I love how they say "Duke Nukem 3D depicts women as strippers and prostitutes."

Because there aren't any strippers or prositutes in real life? And how was this depicting ALL women? I'm just waiting for the day the media relizes this stuff affects close to one man living in his shed. The devs themsleves even said "If you find it offensive, don't let your kids buy it." Gearbox knows how to make this a non issue, why don't parents?
Because despite what I've said in my previous post, generally speaking, most people don't want to learn.

Think about the way the "older" generation treats new forms of music, new technology . . . anything that they have to relearn how to use. Hell I refuse to get a kindle, though less out of learning how to use it and more about wanting a genuine book in my hands.

Ok getting off topic. Anyway, people don't want to learn the ESRB system . . . because it would mean working. That's why the news outlets can get away with this shit. Think about a world where all parents had grown up with a system like the ESRB and everyone already knew how it worked and what it meant. The news outlets would NEVER be able to ruin games like Six days in Feluja (sp?) nor would they be able to claim games like Bulletstorm would make you a Rapist.

Now realize something important about it . . . it's the future. We don't have that much longer to find this beautiful world before us. Granted it might be longer than you think but still. The general view of parents is "I don't want to learn what this ESRB thing means, why do I have to know?" but at the same time they want to say there should be a system in place to keep their kids from playing them.

so once again, 90% of parents today, want their to be a system, but they don't want to learn a system since that is something that requires work on their part.

Part of me feels like attacking chauvinism on a station viewed largely by conservative good-ol-boys is going to backfire.

The reason it's a topic is the same reason it was a topic when they found out about the supreme court hearing the law against videogames.

BECAUSE IT IS A BACKWARDS VIEWPOINT. It is offensive to all gamers and really all intelligent people.

I'd be a lot more worried if a Duke Nukem game didn't offend Fox News and objectify women. I mean... that's the whole point of the series, right?
I'd be a lot more worried if Duke Nukem was a game that was actually coming out.

As soon as I read "reassuring slap" in the original article I knew Fox would sink their teeth into this. Honestly just ignore it.

You know, for a site opposed to gaming they sure are quick to give it publicity. Don't they realize it would be more effective not to draw publicity to it?
Oh please, Fox doesn't know how to think with a different view point.

Hell, our old friend Mr. Thompson is a prime example. I'd have never known about this 'school shooter' mod for Half-life 2 if the Escapist didn't post the article about JT flipping his rocker over it.
This reminds me of another article that was saying that until CNN did its report on Rapelay (which was 9 years old at the time of their report) almost no-one in the US had or had played the game. After their news report a million people downloaded the game.

Um...thanks, but I was more or less asking it rhetoricaly. I agree with you though, the problem is the nonstop battle between old traditions and new knowledge. Parent's cant be arsed to learn. However, the main depiction of all these issues (like Six Days, Bulletstorm, Duke etc.) is brought into the spotlight by the media. At some point, our generation will grow up, and our generation will be the journalists who report on all this stuff and hopefully be more understanding and educated on stuff like this, and any other form or entertainment. Obviously, by then there might something that our generation thinks is just crazy modern tech and we will oppose that, but I'd like to think that all of us getting pissed at FOX for coaxing people into believing Bulletstorm will turn your kid into a rapist, would have more understanding for similiar issues when we start influencing the world.

I'm just getting so fed up with all this stuff and I can't not care. The videogame industry is a passion of mine and while I have no problem with people who don't like games, or don't accept them as a form of valuable entertainment, I do have a problem with people who are determined to treat it differently and worse than any other form of entertainment (books, movies what have you).

I love the part where she says this is harmful to young woman. Because this idiot thinks that we are all sheep, and that all men will become Duke Nukem impersonators and all twin asain girl his willing whores.

Its like Inception with Irony. The first level of irony is the game itself, lampooning the idea of manliness. The next level is Fox blasting the game not because anyone of them really cares, but only because it gets their demographic in a froth. The last level is that people think that what we see in video games is what we become in real life, when pretty much everyone is able to separate the video game worlds we frequent from reality.
But...

What'll we find down there?

Oh for bloody sake. If regular television like Criminal Minds or Law & Order can get away with content of this degree. Why in the world are video games censored? It is called parent your children and do not purchase them M rated games.

It's so tiring how movies and TV can show strippers and prostitutes in all kinds of circumstances, but videogames can not...

And then comes all the yapping about how videogames are interactive and when you DO something your more likely to repeat it than if you watch something. I don't buy it.
I know. I hate that justification, because pushing a button and watching an onscreen avatar respond is nothing at all like the actual action being simulated unless you're simulating changing the channel on a TV. People tend to think of games as being somehow more 'corrupting' than any other media, and it's nothing but prejudice. That's all it is, and the Fox News people are the most prejudiced dicks of all.

"Brace yourself for the awfully sexist world of Duke Nukem Forever"

Yep, and that's the way it should be. Hail to the King.

Duke Nukem is a huge refreshment not just to the gaming industry but to everything. It's a big "Fuck You" to the world, this is what we want to do, this is what we are going to do.

No it wont help gaming's current situation with controversity, no it's not (to put it in a veryy Yahtzeeish way) your regular brown greyish cover based shooter. Who gives a fuck, it's going backwards which is what I think the gaming industry (and the rest of the world needs to do in certain ways) in order to progress. Stop with all the shite, just open up honest, true and kick ass.

Generally speaking I get more absorbed by movies and shows than games. The sheer interaction with the controller keeps me disconnected from the action.

Just watching someone murder makes it much easier to let go and become the character :p.

Eh who cares. Fox has no clue, not even on the most obvious satire and exaguration of sexism in history. They're so wildly irelevant now and this article is so silly and small time itll be forgotten in a week. They're just trying to stir up controversy and appeal to their shut in, old, christian, and of course white demographic. Not worth getting upset in the slightest about, its just pathetic.
