Force a RROD?

My Xbox's disc drive is broken. It doesn't read discs anymore. Unfortunately my warranty has run out. I can't pay the $100 repair charge, nor do I want to void the extra 3 years for RROD repairs by opening it up and replacing the drive myself.

So I tried to overheat it in an attempt to force it to RROD so I could get it replaced for free. After leaving it on while wrapped in heavy towels, but rather than kill the system, overheating it fixed the disc drive (?!). It worked perfectly again for about a week before it died again. Then I overheated it again, and the disc drive came back for another 3-4 days. Now I have to do this every day and it's pissing me off. Are there any methods for forcing the console to RROD other than just massively overheating it?

From what I hear, you just need to use it.

Not helpful? Sorry...

Wow, that's pretty immoral. Just go out and buy one like everyone else. Don't try to cheat a company out of their money, even if they have a lot of it. From what you've said, you DVD drive isn't broken, you've just got some messed up soldering that's disconnecting stuff from the mb.

Few theories

1) Is your Xbox a highlander?

2) Is it's Satan's Xbox?

But in all seriousness, you could just leave it on forever... of couse your electric bill will skyrocket, and seeing how you don't have $100 for repairs, you probably don't want a more costly electric bill....

I paid for a console, which broke down 2 weeks after the (alarmingly short, considering the console's horrible reliability) warranty ran out. I'm not giving them another $100.

Then don't buy another. Problem solved. And The warranty is three years long. That is the longest warranty I have ever heard about outside of motor vehicles.

Did you at least try the fixes found on the Xbox site before trying to game the system?

Convert your xbox into a hookah? Really, I don't know. How old is your xbox? If it's one of the original Xenon motherboards it's probably evidence of some sort of divine intervention that it hasn't RROD'd already. But if you've got one of the later motherboards, they're built with preventing the RROD in mind, so forcing an RROD may not even be possible.

don't do it. I know someone who forced a RROD to get a disc drive repaired, and when they sent it back, the drive still didnt' work.

Don't force it just take out all of the plugs and leave your Box alone for about 24 hours and it should start working again. That's what i did at least.

If forcing the machine to overhead didn't make it red ring, it's probably not gonna happen. It shouldn't take too long to save up $100 anyway.

If your xbox has the more recent motherboards it may be impossible to force a RROD. Also if repeated overheatings didn't already make it go belly up I'd say its not about to any time soon.
