Foreign flags in the US

Driving to work this evening I saw a car with the mexican flag in the back window and this got me thinking. Should foreign flags be allowed to be flown in the US? I'm not talking about say the UN or embassies with foreign flags, or something in your car window(for example). But rather should people be allowed to fly say the mexican flag in place of the US flag? IE in your yard you fly the mexican flag without the American flag above it(as is the norm I believe).

I think even if legal it's extremely tacky. Your kind of saying I'm not american I'm X, and I don't even think enough of this country to even fly their flag.

I've no problem with other countries flags flying, I do have problems with not being able to fly my own countries, in my own country because of political correctness. Damn it why does the UK fail so frequently.

hmmm I understand being proud of a heritage but I think a flag should be flown under a US flag rather than in place of. Your only isolating yourself from the country your in by not doing that.

Have you considered that maybe these people AREN'T american. Sure, maybe not all of them are, but some of them may well be.

I agree with this. You have every right to be proud of who you are and where you come from.

Geez can you not fly your own? We've ran into that somewhat here, mostly neighborhood unions not allowing them. But you would have no problem with a neighbor flying a russian flag in absence of the union jack or whatever the UK's is. Maybe i'm just overly attached to my flag lol

I think that demonstrating pride of your heritage or homeland is fine. I find it rather humorous though when demonstrators who want citizenship start waving their country's flag.

Yes I presumed they aren't. I think it would only be appropriate to fly it under your current resident counties flag though.

Do you have a problem with people supporting the team that's playing against yours in a sports game as well? How about people who like different bands to you or like different food to you at dinner.

Why should that matter? My grandfather will occasionally fly a Canadian flag from his flagpole, despite living in Australia and not even being Canadian (he visited Canada and loved it so he bought a flag). There is nothing wrong with showing a sense of pride about one's own country, and that extends to other nationalities living within your country. Taking away peoples autonomy in a situation like this seems ignorant and fearfully racist I'm afraid, like you don't believe they should belong because they have a pride for their own country. I can't see a problem with it, citizens should be encouraged to love their country, even if they reside in another one.

I see your point, but to some people (especially English-speaking) we're lumped in with Americans so often we'll try a little bit harder to show our own colours. For example computer software that allows you to pick a language will almost always display English as either U.S. English or English (United States).
You don't see flags often here in New Zealand, but when you do they're always by themselves, never grouped with the NZ flag.

It's true, although I took it somewhat out of context, the scenario was for St. Georges day, one of our patron saints, he slew a dragon, and his flag is Englands (the red cross on white background) a taxi company banned a driver from placing it on his taxi because it might offend the Japanese considering the Dragon is important to their mythology. Political Correctness gone mad!

I don't know, after coming out from University halls I've probably seen more countries flags than anyone else in my family as students hang them up in windows. Being proud of your heritage is fine, just so long as it doesn't get priority of the heritage of the country your in.

Honestly, I'm all for flying a flag on it's own without the American one on top. I'm not much of a patriot, and there are some pretty cool flags out there that I'd like to show off.
