Well, the past ten years gave us the ps2, an incredibly successful console. I guess the "Gaigin" is doing pretty well...

I once had a "japanese" experience, it involved a butt-load of tentacles, conformity and xenophobia.

Anyone else predicting some sort of major in-fighting at Sony?

Howard Stringer versus Koichiro Tsujino, in the battle for dominance over Sony.... THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!!!
And they are goint to fight it out in a big arena with swords and winner has to cut of the losers head and takes thier power in the process? Please tell me that how it is going to play out...

OT: Ok...Nothing beats some plain old raceism...

No your not, especially with the quotes. I was like, "WTF does Foreigner have to do with Sony?"

Ah good old Japanese racism.

Though, it can work in your favour some times I guess. My sister has red hair and is very pale. She was offered THOUSANDS of dollars to dance (with clothes on nonetheless) at a Japanese club for one night. I guess there are very few natural redheads around Japan.

Oh cripes, that was almost a racist story.

Going down the tubes here.

So what's the reason Sony is falling behind? At least partially because a non-Japanese citizen is running it, Tsujino said. He commented that Sony "should never have been run by a foreigner." Tsujino didn't elaborate with any juicy details, but did say that a "foreigner can't lead Sony back to its founding principles, which is rooted in the Japanese experience."
sigh... (rubs eyes)

and people say its racist to call japan one of the most xenophobic nations in the world?
or to say that their culture is behind?

yeah... while i understand, its still about as nice as saying "you shouldnt promote a hispanic man" (and im hispanic, so i can relate)

as Stan (from south park) would say... "This is pretty f***ed up right here."

A 70's rock band has resorted to coorperate espionage?
...So appropriate.
Because the Japanese aren't known for xenophobia at all.

Touch of racist? Nah, the Japanese in general are EXTREMELY racist, especially many of the older generation, though some in the younger generation are as well.

Usually not of the "Kill and burn" type racism, but more the "These people will never be one of us" kind. An absolute and complete refusal to accept a foreigner into Japanese society as one of their own, even if you speak the language fluently.

In Japan they're still fairly polite, but in Korea which has some of the same sentiments, many people act like you don't exist and will straight up cut you off in queues and anywhere else there is a pecking order.

Sorry, Tsujino, but Stinger can't be blamed for Sony's blind infatuation with technology, the main reason why it has been and still is in trouble. Plus, had it not been for Stinger's organisational skills, it's quite likely that Sony would have been in even worse shape than it currently is.

That said, Japanese or not, Stinger isn't going to save Sony. In order for that to happen, Sony will have to change it's views and reasses the values by which they create new products. If there is one thing I can agree with Tsujino, it is that Sony needs to go back to its roots. Back in the day, Sony was a disruptive company. Every new product they would make would shake the very foundation of an established market and change it forever (the introduction of the Walkman being a prime example). As a result, they became one of the behemoths of the electronics industry.

Unfortunately, their growth seems to have caused them to fall into the same mentality that plagued the many companies they destroyed, blindly following the guideline that "bigger is better" and just making what they already had better and not developing entirely new devices. As a result, they allowed themselves to be disrupted by others, which is why they are now losing ground on all fronts.

Once, Sony was a name that struck fear into the hearts of men, a dark knight that would bring about chaos and establish a new order from the ashes. Nowadays, however, it has become nothing more than a joke:

While this does sadden me as a fan of the original PlayStation, I am also well aware that they have noone but themselves to blame for such a state of affairs.
