One day, one country got pissed at another country. Or maybe a bunch of X got pissed at Y.

I gotta say, I think RTS games are the least imaginative.

FPS games can have compelling, imaginative stories, but you can't expect every one to be like that. It's just how it goes. Most are average, thus relatively unimaginative. Few are above average.

Just like in every genre, most will be pretty much the same, but a few will be different. Some bad different, some good different.

Also, your idea could actually make for a great game. If John is against the creation of the creatures, and Ivona is for them, that could lead to conflict in the story. You didn't give enough about Joseph, though. You just said he's a black ex-marine who raps. Also, since the creatures are all over the world, there would be a nice rebellion sort of thing going on with the humans. It would also involve large-scale battles in various settings.

The gaming industry is the same as any other entertainment industry, and every industry suffers from lack of ideas. Television has it's 'Big Brother' and 'X Factor' problem, music... well I don't even want to start on that, it's a whole other topic.

The problem lies with the gaming industry's relatively fast advancement (compared to the other industries which have only improved as technology has alongside - TV since the 50's has seen huge changes, likewise with music)

Quantity has succeeded Quality.

Mine? How? Sure there's the idea of "things" taking over, but that's mostly it. And my idea wasn't about a small human resistance. It was a HUGE human resistance. It would be more like a full-on war than an almost hopeless rebellion. Er, it would be, since although the bio-thingies outnumber the humans, they lack the intelligence of humans and would be easy to kill. And it's not the overarching thing that would make the story. That would make the setting. The story might revolve around John and Ivona (because there's not enough information on Joseph) in conflict about what courses of action should be taken. John might want to see the whole corporation taken down, so more of the bio-thingies can't be manufactured, while Ivona would want to go in and try to fix what's happening. It could be linear, or it could be branching. Maybe there were different groups who reacted differently to your little group based on which branches you took along the way. It could be really cool.

EDIT: Oh yeah, if we're going to exchange ideas here too, I've got one. It's more humorous than serious, though. Basically, the console war has devolved to actual violence. The XBox fans are against the PS3 fans, while the Wii fans live in neutral zones. People have divided up, and violence across the borders has reached record highs. Now, almost a century after the release of both systems, both sides have manufactured weapons of their own. The Xbox side has the assault rifles and needlers and such from Halo, and the PS3 side has guns from the Resistance games. You can choose a side and take orders from your commander (who sucks at real strategy, so the path through the map (which is basically just a bunch of different small maps) is totally random) and go through the battles, fighting in warzones, or in neutral zones. Fighting in neutral zones will piss off the Wii owners, who will gradually lean from side to side based on which side kills the most of their people, and will idly attack whichever side they are against, but they will never actively hunt people down.

you forgot about the woman with big boobs wearing skin tight leather/spandex. NOW you have an fps.

Really though, I thought Turok [n64] and Prey were imaginative... in gameplay, not story. If you want a story play an RPG. Actually Mass Effect did a good job with the story

I was just thinking how cool it would be if someone made a survival horror FPS with a unique twist. You don't have any weapons and in order to pacify the alien creatures the space ship gets pumped full of hallucinogenic nerve gas. The entire game is just a big LSD trip, with zombies looking like any number of random things like rainbows, your Mom, or cartoon dogs. People say insane crap and the walls are shifting and bleeding the whole time.

The only weapon you get in the game is a talking fish, which after you stop hallucinating (you can find random power-ups that deactivate the drug temporarily) turns out to be a robotic cat.

You spend the whole game shifting out of psychotic hallucination and zombie world struggling to stay alive and get to the controls that will turn on the escape pod.

Heheh that might actually be fun. Though to be honest I am not sure how it would fit into the RTS genre, unless it could in fact be an FPS with grouping strategies and tactical commands. Endwars command system could actually be useful there, instead of the actual game...Now if we could pitch this to Microsoft...

There would be a variety of futuristic weapons to kill enemies and there would be a hundred different multiplayer options.

I made this synopsis to highlight how easy it is to come up with generic unimaginative fpses, it's strange how every gen there is a new fps hailed as the best thing since sliced bread when it's the same as it's predescessors but with extra features, I find this to be a lazy way to develop games when it's the same formula repeated.

FPS's are certainly the most unimaginative genre of gaming, anyone else feel this way?
well i think that is pretty interesting idea, but at the same time it also seems like been there done that sorta thing

What's the point of that as a game?

I could have a better time taking LSD then watching Aliens. Which I now want to do thanks to you.

It's basically Aliens except Ripley and the Aliens are both tripping their brains out. So the challenge is dealing with not knowing what is real and what isn't and hoping the alien doesn't wig out on you while you stagger around trying to get to the escape pod.

This would probably have to be Portal length for it to be fun.

I planned on it being a mindless shooter mostly. Except the maps wouldn't be linear, they would just be cities or forests or such.

(We should probably get back on topic...)

Dude this could be a way better game than the one at the beginning of this post. Improvised and customizable weapons made from office objects, ease of relatability to damn near anyone who's ever worked in a office cubical, and a universally hated set of adversaries. Seriously, this is a good idea, and could also be used it start some new form of comedy genre.

My FPS idea:

Your gun doesn't kill, it makes people stupid. So stupid, they kill themselves. You can upgrade your gun for more intricate and hilarious self-kills that take out other enemies around the kill you made stupid enough to not throw the grenade after he pulled out the pin.

The story would be off the wall and strange, the most notable fact being your heroes love life is doomed because the only woman he's ever loved is a lesbian.

Your sidekick is also a talking cat with a Boston accent. His name is Charlie.

No, you don't choose a side, you are automatically assigned to the side of the console you're playing on. Also, we need to work the PC gamers in somehow . . .

Also, in case you haven't gathered, I would totally buy that game.

Hmm... PC gamers... I know! They could be those people who are less common than the console gamers, but have really good aim and deal lots of damage. (Aimbots, hacks, mouse control, etc.) Also, they hate everyone. (PC gamer elitism has reached huge heights over the past century (in-game))


Also, I really like the idea of automatically assigning the player's team. It would also be a better investment for the companies we are using, because if the players want to play whichever side of the game, they have to but that company's version of the game.

(This really should get back on topic. I'm considering making a new thread for this idea...)
