So I had been playing Just Cause 2 like crazy, and my younger cousin was visiting. I decided to show him inFAMOUS, since he likes superheroes. For five minutes I sat there, confused because I kept thinking I had a grappling hook.

This thing ever happen to you, where you switch games but can't mentally switch mechanics?

Hasn't happened when I switch games, but I've had this problem switching game systems. I'll be so used to using the ps3 controller, then I try to use the 360 controller the same way, and the wiimote especially on those games that require you to turn it on it's side, forget it.

Portal 2 came out a few weeks ago.

Shortly after I had thrashed all of the single player achievements out of it, I decided to continue tackling the Lambda Locator achievement in Half Life 2.

Let's just say it didn't end well.....

I think I speak for everyone with 'unlearning the headshot' in Dead Space.
Nothings more funnier/terrifying than shooting some space alien zombie monsters face off, and thinking its dead, walking away from it whilst it continues to chase after you going GRABBLEGURBLEGRABBLE! and attempting to eat your face.

Along with that I sometimes jump into a tank on Battlefield or Halo thinking I need two more crewmembers to get the thing going after playing Operation Flashpoint, (tanks need a driver, gunner and a commander) only to realise that all you need to is just push a button or move the stick forward...

It happens sometimes, especially when I'm playing similar styled games, it take a little bit to re-acclimate to the control scheme, but I did want to mention that Just Cause 2 does the exact thing for me too. I have to literally mentally purge from playing 3rd-person games like Assassin's Creed, RDR, etc. because I keep looking around, thinking "All I have to do is grapple up there and....oh wait."

....

...damn, now I want to play Just Cause 2 again.

Switching between Gears of War and every other shooter I ever play. "Reload dammit! Argh! Oh yeah, wrong button."

I usually also go through quite a few grenades in Halo due to my instant reflex to go for the aiming trigger.

I have trouble switching FPS games on short notice. I'll look for the reload button and end up jumping, or run out of cover instead of shooting. *sigh*

Dead Space 2 for me. While I never had this problem with "unlearning the headshot", and throwing out other mechanics you've been conditioned to (I never understand how people found that all that hard), I do have a problem when switching to a genre that aesthetically looks similar, but gameplay is completely different-stealth.

Dead Space ---> Splinter Cell = My ass kicked for the next six hours.

Had a moment like that recently. Been playing Final Fantasy: Dissidia, and I just switched back to Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep.

It's weird, because the games FEEL very similar in alot of ways, but their button layouts are exact opposites (attack and jump buttons are switched, for example).

Every time I play Halo after playing Call of Duty I always try to click the stick to sprint. Then I wonder why the hell I'm moving so slow.

(this comment is not suitable for american readers).

Whenever I play Pro Evolution Soccer, I keep forgetting the buttons are backwards compared to FIFA. A lot of matches screwed because of that...

Also whenever the axis is inverted in a game, and I just don't know which way it feels more natural. I play inverted Y in a game and get used to it, then suddenly in other game it's not inverted, and I end up looking at the sky, but when I switch back to the inverted Y game I do the same thing because I played the previous one... Let's just say you don't jump from Metal Gear Online into Call of Duty without doing a few offline practices...

This.

It's always slightly annoying for me switching from one FPS (say Halo) to another (say CoD) due to the little changes in the control scheme. I can't even count the amount of times, for example, I've pressed a button to reload only to end up tossing a grenade at the wall in front of me.
