I gotta say, I think RTS games are the least imaginative.
FPS games can have compelling, imaginative stories, but you can't expect every one to be like that. It's just how it goes. Most are average, thus relatively unimaginative. Few are above average.
Just like in every genre, most will be pretty much the same, but a few will be different. Some bad different, some good different.
Also, your idea could actually make for a great game. If John is against the creation of the creatures, and Ivona is for them, that could lead to conflict in the story. You didn't give enough about Joseph, though. You just said he's a black ex-marine who raps. Also, since the creatures are all over the world, there would be a nice rebellion sort of thing going on with the humans. It would also involve large-scale battles in various settings.
