France has passed a draft law that will throw illegal downloaders off the net. [http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8257720.stm]

In a 3 strikes you're out style system (shouldn't all laws be based on sports? My law would involve you having to win a penalty shoot out to avoid jail) starting with a warning email and ending with your internet being cut off if you continue to illegally download. I assume there would be some sort of internet "black list" along side.

The UK is looking at similar legislation which apparently would be even tougher. Surprisingly the film and music industry fully support these measures.

Do you think it will work in reducing piracy? Is this the right way to tackle illegal downloads? Are there any French pirates getting nervous?

No, it will do absolutely no good at all. What no government seems to have realised yet is that pirates can find a way around anything. All this will do, once again, is greatly piss off the general public and change absoultely nothing.

I doubt it will effect those with computer knowledge, one can scramble their IP or bittorent downloads rather easily using freeware. Unless they plan in going all Australian/Chinese on the general public and attempting to enforce serious censorship I can't see it being particularly effective.

no I don't suppose it will, since I can think of about a million loopholes in the term "illegal downloading"... and in any case, there are still millions of proxy servers...

and on another note, how are the french going to track "illegal" downloads, and seperate them from "legal" downloads?

That's why i live in America home of the freedom obesity and excess. Player hating France can suck it. But seriously if something like that passed I doubt it would stay in effect long.

I have a feeling that if someone is determined to illegally download then they can do it. Also there will be problems such as what about if there are multiple users on the computer and the wrong person is punished. Secondly i read on the BBC website musicians and song writers are against the law as many musicicans credit their rise to stardom to pirating music.

Nothing will change. Nothing the government does will ever change anything, except making people die, and the rich richer, and the poor poorer.

Oh sheesh...total nonesense again. It seems to be a common problem here in Europe that the people deciding about IT-problems, are always the ones who can't even get an SMS put together without being proud of it afterwards...

They start to discuss something like that here in Germany too, but it'll be as senselesss as the stop-sign-page before child-porn sites. Yeah that really tackles the problem right?

This may deter some pirates, but the guys who know what they're doing will find a way round it. They're always several steps ahead.

You weren't saying that when they were saving you from the Brits.
