For the older gamers (10+ years of gaming), what is your GOTD (game of the decade)?

Shadow of the Colossus, Deus Ex, or World of Warcraft, depending on whether you measure through artistic value, innovation, or cultural impact.

Uh, that is probably Escape Velocity: Nova. Been playing that for about two thirds of my life.

This is that awkward moment where I realise I remember the games I played 15 years ago better than the ones I've played this year.

Shit, man.

I can think of loads of games I really like but I'm terrible at picking 'favourites'. I still have to think about what criteria I would have to judge that on before I pick and choose. Like, best story? Most fun? Most hours played?

Yeah, I think I'm going to have to come back to this question.

Victoria: An Empire Under The Sun, Civilization IV, Oblivion, both modern Fallout games, Red Dead Redemption, Metal Arms: Glitch in the System, the Mercenaries series, Assassins Creed 2...

Too damn many games. For lack of a way to break the stalemate, I'll say Skyrim.

Being included in the group of people you call "older gamers" makes me feel really old, although I'm only 19...

On topic: My personal game of the decade just has to be Gothic. The only game I completed a two digit number of times and probably also the game that actually made me a gamer. (And for that i curse you! Stupid game...)

Sweet liquid babies! This thread has really taken off! /soproud

Seems like the front runners are RDR, Portal, KOTOR, Half-Life 2, Shadow of the Colossus, WoW, Morrowind/Oblivion, Halo and Deus Ex.

I'd call that a champion list of contenders indeed.

Alien Vs Predator 2 would be my pick. Had a fun non-standard multiplayer, and is solidly good in all categories.

I wrote in Nox at first, and then realized Nox came out in 2000 making it ineligible. Then I thought of Total Annihilation and realized that came out in 1997. Then I realized that holy shit, Doom 3 came out nearly 8 years ago. EIGHT YEARS. I'm getting old.

Honorable mentions to:
Arcanum - combat gameplay is simply adequate, and minor bugs.
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines - some skills are strategies are extremely overpowered.
Warcraft 3 - Unbalanced multiplayer
Mass Effect 2 - storyline that at a lot of points makes no sense.
Max Payne(1 & 2) - repetitive gameplay
Dragon Age - lack of class balance, and somewhat annoying opponent leveling.
Call of Duty(The original.) - More standard gameplay than AvP2. Otherwise well balanced.
Fallout: New Vegas - Lack of driving centralized storyline.
The Witcher 2 - Personal preference in that I don't like crafting systems that are somewhat integral to Witcher 2.
Mount and Blade(Any) - Multiplayer has minor lag concerns. Singleplay is good but not extraordinary.

All the above games are very good, but barely missed their marks.

My favorite game of the last decade....

Um...I'd have to go with Dead Rising or Left 4 Dead

I remember the first time I played both of these and how surprisingly shocked I was at how much fun I was having.

Now if it was my all time favorite game (seeing as I've been a gamer since 1985 when my parents bought me an Atari) it would have to be Earthbound. Hands. Down.

No other game have I played 10+ times through and still had the urge to play it again as soon as I finish. An amazing game.

Mass Effect, GTA: Vice City or Warcraft 3. The amount of time i spend in the last 2 is measured in months. I think i`l go with Vice City.

Why the 10 years if I may ask? Out of sheer curiosity by the way.
Well, it wouldn't be a Game of the Decade otherwise, would it? :) And I felt the 'favorite game of all time' thing has been done to death. I wanted to add something to make it a bit more thought provoking and limited.
Even after 18 years of gaming I still don't bother to read quests...
WELL I GUESS THAT GAVE AWAY WHAT GAME I PLAYED FOR 6 YEARS x3
Yea. I noticed that, Blizzard at the start of World of Warcraft had theese really awesome questlogs. . . That was until they realized how little of the fanbase read the things, now the questlogs seem to literally read out "Hey dude, go kill ten of this monster because I have a firm dislike of its kind" They have shrunken in both size and quality. Only exceptions being the ones where you are stuck with an NPC.

Point is, you arent missing out. They dont really bother to write proper quests in MMO's.
They are to lazy to do stuff themselves! :V

I would have choosen the Metal Gear series, but since I have to obey the rules of your thread playing grounds then I call out Deus Ex: Human Revolution. End of story.

Mass Effect, and it wasn't even close.

I had to consider this same question at the end of 2009 for a website I write for, except I had to rank a top ten for the decade. What I found interesting was that the quality dropped off pretty markedly, pretty quickly, to the point where I was struggling to fill the last few spots on the list with really great games. Diablo II was an easy starter, so was Rock Band and I gave Assassin's Creed a gurnsey. I included Bioshock mostly on the back of how pretty it was, KOTOR was probably included, Need For Speed: Most Wanted definitely was. I'm not even sure I remember what the other three were, I think out of desperation I might have included Guitar Hero: Metallica at number ten.
