I'm sure there have been many a thread about this before but the status of MMOs fluctuate so much that any info I find could be very out of date.

I've found myself looking for things to occupy myself with recently and I'm thinking that I'm wanting to get into playing an MMO again. The main problem is that I have zero cash to spend on anything save for the bare essentials (electric, heat and internet). So if you guys have any suggestions for a good free-to-play MMO than my ears are wide open.

Just as some background, I played WoW and quite liked it for a while. I would have liked it a LOT more if I wasn't paying £10 a month for it. I also played GuildWars religiously for three years but, due to IRL circumstances, I became not able to play it so much and lost interest.

Could always try out the free "unlimited" trials a lot of the popular MMOs are doing now.

Runecape is pretty fun... right?
I never really got into Runescape. Too many small children and a chat filter just grinds my gears.

I'm trying to remember the name of this really good one..

Fuck it, it's completely slipped my mind.

Here, have a look on this site and you'll probably find something.
Cheers, I'll check that out.

Unlimited free trials? How do you mean? The only free trials I'm used to are the ten day ones you can get.

Many let you play for as long as you want until you go past a certain level. Just look on their websites and they should have them advertised normally in big writing and flashy lights.

Il have a quick look now and see what i can find.

EDIT: Champions Online: http://www.champions-online.com/demo

Warhammer Online: http://www.warhammeronline.com/trial/index.php?WHFB9F-PNAIU-3XRWI-E6BRD-TRPTI

Dungeons & Dragons Online (tis all free): http://www.ddo.com/playnow/

Just have a look around and see, im sure you'll find something you like :)

Cheers for your help on all this guys. That website Furburt linked me to is actually pretty helpful.

Ah yes, I remember hearing about those "Play to level x" style trials. The problem is that after that point, I have to start paying monthly to keep having fun.

MU Online is a pretty good free MMORPG, it reminds me a lot of Aion, only Aion is better.

Hardly a MMO. Unless you consider Diablo 2 a MMO too.

The only good F2P MMO I know is Dungeons and Dragons Online. It was okay when it was P2P, but when it became F2P the standards were lowered by a LOT, making it automatically a lot better.

The rest is crap.

The only trial which sucks more than Aion's trial is CO's trial. Aion's lasts till level 7 or 5 hours or 10 days (or 14 days, not important...) are over. That's not much. But while CO offers up to... 15 levels? you can't leave the tutorial zone, which is intended for levels 1-6 tops. You can't choose more than 2 powers either. You either stay there for 10 levels killing monsters (which is stupid, boring and pointless, getting 2-5xp per mob) or you... make a new char. Or buy the game.

It takes about 45 minutes the first time you play to finish the tutorial, 25-30 after that or you can skip it on retail accounts.

I'd still say MU is an MMO. It's online only, and you play in the same world as everyone else.

Perfect World [http://pwi.perfectworld.com/] seemed pretty decent, if fairly generic. The game itself is free to play, although you can pay for in game bonuses.

Lunia is pretty good and so is GunZ if you are into their sort of things but a warning for GunZ if you don't learn to do some fancy moves fast you will be destroyed

Knife stab then empty clip into victims face seemed to be the tactic of choice for many players on that game. Even then it was still fun till they added the special weapons and gear that you could buy with real money to give you a pretty unfair advantage.

You could try Parabellum. Tis pretty fun, and you don't really have to pay anything till you run out of G1 points, which I haven't yet and I've been playing for a good month. It is an FPS though.

Maplestory? 200 levels for free, and now with a hell of a lot less grind! Plus, they're really picking up the pace on massive updates, like new classes.

Runescape. I used to love that game, still have a soft spot for it. Admittedly playing World of Warcraft has really changed my ideas on MMOs, and from what I hear Runescape has really changed to try and rid itself of real world trading, but only succeeded in destroying itself.
