I for one love music. I also love singing. I also play/own a guitar. I want to start a band, but don't know anyone who either isn't already in one or isn't already in one. I know that most bands are formed by groups of friends getting together, but what are some other ways to form a band? How did your band form? (If you are in one.)

I'm not in a band, but I would think that it is important to find a group of people you can stand. Musicians are a particularly diverse group-- the motivations for starting a band can be various and irreconcilable between members of a band, so you should make sure the people you find are "in it" for the same reason as you are.

Avoid anyone who wears a button shirt with ripped-off sleeves or dudes with particularly insane haircuts (unless you have one too-- there needs to be a balance of insane haircuts).

Mate you've said isn't already in one twice. But really just seem to form from clubs, schools or music group things

Find people who will support a system of checks and balances in the creative process and won't leave the band because of creative differences. If that fails, pick up a bass and a drum set and write and record it all yourself.

The trick seems to be find someone else for me it was a close friend. I play guitar so does he and he also does vocal (in a perfect world he would like to not play guitar). From us two we have a base and then we just swap out people as we need to. Meet people alot of people play instruments and poof there ya go. The only one that seems tough is drums. If you can lock down a solid drummer DO IT! You said you sing and play guitar. Find a kid who plays the drums and within no time you will have people who want to join your band.

Post a flyer for yourself at a local music store. List what you are into and what you wish to play. Include little tear off sheets with your name and phone number.

We always used to do that when we were looking for band members, it worked out really well. Bands looking for new musicians will contact you.

Flyers, Kijiji (I've actually seen quite a few postings there), stuff like that.

Side note: Once I get my hands on a bari sax, I'm totally starting/joining a ska band.

The time-honoured way: Go to your local music store (the one that sells guitars, amps and drums) and check if they have a bulletin board. You can find postings from bands looking for members or musicians looking for bands, or post your own. If there are any good, local record stores--by which I mean the ones that stock local/indie/underground CDs and vinyl and have knowledgeable and passionate staff, not the bigbox chain--they might also have a bulletin board. You can also try Kijiji, Facebook or other websites.

If there's a local music scene friendly to the kind of music you want to play, try to get involved in it: go to shows, make friends with other bands, and maybe ask people at the clubs if they or someone they know wants to jam.

Go to open mic nights. All you need is a guitar and some songs under your belt, and usually you can play mostly or all covers. You get used to playing in public and you might find someone else whose musical skill or songwriting you like and you can potentially pick up a bandmate or two that way. And redblinky has an excellent point: unless you are a really awesome songwriter, it really helps to have at least one other brain to bounce ideas off of.

Try to jam with as many people as you can, and learn as many songs as you can. And I mean complete songs from beginning to end. You'd be surprised how many people say they can play guitar and only know a handful of riffs from here and there.

I'm a bass player, and it pains me to say this, but most songs can get away with having simple basslines. Find an enthusiastic friend who's willing to shell out for a cheap bass and amp (you can buy those package deals in music stores for $200 or less), and teach them how to play basic basslines. Then all you really need is to find a drummer (good luck!).
