[small]Not a Scott Pilgrim fan, but I do like seeing Mary Elizabeth Winstead...[/small]

ON Topic, I'm in the skeptical "alright, I'll give you a chance to win me over" camp.

The Thing 1985 was a success on the limitations and strengths of the physical prop "rubber" monster effects and gore, coupled with the strength of the actors portraying a "it could be any of us" isolated paranoia pressure tank.

In principle though, it can be cool seeing some new artists can do with an established story...

Expecting the worst, hoping for the best...

I think it looks pretty good.

Besides it got Carpenter's blessing, so I'm going to maintain a positive attitude until I actually see it.

The main problem I have with this movie is the fact that this movie's main character is a woman. There were no women in the original movie. This means that the main character will either have to die or there will be severe retcons.

Consider the fact that Hollywood has a hard on for "strong women" who are literally walking screamfactories for the first three quarters of the movie. This means that the woman will survive. Goodbye, good movie.

This is about the group of Norwegians who were there before the Americans in the first movie. Which also means we know all of these characters are dead meat in the long run anyway. So for that reason, I have no problem with the main character being a woman. She's only going to die anyway.

Ugh...I'm honestly not sure about how I feel about this. I don't have immediate hate for it like I did for the Nightmare on Elm Street remake but I'm getting a 'not right' vibe from this. I think the law should be that all good movies from 60s-90s should be left well alone by Hollywood.
The original was more than a horror movie, it was a group of men losing their minds and having no trust for one another. This just doesn't seem to have the same charm. But I'll wait and see.

The thing was a remake anyway, if not a remake a revisiting, hopefully they do it more justice than most films they redo

The problem with making a prequel is that we all know how it will end. People in a helicopter chasing a dog.
Not always really a bad thing. Plenty of good stories are retrospective. So maybe it's less about the ending and more about how they got there.

You remember "Deep Blue Sea"? It had a strong female protagonist that you thought was going to survive, because she was a strong female protagonist.
She "bites" it in the third act, a mere 5 minutes or so from the credits.
Just covering my bases with the spoiler bits.

If you've ever seen JC's The Thing than you know
that nearly everyone in the Norwegians camp got assimilated, with like three men left trying to kill the dog The Thing became to get away.
Those details might not be exact, but I'm just working from memory here. But, seeing as I know how the movie will end, I'll wait for DVD to rent it. But damn, The Thing was a good movie.

I'm... hoping for this film. As it is, I think there realls shouldn't be a prequel. Since it's happening though, I'm just hoping it's good. Lord knows we need more true horror movies these days... slasher movies and sudden 'scare' effects do not a horror movie make...

I swear I'm the only person who genuinely enjoyed that film...
I'll admit, that I didn't really give it a fair cop. But to me, there will only be Robert Englund as the real Freddie. I won't deny that it's OK for a remake, but I still have my own prejudice against remakes holding me back.

I don't understand why any of John Carpenter's films need a remake. He's nothing short of a brilliant horror director.
I agree. That's why this is a prequel focusing on the Norwegian base.
Is it weird that I can't actually tell the difference between the original film and this film? Well, of course there's a few differences (female main character, further exploration of what actually causes it), but they can easier be chalked up as a re-imagining of the original than a prequel.

Maybe it's the fact that I only saw the original film once when I was a small boy and never saw any of the sequels that lets me appreciate the remake for what it has.

Namely a thoroughly creepy Freddy who genuinely made me feel incredibly uncomfortable, a fantastically creepy atmosphere, and Kyle Gallner in a speedo. [sub]What? Don't you judge me![/sub]

Which reminds me, I really should watch the original again since I've forgotten almost everything about it by now.

Well, at least they are using REAL Norwegians this time. I laughed quite a lot in the beginning of the original.
Almost as funny as hearing Pam and Eric Northman in True Blood converse in Swedish. Alexander Skarsgaard in his mother tongue, and Kristin Bauer in something I have to concentrate REALLY hard to understand.

Doesn't look very good, I don't like the lead character she doesn't seem very interesting, for most of the trailer she comes off as unnerved but still claim and logical or shocked/startled
That just isn't entertaining and it's kinda difficult for the me to connect to. She just doesn't come off as a strong character I just can't see her as the kinda person that fights weird unknown creatures from space in Antarctica with a flamethrower. I don't find her a believable lead. I think I'll avoid this unless it gets good review,
