I was excited to hear about the Forza 7 demo going live yesterday and I downloaded it the moment I got home. I have a long standing love for the Forza series for some reason I don't quite understand.

Sadly this demo is a huge 22GB file of barebones nothing. It's three stand alone races that really don't do anything different from Forza 6, and I fear the game is becoming iterative. The first 4 Forza games had genuinely interesting and fun progressive career modes, where you start with lowly D class cars through a ton of events and locations, working your way into powerful S Class cars doing 220MPH.

Since the Xbone though, the campaigns have been haphazard at best. Both 5 and 6 have had pointless campaigns that offered no real sense of accomplishment or progression. In both those games you get into Ferrari's really really quickly.

Now while I can't say for sure with Forza 7, I can say the demo is there to show off weather effects more than anything else and on my high powered gaming PC the load times were incredibly long. In fact, one of the races where you race in a lightning storm took longer to load that to actually do the full two lap race! What the fuck is that shit?

While the game ran 50-60fps easily throughout the race, I noticed that the AI cars drive like they aren't attached to the road. It's like the AI car models shift side to side and when they turn, they are very blocky about it. It is really jarring to watch especially since your car feels great, sticking and clinging to the road. Hopefully that gets worked out.

All in all, I may have to wait until I see some reviews and gameplay on Forza 7. I need to see the optimization fixed because 5 minute load times are utterly unacceptable, the shitty AI cars on the road need to be fixed, and I need to see what the campaign mode looks like because I need to see something that will motivate me to go from race to race.

Kinda ironic that Microsoft, the behemoth PC software company releases a crappy PC port. Ironic, but not surprising.

I had heard kinda eh things about 5's campaign. Though does 6 really ramp up like that? Shame, I know what you mean, I like the fact that you start with an economy car first before growing in to a super car and then prototype later.

I was suspicious about how they ran so even though they were available I wanted to eventually get an Xbone to play the Forza's. Sorry to derail but how has Horizon 3 ended up performance wise, I like how crazy they went and want to get that one.

I've only played the demo, but it ran absolutely fine on my system (GTX 1070) at 4K resolution with minimal frame drops. And it's possibly the best looking game I've ever played. But I'm not sure how relevant that is.

Anyway... man, that sounds like some ridiculous load times... I've been really looking to Forza 7 (never played one for more than a few hours because I've never had an Xbox) but I've only been cautiously optimistic. I knew there were too many ways they could mess it up. But thanks for letting me know there was a demo out, I'm downloading it now... slowly...

Since I didn't make the jump to XBone, I haven't been able to play Forza since v4. I could swear Forza6 was supposed to be Crossplay whatever, but I'm not keen on the Windows store, which is the only way MS will allow XBox games onto PC.

I might go back and play 3 or 4 again. 2 was the only one I played completely, every car, race, mode, etc. Thoroughly loved it. I think PC users are probably better off with the forthcoming Project Cars 2, from all I've heard.

Wasn't Forza 5 just a storefront with microtransactions galore to buy all the different cars? Very disappointing that you don't get the full game anymore, nor can you unlock all the vehicles in game.

Okay, I've had the chance to play the demo now, and I have to say I'm impressed. My experiences with the loading times were nothing like what the OP experienced. I timed them, and yes, they were kind of long: 30 seconds from Mugello, 50 seconds for the Nurburgring (which the OP said took 5 minutes for him) and just under a minute for Dubai. So I'd say there's definitely an issue somewhere in the OP's system, or in the way the game is interacting with it.

As for the performance, it's pretty good. I had no issues maintaining a smooth frame rate at 4K on Mugello and the Nurburgring, but Dubai did seem to cause some drops. In general the dynamic optimisation seemed decent; I had it set to Ultra and I didn't notice any degradation in terms of visuals, just in the frame rate on that one track, which is large and complex.

I can kind of see what the OP means about the opposition cars; they don't seem all that dynamic, there doesn't seem to be any weight transfer going on. But it didn't seem that much worse than any other racing game in this respect.

And as for gameplay, well... I dunno, it seemed fine. Not notably better than other similar games, but decent enough. I think Assetto Corsa might be slightly better in terms of handling, but that's just personal preference, and with only 3 cars on offer (well, 2 cars and a tedious truck... and on Mugello of all places, one of my all time favourite circuits...) it's kind of hard to tell.

Anyway, for me personally the most important things other than the fundamental gameplay are the cars and tracks on offer, and these are the things that will probably cause me to buy Forza over Project Cars 2 or GT Sport. I think PC2 arguably has a better track list (haven't looked at it in depth), but the ones in Forza are fine by me, and since I haven't really played a Forza game before I don't share the complaint that others have brought up about many of them being recycled. And as for the car list... that looks truly awesome.

Anyway, I can't comment on how the game runs for other people, but for me the demo at least is by noooooo means a 'crappy PC port'.

Played the demos. The load times didn't seem like anything unusual to me, and it ran great on the courses (2560x1440 maxed on a GTX 1070, avg of 70 FPS). The frame rates in the menus were oddly low, though. I also noticed some nasty graphical errors in the cockpit view of the truck.

Gameplay seems alright, though I recently got my wheel and have a big backlog of racing games to go through and don't plan on a full-priced racing game any time soon.

I played Horizon 3 on PC and it is beautiful as fuck. I wouldn't run it with any GPU below a 1000 series equivalent, but if you got the power the game runs like a hot knife through butter. Fantastic.

All the more reason why the 7 demo is a bummer.

Glad to hear you aren't getting problems. I have a pretty beastly computer, so I dunno why I was getting the load times I was getting. But that at least makes me hopeful that the full game will perform better.

I am still standing on the side of caution though, because I really want a decent career mode in this game. I want to have to earn my way to racing supercars, not just given them outright a few races in. While I love the Sim-racing concept, I still want it to feel like a game and having to earn my way to the supercars is enough of a game to craddle the actual sim racing. If they give me supercars up front I feel like there is no point, as stupid as that may sound.

Doesn't sound stupid at all; I know exactly what you mean, and I, too, really hope they have a decent career mode with a real sense of progression. It's probably not quite as important to me, as I'd still be likely to buy the game even if the career mode wasn't great, but... yeah, I'd be really disappointed for sure.

What racing games do you consider to have a good career mode? I really can't think of any that have done everything I wanted from a career. Honestly, flawed as it was I still like Gran Turismo's earn-money-to-buy-stuff thing.

In terms of sim racing games, I don't think I've seen a good career since Forza 4. Project cars had a weird mode where you start with go-karts, but randomly it sticks you in special events where you drive nice BMW's or Porche's and it didn't follow any sort of logical sense to me, but the drive was great. PC2 is reviewing okay but it seems to have some pretty jarring issues so I may wait for a sale to pick that up, depending on how Forza 7 reviews.

I actually really like the Need for Speed games. The Underground series, the original hot Pursuit, and Underworld were fantastic and did a good job of sticking you in a shitty car that you upgrade to a certain point before jumping into a better car, then you upgrade that car only to jump into even better cars later. I loved that shit. I wish they would make more of those games.

Hmm, okay, cheers. I've actually never played any of the games you mention, except for Project Cars, and for some reason I couldn't really get into that. Ah well, let us hope Forza 7 does something decent!
