Basically this. I was recently pointed in the direction of that game by a fellow poster here on the Escapist and been having a lot of fun with it since then. Also, in turn it turned me on to the idea of rogue-like games and more specifically in my case, Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup. Very punishing and unforgiving but I like it a lot. There really is a great sense of accomplisment, whenever you kill a particularly hard enemy or get further than you've done before.

Other than that, flash games and the like on sites like Miniclip are always fun, if you're just looking for some mindless fun.

Yeah, quite a few. Although you do notice the quality of free games is generally lower than that of commercial retail games.

Need For Speed World, Combat Arms, Battleforge, Battlefield Play4Free, Battlefield Heroes, TAGAP (and soon TAGAP 2), and a few of the more professionally made flash games such as Ngame and Fancy Pants Adventures (though the latter is really only good for one or two playthroughs).
Spelunky isn't too bad, either.

EDIT: Oh, and how could I forget all the old-school freeware MS-DOS games that you can play in DOSBOX.

Flash Games: Kongregate (google it) has basically the best of all the major developers in the flash world on one site.

Microtransactions: League Of Legends. Google it. User-friendly DotA basically. Only things you can actually pay for are custom skins and boosts for out-of-game currency (influence points)

I'd also give an honorable mention to Age of Empires Online. It's still in the closed beta and I still haven't gotten in, but from what I've seen from my friends playing it its still true to the legacy that Ensemble Studios built years ago.

Except it's not. Every time I play that game I end up playing it for an hour. It's so addictive.

I've been playing League of Legends, it's a free version of DotA. Give it a try.

Just started playing Pokémon TCG Online (www.pokemontcg.com), being a Magic player bored at home with nobody to play with, it gives a small-yet-good TCG-playing fix.

Iji [http://www.remar.se/daniel/iji.php]; probably the best freeware game I've ever played.
