Steam has a free game section, and ive heard plenty of positive things about most of them. Oh, also, LotR online and Dungeons and Dragons Online are quite excellent in the MMO area.

Is saying TF2 too obvious?

Desktop Dungeons [http://www.desktopdungeons.net/?page_id=11] - it's a cross between a roguelike and a puzzle game where a single session takes about 10-15 minutes. Fun, challenging and highly replayable.

Portal was never Free.
It also takes longer, but you can progress in Spiral Knights without paying any real money.
Extra Credits also say that "World of Tanks" is a good free game. Never played it though.

Other than that, the rest of the good games I can offer are dirt cheap, not free.
Portal was free on steam at 1 point. I know casue thats when i got it myself. They were promoting Portal 2 at the time

Vindictus just got pre-released(open beta) in the EU. I can give that a hearty recommendation. There's also an american version of the game; make sure to get the right one.

Nethack. I don't play it very often, but when I do, I'm Indiana Jones trying to slay Death with a whip.
Iji is also very good.

EDIT: My 2^8 post, and it only took me 15 months to get here.

Portal was free for a short time on Steam. Anyone could "purchase" it and receive a permanent copy. I know this cause that's how I got it.

Hidden: Source, though I wont vouch for that game still being alive.
Insurgency.
Dwarf Fortress.
Kerbal Space Program.

They must have gotten rid of the downloads. :/

Sorry, it's been a while since I've used those links.

I haven't seen Spelunky mentioned, it's an adventure platformer that has to be the hardest game of all time. It's even got an XBLA port coming, but the PC version is still free. It's really addicting. Give it a shot:

Noting free-to-play MMO's is becoming redundant these days as subscription model games are becoming rare.

Incidentally, City of Heroes recently went free-to-play under the banner "City of Heroes: Freedom." Of the two super hero MMO's I've tried, I prefer City of Heroes. I didn't particularly like Champions Online and I didn't even try DC Heroes. Not yet, anyway. I haven't tried the Freedom version yet. I expect some of the gameplay to be updated and made all the worse for it. Not to mention the limitations placed on free players and such. But we'll see.

Portal is free if you have an Nvidia graphics card.
