Still dont see how minecraft can be close to survival horror, I played with no-sound, sure it kept making me look backwards to see if there was a spider or creeper chasing me but hardly scary or intense

I kind of like the idea, although the only scenario I can envisage can be summarised as "Fallout: New Zombies".

Which has been done by about 40 mods I imagine.

Free roaming games tend to be about the unstoppable god character (Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Just Cause etc etc etc) ploughing from one end of the world map to the other and back again.

I don't see how adding survival horror can improve that because it would have to negate the "unstoppable god" part to make any form of sense.

Part of the fun of free roaming games involves exploration and if the goal of the game is to survive amongst horrific monstrosities, where is the will to explore coming from?

Again, it would be great if someone could answer these questions and solve the "conundrum" of open world survival horror (it's definitely a game I'd check out), but I'm pessimistic at best.

There is a game I'm excited for, coming to the XBLA (due to a deal with Microsoft, it will be Xbox only) that is a free roam survival based persistent world MMO. They are releasing in two stages, the first being Borderlands-esque multiplayer on player hosted servers which will mainly just be a technical test for them and then they are planning to release the main one afterwards. Both are still very far off though.

It's not even at the point that they have shown in-game stuff yet but they have discussed a lot of their design decisions about the game on their blog [www.undeadlabs.com]

Randomly generated areas. I don't recall the exact name of the game, but I remember a racing game where the land wasn't already all laid out, but generated through algorithms as you reach them. This would allow the word to be much bigger and maybe even randomized as you explore. This also applies to generating the insides of buildings and loot.
---The world would be broken up into general areas but these area specifics would be randomized and changed.

Actually surviving. I'm already imagining a I Am Legend situation. Collecting items into a safe area and such.

Some ideas if applying multiplayer...

Everything but the safe-house you slept in is subject to change, the world is just that chaotic. Like I said, the areas around you are not generated until you get to those areas. So every time you start up the game, you may be put in a world where others may be playing as well, but this info will not be made apparent to you. Provided that you were in the same kind of area, your worlds might be placed together like a jigsaw puzzle. This allows you to accidentally stumble onto other players as you explore the world.

That does actually sound pretty good. It'd take a really good developer to pull it off and will only appeal to certain types of people, but done well could make for a really chilling and involving gaming experience.

You mean infinity mode in Dead Rising? (that one is actually scary and makes you feel like you are trying to survive, since story mode, its not so hard)

I think it would be pretty cool. Even better if it changes up every new game.

Alone in the dark 5 had a go but that was just tacked on.
something like I Am Legend would be cool if done right.
What about Dead Rising?
I am legend would be a good movie to take lessons from. It could be some fun open world co-op although it'd hardly be scary that way.
