In other words "reviews are objectively worthless" and as far as i am concerned that makes them absolutely worthless
Because if it doesn't apply to everyone, it can't possibly apply to anyone eh?

I kinda agree with him on his one. Actually I'm finding Forbes to pretty much spot on with their gaming articles. Hell more so than most gaming centered sites and publications. FORBES... Think about how fucking weird that is.

Yeah, it really is pretty damn weird. If anything, I'd expect a general news magazine (Time, Newsweek, etc) to have a decent gaming section, not a financial magazine...

As much as I agree with the guy's points it is a bit of a two way street with this. I bet if I told your average angry birds/farmville player that I like stuff like fallout, mass effect the total war games or any other console or PC title that isn't super mainstream like COD I would be called a basement dwelling nerd.

Also the guy is being a bit offensive the main reason most gamers don't like angry birds is because they played castle crashers for free years ago. And it is the shit that zynga come out with about not caring about games and ripping off other peoples creations that get to a lot of us. And we also level a lot of complaints at farmville that you will see people level at MMO's such as the constant grind just for the next level etc.

But to be honest this is how the general public sees gamers because of that annoyingly loud minority that can't back up their reasons for not liking something rather that looking for the genuine complaints people have.

Hello,

I wrote the Forbes article, and it's great to see so much good discussion over here at the Escapist.

I agree that bits are a tad incediary in there, but I tried to make sure it was clear I was not talking about all gamers, but a vocal population with an outsize presence on the net. It's a broader trend to somehow classify the games that we're used to as "good" and games that we're not as "bad." Angry Birds, Tiny Wings, Plantz vs. Zombies and yes, even Farmville, are excellently crafted and executed games. You may not like them, but dismissing them wholesale just seems petty and childish coming from those that would argue that games are art.

To me, Infinity blade is the exception that proves the rule -- gamers rally around it because it looks like games they're used to.

To the broader notion, Forbes is neither pro-gamer, nor anti-gamer, nor anything really. Articles I write are mine and mine alone, and they are just my opinions. Sometimes, those that are lumped as "gamer" like them, sometimes, they don't.
Well surely they are used to games like infinity blade because they like those games therefore they will want to support it. to me infinity blade looks like a title that has had some thought put in and not thrown together to make a quick buck.

In response to that article, the thing I always feel is this: Facebook games and iOS games are a different industry. Yeah, you play them, but I'd say tabletop gaming is far more closely related to the types of stuff that people go to gaming websites to read about, and most barely cover those at all.

Call me a snob, but I will stop reading websites if they start reporting excessively on the inanity of FB shit because it's not interesting - it's not the same hobby, nor is it the same market. I'd be pleased that gaming had a huge audience if that audience had any interest in pursuing the medium to its natural end (*cough* Immersive Sims *cough*), but it doesn't.

I can't help but feel that gaming sites covering Facebook's titles would be like film sites covering straight-to-DVD and TV movies, most of which assuredly don't.
Thats actually a great analogy. And i think the reason many rally against fb games and IOS ones is the lack of quality control, the IOS is chock full of shovelware, its disgraceful and disrespectful to the consumers (not to mention clone games original devs) apple really needs to tighten its rules in this regard.

I personally believe that the cash-ins will be less present as time rolls on and it will become a better more respectful platform. In its current state i can sympathise with those who can't stand it. Hell i can't stand it, one of the reasons i went droid.
And as someone else has pointed out, the very vast majority of the shit on Facebook is more cynical an attempt at creating and milking a cash cow than even Call of Duty is.

So saying Farmville is the same at its core as any other game is like saying Transformers 2 and The Avengers were basically the same movie, they're both action aren't they? Am I a snob for saying that Jack and Jill was schlock but Idiocracy was great just because one is a 'classic' and the other one appeals to the masses?
Saying their not is like... saying the Avengers is not a 'proper' film because its sci-fi trappings and comic based appeal to a mass audience instead of being a high work of art like Citizen Kane.

Calling Terry Pratchet am amateurish hack because he doesn't write in chapters, and his work can't be literature because its fantasy based.

Saying every fantasy novel ever is white knights on steeds saving fair damsel from dragons and evil wizards.

Its snobbery, unnecessary divisiveness, and acting like newbies who have never played a game before are supposed to learn by mastering control schemes that would have left us buried as kids.

Apparently you all missed my point.

I, too, agree with the article. I do not however like the way it was presented. The point could have been made without the term "snobs" being thrown around.
So what, can't gamers take a little criticism? A snob is a pretty accurate term for the people he's describing.

I'm called worse things than that by gamers themselves when I play online.
