I'm tempted to say Fable, because #3 sucked big nasty donkey balls, but #1 was awesome and so was #2, albiet for different reasons. The series has so much potential though, so I'd hate to see it go away. There actually aren't many games series' I'd wish to end. Metal Gear Solid, maybe.

Do none of you guys look forward to Final Fantasy Versus XIII?
I am. From what little ive seen, it looks like an actual game. hopefully it can be a bit of a redemption.
yeah i agree. i wont be hyped into it buy ill check out gameplay videos and reviews before i buy this one though.

ot: wow...alot of hate. personally if a series is making people happy, then go for it. it might not be my tastes but if it is making people happy then i dont see why it should die really.

but for arguments sake, i am getting sick and tired of shooters being anything related to COD (im not saying cod is the all mighty creator of its style, just saying thats the generalization i am using) and i am so sick and tired of its type of gameplay, i want my tactical, well planned and executed shooters please (a.k.a. socom 4 you might make me break my ps3 from so much nerdgasms coming out)

And Final Fantasy. Those games haven't been good since... ever, really. And what i don't get, it's called "FINAL Fantasy" so one would assume that the first game would also be the LAST game. Not the case.
It was going to be the Final Fantasy.

The first one single-handedly saved Square from bankruptcy.
Ah. And Square, being a company, saw the gold mine they had created and started digging. Bastards.
not trying to incite flames or anything, but if your game became a humongous hit, would you change the name of the title? the games title became instant recognition in its time, and slapping that name with a 2 on it guaranteed the average person would see it and go "oh yeah, i saw such and such, and it was pretty cool/i wanted to try that" and then they would go from there.

plus most of the gameplay/style stayed the same over the years, there are lots of differences for sure, for the more hardcore person to notice, but for the average person they were pretty similar game style wise.

its probably most of them...or none.
but i guess if they were forced to be creative and come up with something new, the high blood pressure would blow their mind.

Well, yeah! If they ever decide to release the damn game I'll get pretty excited about it.
From what I've seen/read, Versus will more than likely make or break the series for the next generation of consoles. Although I particularly enjoyed XIII, I am well aware that many do not. However, I don't think it's gotten to a point where the series needs to "die". I just think people need to stop expecting it to be perfect and enjoy the series for what it is.

Uncharted badly needs to die.
Just out of curiosity, why must Uncharted die so badly? I know that everyone is entitled to their opinion on the series, but I just find it hard to believe one could wish death on a series that a vast majority of people like...or at least enjoy a little bit.

and yet you say nothing about CoD??
I say nothing about CoD because I thought 4 (and only 4) was good and i honestly forgot.

I really hate uncharted because of in my opinion it has horrible story and characters/boring repetitive combat and the platforming I thought would have been good but ultimately no it wasn't.

The only thing I like in uncharted was the graphics but then thats not really a plus when you have so much bad gameplay/crap story and random-not-core-part-of-gameplay quick time events.

OT: How many times has a "franchise-killing" post been made? In the past month, at least, I've seen this topic brought up at least three different times! You could have at least added a twist or something to make it more interesting...
My count is around 6 times since I've first seen it back in September. (maybe be off)

Anyhoo, onto the business at hand.

-World of Warcraft: Because as a game, it actively wants to keep you from having fun except between grind sessions. The entire game is based on mental conditioning and social entrapment, offering no closure, and no escape from the need to get bigger numbers.

-Pokemon: The game remains unchanged from the original in perhaps the most direct manner possible, and there isn't really any story or other continuity worth following. It's literally just a commercial farce at this point, no matter how much interconnected Poke'swag they wave in front of our eyes. I mean, Hell. At least the other Nintendo Perennials try to change the gameplay elements up from time to time (well, not Mario Galaxy 2, I guess).

-First Person Shooters in general.
I've tried to be nice to these in the past, but it's been what, 4 years? I've played maybe ONE shooter that didn't come across as incredibly generic or highly overrated (the original L4D)?
And why? Because they had to be dumbed down. Why? Marketing accessibility.
When I am told repeatedly that my favorite shooters suck in comparison to the glory of Black Ops (y'know, a game that is so easy to exploit that it turned megabucks despite the core development team leaving the company?) there is something seriously wrong.
Not only is the market stagnating, it's contracting.

Now having actually played CoD4.3 and Halo 3.3, I've decided that if the shooter market exists solely to be exploited year after year, then fuck it. Scorched Earth for everyone involved. At least try to develop some niche' shooters guys. What the fuck is wrong with the world when the most "niche'/interesting" shooter coming out is being published by Square-fucking-Enix? And a sequel, no less?

Resident Evil
Final Fantasy - This one definitely needs to die. Too many already, and the MMO is complete shit.
Halo
Mario, Sonic (if only the shitty generic games that they made for it, Olympics bs and whatnot)
Zelda (the DS games, I want the console ones only.. and please no gay ass motion control shit, just give me a damn controller...and a bigger harddrive on the Wii.... IN FACT GET RID OF THE WII ALL TOGETHER, and come out with a normal console! With normal controllers! )

I agree about Call of Duty. The series has gone on more than long enough, the games are starting to get more generic with each incarnation, and no one else will dare release a decent game anywhere near a CoD release.
I'd say that Halo has to die, but I think there's still some life left in it. Halo Wars was a nice effort to try something different, and I want to see what happens if the franchise is taken over by a new developer.
The Tony Hawk series definitely needs to die, although I think Activision's doing a good job killing it off themselves.
The whole music game trend kind of needs to die off a bit. Guitar Hero was great, and then Rock Band was great, but now we have so many different games in so many different franchises with so many different peripherals, it's impossible to keep up.
Dynasty Warriors needs to die (are they still churning those out?). Nothing new has been done with that series pretty much since the first game. It's like an EA sports franchise but without the new characters every year.
The Final Fantasy series needs to go away until Square Enix can figure out a way to do something genuinely original. A few gameplay tweaks here and there just aren't enough to keep the old JRPG grind from feeling stale.
WoW needs to stop. Right now. It's being driven into the ground, it losing a lot of what made it popular, and yet it continues to have so much of a stranglehold on the MMO market that no other game even stands a chance. I have a terrible feeling that Old Republic is going to be a fantastic game, but will fail simply because the WoW addicts won't have the willpower to leave.

I'd be very happy if they didn't make another Halo, I loved Reach and thought it was a fitting way to end the series, anything else is just extraneous.
Guitar Hero should definitely stop, the games are getting more and more ridiculous with each iteration and they've completely lost what made the franchise fun in the first place: making the player feel like a Rock Star despite holding a silly plastic instrument, you know that thing Rock Band does but Guitar Hero seems to miss everytime since Harmonix split.
Metroid hasn't been the same since the SNES era, could we mercy-kill that?
Medal of Honour, Call of Duty, and any other "gritty" realistic shooter franchise (okay, spare Battlefield, I still love me some Battlefield), they've just gotten over the top to the point where it's silly. And developers are afraid to do anything but because these types of games sell. It's like the entire industry has developed a Micheal Bay complex. Call of Duty especially must die, there is absolutely no need for a Call of Duty game every year, especially when they phone them in as badly as they do now and there is NO NEED for people to pay $20 more for it than any other release. As gamers we should not stand for this kind of crap, I honestly believe that the recent Call of Duty obsessions is one of the worst things to happen to the industry in some time and it needs to die.
Come to think of it, can we kill Activision in general?
Oh, and RPG elements in every game need to die as well, I don't want to meddle with my stats in everything, sometimes I'd like to just play a game. Give me a new item or introduce a new gameplay mechanic instead of giving me a point to increase my stamina by 2.34% at some arbitrary interval. And I'm really beginning to miss the Counterstrike approach to online shooters where you're only as good as the match you're playing, no persistence, no grind, just skill.

All of them, franchises are what is wrong with the gaming industry at the moment(IMO), it would be OK if they made a game set in the same universe but came up with new game play and a new plot, but they aren't so they should be killed.

Except for maybe the Eldar Scrolls.

Not necissarily kill, but they need to stop making Sonic games for a few years. Maybe by then they'll have found someone who knows what the hell they're doing. Same with Pokemon, they need to start giving us pokemon that are actually NEW not just a copy of the previous installment.

Definitely Call of Duty - the first 4 games were really great (I enjoyed CoD 3 at least), and lets stop beating that horse...it's turning into a puddle already.

The Force Unleashed - they're terrible games.

Final Fantasy - I don't even know where to start with this one...just no...no more
