I know, I know, another one of these threads -- and this one is being started by a brony, instead of someone who has apparently been avoiding the internet for the past year. I'm just letting you guys know that Know Your Meme has done a video explaining the whole thing, all the way down to the article that got /co/ interested in the show in the first place.

Now can we please get a sticky? :p

Pet Rocks.

Tomagachi.

My Little Pony is just the latest in a long line of fads, and it's perfectly fine to ride the fad wave. I'm just not on that ride.

I love these Know you're meme videos, the other day someone brought up this exact same topic and someone else linked this video, I spent all afternoon watching every single video there, my favorite one is the one about the cannibal troll.

While I do like the show, I can't really call myself a fan or a brony because of the lengths of obsession the hardcore people go through is staggering.

With that said, My Little Pony: FiM is indeed one of the more interesting internet phenomena in recent memory.

That video actually irks me quite a bit since it says the origin of the word "Brony" comes from /B/ (AKA 4Chan) and "Pony" when it's actually just "Bro" and "Pony".

EDIT: Yes I know /B/ isn't the only board on 4Chan before anyone corrects me.

It makes anyone who watches it think we're children of 4Chan, some are surely from 4Chan, but a huge portion isn't.

Mhm. We're just all mindless automatons. Not an independent thought in my head. I just like ponies because all my friends are doing it.

Your post is very condescending, sir.

Yep, I guess I'll have to whip this out again:

Seriously, I've lost count of the amount of times I've seen this thread.

EDIT: Sorry, I've now read the OP. You acknowledged the fact that this thread has been done a gazillion times.

Hamtaro is way better than ponies.
Tamagochi is where it's at. I didn't watch the video...And I don't plan to. As far as I see it is it's popular. I don't care for it. I don't know why. I don't want to know why. It'll go away eventually when all the people hit the age of 20ish lol. If not then god help us paul.
Hate to tell you this, but most of us are in our early 20's to begin with. I used to be slightly embarrassed that I liked the show; then Summer break ended, I went back to college, and I found out that about 90% of the nerd population (at a research university with a student body the size of a small city, so that's a lot of nerds) are now bronies. If this dies anytime soon, it'll be because we all got tired of it, or because the new season (which Lauren Faust did not work on) turns out to suck, not because we all suddenly outgrew it.

As for it being a fad, well, depending on your definition, it either definitely isn't, or it remains to be seen. If you define a fad as something large numbers of people do just to go along with the crowd, this isn't a fad, because bronies honestly enjoy the show. By that criteria, it's like saying the many, many fans of Xena were participating in a fad back in the day.

If by fad you mean something that bursts onto the scene, is hugely popular for a while, and then fizzles out just as quickly, well, there's no way to know just yet whether it's going to do that. We'll have to wait until people start to get bored of it before we can know whether it's going to follow that pattern.

The /b/ part is wrong, but the 4 chan connection is absolutely valid. The whole thing started on /co/.

I watched the entire video, and all I took away from it was that Skrillex is apparently as mainstream as poptarts.

FUCK, I'M A BRONY AND A HIPSTER, THIS IS TERRIBLE NEWS FOR ME.
