot of words.

All games go through patches like FF, most of it's probably down to trial and error really. Loads of big names have had their dissapointments, people say CoD went downhill with MW2, despite it being the biggest release ever. DMC 2 is easily weaker than the first. Some people say that GTA4 is nowhere near as good as 3 or VC.

I don't think it's that franchises go wrong or "downhill", it's mostly just down to the individual players experience, or even peer pressure..

Wrong, its the change that angered fans, not sticking to too much of the same.

Problem is, if they stuck to the same, fans would be complaining about how there wasn't change.

Fans are annoying to please, aren't they?

FF fell off the boat at 8. 8 was going in a sort of new direction like 7, though unlike 7 it was less pointy, and the story made sense in the most cracked out way imaginable, so it was kinda fun.. 9 was the try too hard throw back to appease the pre-7 fans. That's when I gave up on Final Fantasy. I couldn't get into 10 because the characters were frustratingly moronic and sadly it got -worse- in FF12. I no longer care about anything branded with Final Fantasy....

Let's see... Where to begin? The original creator left. The guy who made all its best music left. Gameplay elements were dropped. Characters and the plots, the major attractions of the series, became bland and uninteresting.

I think it all began after the tenth game of the series was released. The game was a success, but after that all shit hit the fan. What was once known as the dominant leader in the genre (Square didn't just make Final Fantasy, which they sadly forgot as well) has now become a joke.
